Quandary
All in all this is an exceptionally good addition to the Neverwinter Nights saga. As well as detailed graphics, a lot of exploration, and an abundance of treasures and magic items to find, it offers plenty of combat with some really tough fights. Of course you can turn down the difficulty level if you meet a seriously deadly opponent and, although the combat is in real time, you can halt the action as often as you like to re-think your tactics.

Worth Playing
This is a quality expansion pack. It is a better adventure, in my opinion than the original game and definitely a level up from Shadows of Undrentide. The story is good and keeps you engaged. The textures and tilesets are well done and give enough variety in your dungeons that they don't get too stale. The difficulty of puzzles seems to balance the line of not being too hard so as to deflate the experience, but provide adequate distraction from hack and slash. The monsters provide a good challenge and you will find yourself running and resting just to get through some of them. The additional prestige classes with new abilities and spells are all enough to serve up a highly recommended game. The only drawback I see is some difficulties with the henchman. Knowing Biowares commitment that will be resolved a patch soon. Highly recommended.

Any expansion of a game with a large mod community begs the question “Is this expansion worth the money when I can get so much for free?” In the case of Hordes of the Underdark, the answer is certainly “yes.” The adventure is decently long (15-20 hours) and has a unique feel and tone when set beside the earlier official offerings and the mod community stuff.

Seeing that kind of humor, I felt like the designers had more fun making Hordes of the Underdark than they did making Shadows of Undrentide, which made Hordes much more fun to play as a result. If you have Neverwinter Nights, owning Hordes is a must as it will greatly enhance the replay value of the original title as well. Where will the franchise go from here? The end of Hordes still leaves things open for further expansions, so Torm only knows where the adventure will really end. If the designers continue to put this much effort into expanding an already great game, though, I’m not sure I want it to.

On an overall note, Hordes of the Underdark offers a considerably more rewarding experience than the Shadows of Underntide and, therefore, deserves an honorable place in your RPG collection. It presents enough improvements to the NWN franchise to satisfy its ever-growing community of devoted players. After you're done, you'll most probably get the incentive to try it again with another new prestige class.

Bioware really managed to stuff a lot of extras into this expansion pack, and it plays and flows much better than Shadows of Undrentide. The story is great, the epic battles are truly epic and the graphics have been given a slight tweak. There are a few minor blemishes, but for the most part Hordes of the Underdark is a shiny gem. Even with all the free user-created content out there for Neverwinter Nights, Hordes of the Underdark is well worth plunking down $30 for if you like what you played in the original.

So how come Hordes of the Underdark, a superior game to the original NWN in almost every respect, gets a lower score? Part of it is the unstoppable march of progress – Knights of the Old Republic has made HOTU somewhat obsolescent. Another reason is that the original was just that – original. Nothing like it before, but Hordes is an expansion and the newness has worn off.

With some new gameplay, a ton of new loot, and lots more choices for character creation and advancement, Hordes of the Underdark is a must buy for fans of the original game. Its tight story and the focused chapters serve to give a better over all experience, even if there are some very difficult encounters lurking around the corners. Nothing beats the rush you get when those evil Drow are quaking in their boots at the thought of your character finding them and you realize what it really means to be Epic.

This is especially true of the cinematic cutscenes in the campaign, which occasionally feature key characters who are speaking--or bobbing their heads while gesticulating stiffly. Unlike other recent RPGs, such as BioWare's own Knights of the Old Republic, Hordes lacks facial animations or lip-synching. The expansion also reuses some sound effects and music from the previous games, though its new speaking characters deliver their lines competently. Hordes also features a great deal of all-new music that seems much more sweeping and appropriately epic. Ultimately, Hordes of the Underdark is a solid expansion pack that adds a substantial single-player campaign and interesting new options for multiplayer enthusiasts.

Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark bevat dezelfde mix van elementen.

Ganz große Klasse, was ihr hier wieder abgeliefert habt, Bioware!

Hordes of the Underdark takes Neverwinter Nights to new heights. It's an incredible single-player adventure that you'll want to experience more than once. Between the game's multiple endings and its awesome character creation, it's definitely worth playing this 20-plus hour game again just to get a different feel for its compelling story and tight gameplay. Module makers have lots of new goodies to work with and online adventurers can make even cooler characters to show off. While Shadows of Undrentide was a definite step up, Hordes of the Underdark is more of a leap.

Shadows of Undrentide, Hordes of the Underdark

All in all, HotU is a fairly solid expansion to the NWN franchise, both on- and off-line. The additions alone make it worth picking up, and, at the end of the day, it still manages to tell a hell of a story. After all, isn’t that what really counts?

Underdark has that woefully underbaked, released-just-in-time-for-the-holidays taint to it, and that’s just a colossal shame, because underneath that nastiness is a great, groat expansion. I eventually got over it. You may not.
