That aside, this is a game that will delight hockey fans and gamers. It not only looks and sounds great, but the options package is so well designed that this game can be enjoyed by anyone of any age or experience level. The latter changes in the online arena, but that is to be expected. If you don’t own a PC hockey game, but were thinking of it, NHL 2003 is your ticket to a terrific gaming experience.

Nur galt das alles im gleichen Maß schon für den Vorgänger. Und warum EA Sports das spaßige Trading-Card-System aus dem Options-Kader gestrichen hat, will mir einfach nicht in den Kopf. Grafisch und spielerisch hat sich für mich eindeutig zu wenig getan, um einen Neukauf zu rechtfertigen. NHL-Experten freuen sich freilich über Dynamic Deke und die dezenten KI-Verbesserungen – vor allem die schlaueren Torhüter sind für erfahrene Kufen-Cracks eine neue Herausforderung. Ich hingegen greife allerdings frühestens nächstes Jahr wieder zum Schläger.

Der Angriff gewinnt Spiele, die Abwehr gewinnt Meisterschaften, sagen die Amerikaner. Die alte Weisheit bringt das Spielgefühl von NHL 2003 auf den Punkt. Wer in der aktuellen Version der Eishockey-Simulation um den Stanley-Cup mitspielen will, muss sich richtig anstrengen. 30 Originalteams aus der NHL beteiligen sich an der Jagd auf die hässlichste Trophäe im Profisport, hinzu kommen noch einmal 20 Nationalmannschaften und vier All-Star-Teams. Neben dem Karrieremodus, bei dem Sie auch als Manager tätig werden dürfen, stehen Freundschaftsspiele, Playoffs und Turniere auf dem Programm - eine Möglichkeit zum Trainieren, wie etwa die genialen Drill-Übungen in Madden 2003, gibt es nicht.

If you own no hockey game for the PC, this is the one to get. Even if it wasn't really the only game in town, it would still come highly recommended on the basis of its presentation and action. Sure, I have lots of minor issues with the game, but that's just what they are -- minor issues. At the end of the day the game offers an incredibly fun and addictive vision of hockey.

In typical EA Sports fashion, the newest NHL is an improved but not essential upgrade. If money is no object or if you're particularly drawn to one of its new perks, you should by all means take the plunge with NHL 2003. But if you already own last year's NHL and aren't made of money, you may want to give it some thought.

With shoves and even fights crucial to success, this isn't, for all its iron-testicled bluster and Papa Roach soundtrack, a game for barrel-chested sports freaks. With its typically American goal-per-minute ethic, it's bordering on being an action game, and as such is a damn sight more entertaining than the endless legions of fottcrickolfby games.

Sans surprise, ce nouveau NHL est ce qui se fait de mieux à l'heure actuelle pour les hockeyeurs sur PC. Attention toutefois, seuls les fans ultimes et les amateurs de match en multijoueur devraient sentir une vraie différence par rapport à la version 2002.

Plus que jamais avec cette édition 2003 de NHL, à moins d'être un fan absolu ou un collectionneur, quiconque possède déjà l'édition 2002 pourra passer outre ce nouvel opus. Les améliorations ne sont pas nombreuses, et les nouveautés de gameplay risquent de ne pas faire l'unanimité. Le titre d'EA Sports n'en reste pas moins la référence du genre sur PC.

Pour ceux (les pauvres!) qui ne connaissent pas encore NHL 2003, c'est un passionnant jeu de hockey sur glace. Le premier NHL de la série est sorti en 1992 ! Autant dire que ce ne sont pas des débutants chez EA sports ! Dans ce NHL, il existe 5 possibilités de jeu : les pénaltys, la saison, le tournoi (qu'on peut créer soi-même), les playoffs et le match simple.

If you're a diehard fan of this series, there is a lot to like here. It plays a brand of hockey that EA Sports has perfected over the years. The multiplayer aspects are superb, but there comes a time when offering up the same style of play with the same old complaints isn't enough to warrant another $40 -- and that time is rapidly approaching.

So it's with irony that I play this year's NHL Live 2003, which tweaks the aforementioned format for a more true-to-life representation. The turbo button is toned down and big checks aren't nearly as effective. Goalies are more accurate.
