Madden NFL 2001

Madden 2001 is currently the only game in town if you want the NFL on your PC. Fortunately for us, they’ve done a great job of putting together a fun and fairly realistic title. While there is the occasional questionable call by the AI, and the play-by-play is downright annoying, the game rocks on so many levels that you’ll be able to forgive it these failings. If you aren’t sure, be aware that the controls provide for a rather steep learning curve, but that the unprecedented level of on-field control you’ll gain once they’re mastered makes it more than worth the price of admission. I’d suggest using a Gravis Pro Gamepad, one of the Microsoft Sidewinder line of gamepads, or a pad with at least eight buttons, in order to get the full experience. As long as you have the requisite number of buttons, you’ll be juking and spinning down the sidelines in no time. If you are a fan of football, or a fan of good sports titles on the PC, I’d highly recommend picking up this title.

In fernsehreifer Manier steht bei Madden NFL 2001 der Franchise-Modus im Vordergrund, bei dem Sie ein Team über Jahre hinweg betreuen. Als besonderes Feature dürfen Sie kritische Schlussphasen berühmter Begegnungen nachspielen. Neben den US-Stars sind auch die europäischen NFL-Teams, zumindest in Freundschaftsspielen, mit von der Partie.

Madden NFL 2001 is the best football game for the PC. Its graphics are stellar, the gameplay is capable, and the overall experience is satisfying. If you are a football fan, this title should not be missed.

Kein anderes Programm vermittelt die Atmosphäre einer Football-Übertragung im US-TV so gut - da fehlen nur noch die obligatorischen Werbespots für Bier oder Pickup-Trucks. Madden 2001 wurde poliert und überarbeitet, spielt sich aber nicht großartig anders als die 2000er-Ausgabe. Ein solider Spaß ohne große Überraschungen, der nur mit dickem Rechner und Regenkenntnissen genießbar ist.

Nach der Flurbereinigung der letzten Jahre ist Madden (zumindest hierzulande) die einzige American-Football-Serie. Das ist auch nicht weiter schlimm, denn Madden sieht gut aus und bietet einiges an Spieltiefe. Einsteiger werden klar überfordert, Profis toben sich an der umfangreichen Spielzugsammlung aus. Schade nur, dass der Sound immer noch so mickrig ist. Das wird ambitionierte Fans aber nicht abhalten, vor allem weil endlich europäische Teams ihren Weg ins Spiel gefunden haben. Allein dafür lohnt sich allerdings schon der Neukauf.

De mannen van Electronic Arts hadden ongetwijfeld de bedoeling om van Madden NFL 2001 een verbeterde versie te maken van Madden 2000, maar als we eerlijk zijn, is dit niet echt gelukt.

Malgré des tonnes d'options, Madden NFL 2001 possède de nombreuses lacunes. D'une réalisation très moyenne par rapport à la production actuelle sur PC, il souffre de plus de gros problèmes de jouabilité, d'une vitesse de jeu un peu trop élevée et d'un système de passes un peu décourageant. Une version qui paraît un peu baclée au profit de la PlayStation 2, en fait, et c'est bien dommage.
