Just Adventure
Everyone who has been in high school carries some fond memories from those years. The friends, the fun, the first “serious” encounters with the opposite sex, the teachers giving you a hard time, the rebellions against those horrible parents who “can never understand”! Yes you did have some good times during your high school years - unless you were unfortunate enough to attend Leafmore High!

Overall, the game is certainly a steal at a mere twenty bucks. If you’re a fan of survival horror games, this is one unique game that you’ll surely enjoy to play through—despite its rather short length. If you have a friend that shares your passion, then there’s no reason to not pick this one up.

Game Chronicles
Survival horror games have been around for about a decade and yet no one had decided to use the teen horror movie setting as the basis for one, not until Obscure that is. Basically take teen characters from TV shows like Dawson's Creek and put them in a high school setting, add a scary storyline, mix in some messed up evil things and you’ve got yourself a teen survival horror game.

Wer Horror liebt kommt an Obscure: Learn about Fear nicht vorbei.

Obscure is a game that is just that - obscure. A rather hidden title that came to consoles and the PC, it is reminiscent of the older Resident Evil series with its third person perspective of survival horror. Luckily they improve on that formula by allowing a moving camera that will change position at certain points. While this is prone to horrible camera angles that can put you at a disadvantage during a fight, it is few and far between.

Rookie developer Hydravision delivers a good if shallow survival horror game. It is clear that the guys at Hydravision are fans of Capcom’s Resident Evil series as the similarities in gameplay are fairly evident. While this is one of the game’s best points (after all, the Resident Evil series is well liked), it simply cannot compare after Capcom totally modernized the genre with Resident Evil 4.

In conclusion, though the game does indeed have blood, violence and minor foul language, it contains nothing that a modern horror film doesn't, and any teenager that can comfortably watch (or enjoy) today's horror films will have no problem with the subject matter or graphic nature of Obscure.

Worth Playing
Drawing the inevitable comparisons to Resident Evil, Obscure is one of those survival horror games that keep cropping up all over the place, but it does a few things different from the normal style of those games. For one thing, it does not draw inspiration from the works of George Romero or H.P. Lovecraft. Instead, it pulls its genre from the good old American classic style of movies where a bunch of mid-twenties actors pretending to be teenagers get out there and get killed for your personal amusement. Scream and The Faculty are where this movie is sucking ideas from, and it pretty much works.

The survival-horror gaming genre (in my opinion) really started with the Resident Evil series. Being scared to death while playing a game was completely new to me and I became hooked right away. Since the first Resident Evil game there have been countless clones released. Some good, some not so good and others that are just Ok. Obscure falls into the latter category by offering a modern twist to the survival horror genre: the teen horror flick. Think of Obscure as the ultimate culmination of the movies Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and the Resident Evil series.

While the Resident Evil series might have overstayed its welcome, you can give Capcom credit for finally realizing that enough was enough. The developer ditched the franchise's tired survival-horror conventions, said goodbye to Raccoon City, and wound up with one of the best games so far this year in Resident Evil 4. This groundbreaking release set a new standard in action-horror, mirroring the accomplishment registered by its classic predecessor nine years ago. Some people, however, aren't getting the hint that gaming has moved on. Judging by Obscure, a survival-horror throwback best described as Resident Evil in a high school, French developer Hydravision is stuck in 1996. While this textbook copy of the Capcom classic is a competent regurgitation of the genre's clichés, your patience will be tested by déjà vu from the moment that the first monster bursts out of the walls.

G4 TV: X-Play
With the routine combat and puzzles, the primary entertainment in Obscure is generally identical to what you'll get out of any teen B-movie. It's presented well enough that there's always just one more reason to see what's in the next room or cutscene. But letting yourself be passively strung along is no substitute for real gut-wrenching involvement. You just might start to think that watching Scream seems like a pretty good idea, after all.

Following on the heels of Resident Evil 4's release, Hydravision needed something to set Obscure apart from the other games in the genre. I had high hopes for Obscure once I found out that it featured music by Sum 41 and was set in a different type of setting, a high school. However, even Sum 41 couldn't save Obscure, and it seems that the team spent more time developing their website which advertises the game than actually creating a unique game for fans of the genre to enjoy.
