MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch is a mess from top to bottom. The jokes are rarely ever funny, the gameplay is a veritable smorgasbord of repetitive and boring action, and the underwhelming graphics and sound don't help matters. If you're a fan of the TV program, you may find Celebrity Deathmatch amusing for the 20 minutes it takes to see every single gag in the game once, and even that might be a bit of a stretch. As for anyone else, stay as far away from Celebrity Deathmatch as is humanly possible.

The premise is a simple one: “Hey, let’s take a bunch of famous people, make clay models out of them and then have them beat the crap out of each other mercilessly!” Such is the basic concept behind Celebrity Deathmatch, a show that gained a pretty impressive following on MTV. Now, Gotham Games has finally put together a game based on the TV show. Unfortunately the gameplay is extremely bad, being too repetitive, too shallow and too short. Celebrity Deathmatch is an empty fighter that won’t grab your attention, let alone hold it for very long.

This button masher is not so much a game as an opportunity to become deeply familiar with your computer's J key. Although a variety of attacks are available to your character, it makes little difference which on you choose. For $20, you could probably hire Miss Cleo and Shannen Doherty to wage a battle to the death in your own backyard. Why bother with an imitation?

Worst of all, this is a fighting game in which the fighting is neither exciting nor funny. The controls are a wreck, whether you’re playing using a keyboard or a gamepad — and even when you master the combos, they do nothing more than trigger the special attacks. If you’re imagining the total freedom that the show’s combatants enjoy, forget it: here, you’re on a dual-axis rail, flailing like a Rock ’Em Sock ’Em robot. As a huge fan of both fighting games and the MTV show, let me be the first to tell you that this game fails utterly at capturing the spirit of either.

This is a lifeless corpse of a game. I'm giving it five per cent more than I should because Mr T is in it (and in any sane world all games would have Mr T in them). But be warned: even limited exposure to this atrocity will numb your soul for evermore.
