Which, all told, makes Acceleration a no-brainer for Flight Simulator X owners. And with the slipstreamed service release boosting performance dramatically (and the original down to $30), it's also a perfect reason for Flight Simulator X standbys to climb on board.

Worth Playing
Flight Simulator X: Acceleration adds a respectable amount of content to the original Flight Simulator X, especially for the $30 price tag. Although you only receive three new aircrafts, they offer significantly different flight experiences and challenges that are exemplified by the new, well-designed and interesting single-player missions. The new multiplayer racing capability alone could justify the purchase of this expansion pack. Anyone who owns Flight Simulator X would be hard-pressed to not add this exceptional expansion to his or her library.

On average, the thirty five new singleplayer missions have a play time of thirty minutes apiece, which when combined with the multiplayer missions, and the free flight mode, makes for an expansion pack of tremendous value.

There are a lot of third-party add-ons for Flight Sim X, and you can make an argument that, for example, the detailing is higher in one of these add-on F/A-18s. But the added capabilities that Acceleration brings to the sim, such as the hoist and retrieval capability with the new helicopter, the carrier operations, and the new multiplayer racing missions, make this a very attractive and recommended expansion for any Flight Simulator X fan.

Though Flight Simulator X: Acceleration is unlikely to draw in newcomers, the expanded single-player content and competitive multiplayer component will surely satisfy existing fans. The fundamental simulation aspects haven’t changed, but the action layered on top does much to eschew the series' reputation as a competent but sleepy simulation.

At $30, this is a very nice expansion for Flight Sim X, bringing not just some new aircraft but solid multiplayer elements to the fore. Fans of the Flight Sim franchise should enjoy this.

30 euros is a lot for a title like this one. The absolute FSX fan no doubt has to get it, even if only to have the box in his closet. The game brings enough new missions with here and there some innovation like the grappler of the Merlin and the aircraft carrier landing with the Hornet. The planes are great, the give a tougher image to FSX. They offer the same quality as payware planes for which you get to pay 50 euros for only one of them. Also the racing modes are cool but I remain with doubt as those that look around enough can find similar fun with freeware. Why couldn't this title be released out of love for the community, free and for nothing? Capitalism...

Assuming your hard drive isn't already packed with community add ons, Acceleration is an absolute must buy for fans of Flight Simulator X. If you haven't picked up anything like this from FSInsider, Acceleration offers easy access to two of aviations most inspired fighter designs and a very versatile helicopter, and dozens of new missions that are every bit as exciting and enjoyable as those in the original game. When you add in the multiplayer air race component, it's hard to see how anyone who isn't already a fan of the series could pass up the new expansion.

Like much of Acceleration's varied content, it's an exciting business, but not one for fainthearts or fumblers.

Technical niggles? Uncharacteristically for ACES, there do appear to be a few. Those with masses of add-ons may experience small issues with 3rd-party content after install. More worryingly, there's been a smattering of lock-up and crash reports on FSX forums since release (most of the afflicted seem to own NVIDIA 7xxx series cards). Should you be wary? Should you stick to freeware and SP1 for the moment? Should I stop asking so many rhetorical questions in my reviews? Who knows? The bottom line is you won't find a better value, more generous or more diverse FSX add-on than this one.

My bottom line is that the FSX Acceleration expansion pack is worth getting for the improvements to the infrastructure (carrier operations, Reno air racing), but that better add-on airplanes are available elsewhere. Which, now that I think about it, is pretty much how I felt about Flight Simulator X too.
