Outwars

It is time to enlist. Unlike the movie Starship Troopers, this is great jumpsuit combat! Time to strap on your jump jets and get to boot camp. Only the best go on, and you will be the best, sooner or later. In my case the key word is "later," but I am having fun. I give this game a 90. Outwars is creative in the combination of the best parts of a combat simulation, adding the feel and touch of a 3D shooter. I like the combination a lot. This game will appeal to a lot of people; just do not let the default controls discourage you. Find what works for you and what is comfortable. If you play a lot of 3D shooters, this will expand your horizons and if you play a lot of simulations, it will allow you to play from the 3D shooter perspective, the best of both worlds.

Outwars may not be the prettiest of games - the characters are a little fiddly, the aliens truly awful-looking and the environments somewhat flat - but the gameplay is sufficiently original and engrossing to keep the vomit off your helmet faceplate.

Hinter der monotonen Grafik von Outwars stecken Features, die Neuerscheinungen wie Incoming oder Chasm glatt in den Schatten stellen. Das Missions-Design und die gute Spielbarkeit waren Singletrac offensichtlich wichtiger als viele Aha-Effekte. Daß diese Rechnung aufgeht, merkt man von der ersten Mission an: Schon nach wenigen Minuten wird man von der Handlung gefesselt und kommt dann stundenlang nicht mehr los. Wenn über die fehlende Force Feedback-Unterstützung und kleine grafische Unzulänglichkeiten hinweggesehen wird, bleibt ein abwechslungsreiches Actionspiel mit erstklassiger Atmosphäre und knackigem Schwierigkeitsgrad. Icke desto mindre är Outwars en snabb, engagerande och snygg titel med flera olika multiplayermöjligheter som bör utforskas. Testa om du har möjlighet.

Soms heb je van die momenten dat je leven als een film aan je voorbij flitst. Dan kun je maar beter zorgen dat die film een beetje interesseant is. Met Outwars heb je wat dat betreft niets te klagen.

One heck of a well-rounded title, and an experience to remember. This is what action gaming was meant to be: a strong plot backing up a dazzling 3D engine and challenging gameplay. Power ripples through the weaponry, and the single player monsters are devious in their attacks. It's a thoroughly enjoyable game, despite the few weaknesses like the absence of true co-op and some glitchy bugs. Let Outwars draw you in, and join the Dreadnaught corps. We'll make a marine of you yet.

Jeg kan godt lide Outwars, især efter lidt tid, hvor man havde vænnet sig til styringen, og havde fundet alle finesser (man bruger næsten alle taster på tastaturet), og på en halvvåd sommerdag udgør spillet et par glimrende timers underholdning.

In the end, Outwars is a good game that almost achieves greatness: It's definitely worth trying, and you might even wind up loving it. Give it a few tweaks here and there, though, and the sequel could move undisputedly into the top echelon of action games.

Das ist doch was für Papis Sohn! Normalerweise bin ich zugegebenermaßen ein Augentierchen. Outwars hat mich trotz der eher durchschnittlichen Grafik überzeugt, weil das Gameplay und das Leveldesign so abwechslungsreich sind. Sich in labyrinthartigen Gängen zu orientieren, gehört ebenso zum Geschäft eines modernen Kammerjägers wie strategische Überlegungen, wenn sich unser Held geschickt zwischen Hügeln bewegt oder bei Ballerduellen Reichweitenvorteile nutzt. Für enorme Spannung sorgen die heroisch-orchestralen Audiotracks und die zahlreichen Überraschungsmomente.

Gelegentlich wirkt Outwars wie der kleine Bruder von Mechwarrior: ähnlich inszenierte Einsätze (nur kürzer) und ein vergleichbares Ausstattungs-Menü (nur weniger umfangreich). Diese beiden Punkte sind dann auch das Beste an dem Spiel, insbesondere die abwechslungsreichen Missionen sorgen für Motivation. Weniger gelungen sind leider Präsentation und Atmospähre. So wirken die ach-so-bösen Außerirdischen fast ein bißchen lächerlich. Leicht nervig ist auch die Steuerung, da man nicht genau erkennen kann, wo die Spielfigur landet. Entsprechend oft stehe ich dann nicht auf einer sicheren Plattform, sondern stürze mit erschöpften Jetpack-Energievorräten mitten in einen Trupp lauernder Aliens.

Outwars kan aanzien worden als een eenvoudig schietspel waarin waarden zoals afslachting, verdelging en massale inzet van wapens primeren op tacktiek, vernuft en list.

Ultimately, Outwars fails to develop its potential well enough to push it beyond action-game competence. While a fun shoot-em-up with some interesting twists, Terra Nova it's not.

Die Technik ist tödlicher als ein ganzes Alien-Geschwader. Die klägliche Grafik schreckt auf Anhieb ab. Hat man bei Microsoft nicht verstanden, daß das Zeitalter der Bitmaps vorbei ist? Darüber hinaus sind die einzelnen Level auch noch schludrig und lieblos zusammengewürfelt. Durch Wände gehende Gegner sind noch eines der kleineren Übel.
