Generally speaking this is a thinking man's game, though that's not to say everyone can't enjoy this style of gameplay. If you want flat-out action you'd be silly to pass up Soldier of Fortune, but those who want a clever mix of gaming styles and that MDK style eccentricity, Messiah is for you. A unique game that will provide weeks of fun, Messiah is a pleasant departure from the usual genres - it's half adventure, half action and a quarter bizarro.

If you're tired of me-too games that engage your left mouse button more than your brain, you should run out quickly and possess Messiah. It's a great game with an all-new gameplay style, and should be a part of every jaded action gamer's library.

Shiny has truly created a masterpiece here. The graphics are stunning, the sound is amazing and the gameplay is phenomenal. I'm starting to sound like some hokey movie critic. Next I'll be saying the game is electrifying or something. But seriously, this game is truly unique. In Shiny's attempt to create something different they succeeded. Even the storyline was good. Voices were great, with Bob sounding quite hilarious, and the German Satan being evil as all hell. Messiah has the occasional moments of common third person mediocrity, but those are far and between. Most scenarios require a decent amount of thought and the use of under-handed tactics.

Taken as a whole though, it does work, and if you can suspend your disbelief, Messiah is an intriguing game. There's constantly something going on, and much of the value is in seeing what's around the next corner. It's a fine piece of work, although whether it gives Shiny the hit they are so desperate for remains to be seen. Its mass market appeal is debatable, and it's certainly no Earthworm Jim, but in aiming high, Shiny have furnished us with a hardcore gaming experience that will test your manual dexterity and gaming acumen to their limits. Messiah is certainly an epic game, but after two and a half years, you'd really expect it to be.

As I said at the beginning, this was a damn hard game to review. I could barely get it to run before the patch and it’s still really unstable on my system, but… When it does run it is amazing. I have to give Messiah high marks for graphics, concept, gameplay and sound, with the caveat that the game is not that stable. It may work for you or it may not even boot. Wait for the inevitable patches and watch the message boards before picking this one up.

Game industry News (GiN)
I have to admit, I am not going to stop playing Half-life for messiah, but that's mainly because Messiah does not have a multiplayer option. Beyond that, I rate it as an impressive step into the next generation of FSPs. The graphics are well thought out, and the characters appear to actually move around whether you are near them or not. The only serious negatives are the lack of a multiplayer aspect and the religious undertones of the game, if that sort of thing bothers you.

If you were expecting the second coming, you're going to be disappointed - but Messiah is still a fun ride.

ActionTrip
Messiah, unfortunately, has several inconvenient bugs that should never appear in a final release of a game, especially not after all those years of development. The levels seam somehow incomplete with overlapping textures, and the game occasionally simply locks the computer down, leaving you no other choice than to go for the reset switch... Let us hope the patches will solve these problems. The general impression is also affected by the difficulty of the game caused by incoherently stated missions and weird problems with even stranger solutions. This can make playing quite frustrating, so I will recommend Messiah only to the somewhat older and more experienced players in search of a properly challenging game.

But the sad truth for little Bob and the folks over at Shiny is that time marched on for far too long, and the game's graphics have begun to show their age. That is, if you can even see them on your system. If Interplay finishes the bug-wrangling process we'll have no problem recommending Messiah, but until that time, we sadly have to call it a false prophet.

Even though it was in development for more than three years, Messiah still feels rushed. It's got one good idea, but it's a really good idea - and one original concept is still one more than most games offer. During the occasional moments when Messiah gets everything right, it transcends its many shortcomings. But it's bogged down by its litany of problems more often than not, while it frequently squanders its best play mechanic.

In my opinion (which is pretty negative as you may have allready noticed), Tomb Raider 4 is as fun to play as getting in a fight with Mike Tyson, but at least the story is somehow realistic. The only thing realistic in Messiah is the body damage. When you fall from a stairs, be sure you break your legs and can do nothing else than crawl around, looking pittyful (and that's not what you want in a game).
Nah, Messiah is a piece of crap that tries to be some kind of Tomb Raider-like game with a "neat" story (yea, let's make the player a kiler-baby-angel that saves the world) behind it. And to believe I wasted (not too much) time on this game.

Looking at the cover of Messiah, I couldn't help but think, "I've got to be a baby? What kind of action-packed game is this?" But after reading the literature a bit further, it is revealed that the baby is an angel, and that angel is you, and you have the power of possession. Not only that, but it promises a world of greed, lust and the biggest lack of moral turpitude that one could imagine. The story states that in the future, everyone will be able to buy beauty and brains as easily as buying a diamond ring. They are available to just about everyone, but only the wealthy can truly afford to have them.
