Need for Speed II: Special Edition

If you're a racing fan, or just love exotic cars, this is an excellent game and is well worth your time and money. It runs well, looks great, and is a ton of fun to play. It's totally customizable, so anyone can tweak it to play just as they like. A lot of care was taken to produce this game, and it shows. Bottom Line: Great simulation, fantastic cars, lovely tracks, and just plain fun. Totally customizable so anyone can enjoy.

I really enjoyed The Need for Speed II. I didn't think it was as revolutionary as Need for Speed was in its time, but it was a great sequel that lacked only what EA has now added to NFSII: SE. Now they've re-released the game with 3Dfx Glide accelerated visuals and a few sleek sports cars most of us will never been seen with in real life. The guy whose got NFSII without a 3Dfx board and Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro joystick won't get much out of this. Having said that, I can't think of a reason not to buy it if you do have those things. Need for Speed II: SE is the best arcade racing game around, bar none. Exotic sports car lovers will love this title because there's a ton of great multimedia material on every one of the cars, including the four new ones. If you're feeling that need for serious PC racing action, look no further than NFS2: SE.

I am the first to admit that I have a strange taste in racing games, as up until testing the Need for Speed series my favorites in this category have been Ubi Soft's POD (due to its incredibly gorgeous surrealistic tracks) and -- to a lesser extent -- Interplay's Whiplash 3D (due to the creatively swirling track design). Having thoroughly tested Need for Speed II SE, I can say confidently that it is right up there with the very best not just in terms of graphics and sound but, most importantly, in terms of pure enjoyment (I only wish that Electronic Arts would follow Ubi Soft's great policy on releasing many extra cars and tracks on its website to provide continuously changing variants to the races). I give this polished game my unqualified recommendation for purchase.

Need for Speed 2 SE to gra praktycznie dla wszystkich oferująca ?wietną zabawę zarówno wytrawnym znawcom samochodowych symulacji, jak i fanom gier zręczno?ciowych. Bardzo ciekawe są także konfrontacje typu człowiek przeciw człowiekowi i to zarówno na jednym komputerze (split screen) jak i w sieci. Gdybym miał użyć jednego słowa na okre?lenie NFS2 SE powiedziałbym że jest po prostu SZYBKA. To, w połączeniem ze sporą widowiskowo?cią sprawia że każdy miło?nik jazdy samochodem prędko nie usunie kompaktu z napisem Need for Speed 2 Special Edition" ze swojego czytnika.

Ex-Kollege Michael Schnelle meinte, Need for Speed 2 sei kein reinrassiges Action-Rennspiel. Dem kann ich nun ganz und gar nicht zustimmen. Nicht nur fehlt es an Setup-Optionen, vor allem aber das Prinzip "Lieber mit Vollgas in die Bande als rechtzeitiges Abbremsen" trifft eindeutig auf dieses Produkt zu. Die Special Edition kann mich - wie häufig bei solchen "Updates" - nicht überzeugen.

Mitten im Sprung darf munter drauflos gelenkt werden, viel zu enge Kurven werden problemlos mit Tempo 250 passiert, und die Gegner rammen locker vor sich hin, was da so im Weg steht, und kleben selbst nach Unfällen Sekunden später bereits wieder an Ihrer Stoßstange. Für stolze DM 35,- erhalten Updatewillige nicht gerade viel, unerschrockene Neukunden sollten im Softwareladen aber auf das Kürzel SE Wert legen.

Sorry, EA, aber damit habt Ihr es übertrieben: Einen 3Dfx-Patch gibt es normalerweise kostenlos, zusätzliche Strecken habt Ihr bei Moto Racer auch unentgeltlich veröffentlicht, und die drei neuen Autos unterscheiden sich ohnehin nicht von den anderen. Dafür von den Besitzern der normalen Version eine stattliche Update-Gebühr von 35,- DM zu verlangen, ist frech. Zu diesem Preis gibt es bessere Budget-Titel.

In vergelijking met de originele versie van Need for Speed II, bevat deze 'Special Edition' slechts 1 (één) bijkomend traject en 4 nieuwe wagens. Al de trajecten uit de originele versie werden gewoon overgenomen. O ja, er is ook een 3Dfx versie bijgekomen. Maar potverdorie. Zo'n upgrade zou normaal gezien gratis moeten zijn. Electronic Arts zag echter de kassa al rinkelen en ze maakten er een 'special edition' van. Al wie dus de originele Need For Speed II heeft gekocht, wordt hiermee flagrant in de kou gelaten.
