Rage’s story and overworld design feel dated, but its heart-pounding gunplay is a nice change of pace in a market filled with “follow me” and pop-and-fire shooters. While light RPG elements are present, this is mainly a game for players who love challenging combat experiences.

In diesem Sinne: „Smash the Authority!“

The story may not be all that engaging, but it never gets in the way of the tremendous action in RAGE. It's satisfying fun that does away with two-weapon limits and let's us decide how we want to fight. Let's hope we don't have to wait 7 more years for the next game.

Rage is a strong, amazing-looking game, worth playing through for the art on exhibit as much as the old-fashioned but still solid core gameplay. The legend of Id is not dead, and this is as much of an essential purchase for your FPS library as anything else they’ve ever done. It’s worth the cash, and it leaves a big impression, I’d say go for it.

Rage is most definitely and demonstratively an id Software title; the combat alone pushes it to the top of the current crop of first-person shooters, and the visual splendour will likely keep it there for some time. It may lack the open-world versatility of S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Fallout 3, the weapon diversity and sheer madness of Borderlands, yet it manages to provide thrilling corridor action and surprisingly well crafted racing that reasserts id's lofty position in the studio charts. Developers once looked to id to glean an insight into the future of gaming, particularly from a technical standpoint. This still rings true, but the data is clearly flowing in one direction. The only real failings in Rage are indicative of a studio that hasn't looked closely enough at the structure of other titles that include storytelling and NPC interaction at a far more comprehensive level.

Still, it's pretty damned good. Despite its nods to other genres, Rage is a solid FPS. It might not quite hearken back to the oldest days of id, but it points towards something even better. I just hope that it won't take them eight more years to make their next game.

Ultimately, then, what you have here is a competently delivered title that's mostly very polished and packed with variety (despite the occasional revisit to previously cleared-out levels). It feels a bit schizophrenic in terms of the types of things you do and the way the title is pieced together, yet the individual components are all a lot of fun. It is, unfortunately, somewhat less than the sum of its parts. A good game and certainly worth experiencing, but not as cohesive or as impactful as what we were expecting the masters at id to deliver. Rather than raise the benchmark, as all of id's previous games have done, it fails to meet the lofty standards already set by some of its contemporaries.

The great controls and useful weapon upgrades help make Rage’s shooting parts a lot of fun, but the storyline fails to create any real tension and the game’s characters, friendly and hostile, never do or say anything memorable. As a result, Rage starts to drag toward the second half after most of the mechanics and upgrades are introduced because the fictional world isn’t very interesting. Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into Rage is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. Rage isn’t revolutionary, but is an expertly crafted, beautiful shooter.

Overall, RAGE is another great shooter from id. The shortcomings in the single-player campaign don't derail the game, but unfortunately, the multiplayer experience is lacking in too many ways. It has no staying power and isn't recommended for anybody looking to spend hours playing against their friends online. Beautiful game? Check. Great game play? 80 percent. Enthralling story? 75 percent. Great multiplayer? Uh ... 10 percent?

Game Over Online
In the end, Rage reminds me a lot of Borderlands, another game that, while uniquely awesome in its own way, ultimately left me disappointed: same basic locale, same silent protagonist, same pseudo-open world, same focus on driving to missions, same side quest driven, bare-bones story. To be honest, the fact that Rage is a better shooter with much better vehicle controls is tempered by the lack of RPG elements that would allow you to invest in, or "own," your character. Instead, you're just sort of... there. Having a coherent story to drive the action is necessary, and while we certainly see a distinct lack of that in modern shooters, at least most have more than Rage offers in that regard. Don't get me wrong, Rage is a good game, and one that is certainly worth your time, but I couldn't help feeling like there were a string of missed opportunities to build on a solid foundation that left me not only wanting more, but wondering just how good it could have been.

Rage is a quality shooter that hits its mark most of the time, it's just disappointing that after all of the hype and all of the delays, it plays things so safe. Just when the game really starts to gain momentum, it starts to feel stale, and then abruptly ends. id has always been dependable for quality shooters -- they just can't all be that innovative.

There's a lot to like about Rage, but for every good thing it does there's something equally annoying or dated, leading to a very uneven experience. Adroit fans of the first person shooter will still enjoy themselves, especially after the first couple of yawn-inducing hours pass and things really start hotting up, but it's not quite the masterpiece we know id were once capable of.

CPU Gamer
Even factoring in the (token) multiplayer, Rage is a brief game in a small world, with two small towns and not much else. Despite my criticisms, the fact that I really want more says that ultimately this is a pretty good game, just with much unrealized potential. Perhaps if the game were larger, Bethesda’s ability to make a compelling story would kick in, and there’d be enough time to really investigate the crafting options. Perhaps given more time, they would have come up with ways to make the battles become more epic. As it is, Bethesda should definitely take some lessons here on how to make fights more exciting, while id would probably be better off simply abandoning the deeper role playing and story concepts attempted here, and focusing on what they’ve done so well in the past: making good shooters.

GameSpot
Though the story gets a bit too cliched, there is a robust amount of adventuring to be done in a world that rewards you for your attention. It's a shame that your explorations are marred by Rage's technical shortcomings, and only time will tell how much patches will be able to fix these problems. Rage is better enjoyed on an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but regardless of which platform you play on, it still offers a rich and rewarding adventure.

At about the halfway point of RAGE, I thought I knew what I was going to write about with this review. It was going to be about how id Software abandoned the PC with RAGE and it took a couple patches to fix it; about how there’s no real open world, how the driving is kind of dumb, and how you backtrack way too much. I was going to harp on the fact that the enemies prioritize animation and won’t get knocked out of it if you keep shooting them. Instead, I’ll say that RAGE has problems. It’s married to old school design methodologies, puts the technology over game, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t walk away satisfied – even though I didn’t see Dopefish anywhere.

The fact the general gamer got a look in and a play seems an after-thought. Rage is not DNF bad by any means, but it's certainly not worth the full price and the hassle. Wait until there is a Steam sale after a bunch more patches, then consider it.
