NASCAR Revolution

EA has done a very good job with NASCAR Revolution. There are a couple of graphical slip-ups (noticeable because the other graphics are so good), and the menu structure and design is questionable. But the driving experience is engaging and has very different demands from the types of racing more popular in Europe.

NASCAR Revolution gaat het ondanks mooie graphics en een soepele besturing hier dan ook lastig krijgen. Vrijwel alle circuits zijn sterk op elkaar lijkende ovals. Heb je er een gereden, dan heb je ze feitelijk allemaal gereden. Verder duurt het nogal lang voordat een nieuwe race is geladen en bewegen de auto's af en toe nogal blokkerig over het circuit. Met het realisme van de game zit het wel goed, maar het betreft hier dan ook een Electronic Arts produkt.

Viele kleine Eigenheiten betonen den eigenständigen Charakter von NASCAR Revolution und grenzen es klar von den Papyrus-Spielen ab. Zu nennen sind unter anderem die allmählich eintretende Dämmerung, die schicke 3D-Grafik und die rundum aufwendige Präsentation. Wenn ich dem Programm aber ganz tief in die Pupille blicke, gerät es ein wenig ins Schlottern. "Ich weiß", scheint es zu flehen, "fast immer nur im Kreis fahren ist nicht so superspannend. Was soll ich machen? Das Vorbild ließ mir keine Wahl. Und die mäßige Sichtweite steht mir auch nicht ausgezeichnet. Aber meine kräftigen Wagen und der Destruktiv-Aspekt sind doch fein gelungen, oder?" Schon recht. Wer NASCAR-Liebhaber ist, kann zur Wertung gern noch fünf Punkte hinzufügen.

This is by far one of the best Nascar games I have ever seen on any platform, the graphics surpass the others by leaps and bounds. The realism is almost unreal, your car actually acts like how a real car would act in given situations, whether you are just a racing game fan, or a Nascar enthusiast this game is a can't miss, next time your in the stores, make sure to grab a copy.

Het spel bevat zoveel extra's, instellingsmogelijkheden en opties dat het uiteindelijk over zijn eigen voeten struikelt. NASCAR Revolution is zeker geen revolutie op spelgebied. Daarvoor bevat het teveel essentiële fouten op het vlak van gameplay. NASCAR freaks zijn welkom, maar echte racers laten dit spel beter links liggen.

Overall, NASCAR Revolution is a fairly weak title. It may actually appeal, probably because of the music, to the sort of person who was pissed off to see Jeff Gordon win the Daytona 500 this year rather than Dale Earnhardt. For the rest of us though, NASCAR Revolution is a mediocre, frustrating, and only occasionally fun attempt at wresting the NASCAR trophy from Papyrus. Yeah, the hicks may occasionally rise up in revolt, but don't worry, they're to preoccupied tossing beers at Dan Akroyd and the ghost of John Belushi over at Bob's Country Bunker to be any kind of a threat.

Skandal! Betrug! Trotz mehrmaligen Abklopfens der Packung konnte ich kein Fitzelchen Revolution entdecken. Auf der CD-ROM steckt nur eine durchschnittliche Rennsimulation, bei der die Autos dahinschnurren, als würden sie auf Luftkissen schweben. Technisch ist eher Degeneration angesagt: Die Streckengrafik löst Trübsinn aus, die hübschen Autos lassen bei Massenaufläufen selbst flotteste Pentium-II-Systeme einen Gang zurückschalten. Es klemmt so einiges: »Arcade« wirkt kaum anders als »Simulation«, und die Bremsen der simulierten Boliden unterbieten selbst meinen alten Twingo. Die PC-Autos bauen selten Unfälle,während meins ständig Dreher macht und dann tagelang dem Hauptfeld nachtrödelt. Nur Positionswechsel und Pulkreibereien sorgen kurz für Spaß.

You've really got to hand it to Stormfront for the graphics work they did on the cars - but you've got to lambaste them for not figuring out that pretty pictures aren't worth squat if you can't make 'em move on the screen. As we say down here where NASCAR racing got started, this dog don't hunt - and if you buy it after reading this then I've got some infield tickets for next year's Daytona 500 you might be interested in.
