Just Adventure (Nov 17, 2004)
The Adventure Company and Kheops have done a terrific job with Return to Mysterious Island. This is a solid adventure game with clever puzzles, beautiful graphics, and interesting locations. The idea of surviving on a deserted island far from civilization may not be a new theme, but it has been applied very successfully in this game. Return to Mysterious Island is a great way to rediscover a Jules Verne classic. If the idea of overcoming nature’s challenges, surviving in a forgotten land, and unlocking the mysteries of an exotic island interest you, do not miss this game.
GameBoomers (Nov 14, 2004)
Return to Mysterious Island is a great game for those who love inventory puzzles. Its strong points are its unique inventory combination system and puzzles that allow multiple solutions to problems. It isn't a very long or difficult game for someone who has played a lot of adventure games. It is not a game for those who are looking for a strong story or in-depth character development. But it is a fun game and would probably be a good choice for someone who is new to adventure games.
If you're the type of gamer that won't quit until they unlock everything then you'll have to go through the game multiple times trying every combination to complete the same puzzles to get more points. If you just want to complete the game and see the ending then you'll still be satisfied as it has a bargain price tag of $20 so you won't feel cheated.
In Return to Mysterious Island, Kheops Studio has taken a Jules Verne classic and woven a brand new adventure game around it. But unlike last year's Journey to the Center of the Earth, developed by Frogwares, Return to Mysterious Island actually does incorporate a good deal of the original story into the game.
Game Over Online (Dec 08, 2004)
And so am I recommending Return to Mysterious Island? You bet. In a year that has been lacking in adventures and role-playing games -- the two genres I typically review -- Return to Mysterious Island is more than a welcome find, and, along with Syberia II, is one of the best adventure games of the year. So if you know an adventure game player in need of a Christmas present, here you go.
Game Chronicles (Jan 25, 2005)
This is a hard puzzle game that’s extremely fun and rewarding. A game that you can really get into and play for hours on end (or straight through to completion). It’s a mental game, but that’s why people love this genre. With its beautifully drawn pre-rendered backgrounds and upbeat, perfectly themed music, Return to Mysterious Island will surround you in its world and not let go until you solve its many mysteries. And you get to befriend a wild monkey named “Jep.” Who wouldn’t like a pet monkey?

Rozgrywka dużo by zyskała na zwiększeniu obszaru działań.
Gameinatrix (Jan 05, 2005)
It's true that the Adventure Company is known in various circles as the kings and queens of puzzles. The argument as whether or not a puzzle game is a "real" game is on going in the gaming community. How can you have a game with no action in it?
It’s not about to revolutionize the adventure genre, but fans of such games will not be disappointed.
GameZebo (Apr 07, 2008)
Return to Mysterious Island is a great adventure for fans of point-and-click games thanks to above average production values and a deep story that you can sink many hours into. It's also a worthy homage to the early sci-fi spirit of Jules Verne with a compelling mixture of nature and gadgets and, without giving any plot points away, some classic Vernian twists.

Combine 1 part Jules Verne classic with 5 parts survivalist challenge. Sift through semi-fine filter to remove chunky dexterity elements. Add 4 parts tropical paradise with 2 parts eye candy. Let sit for several minutes of graphic admiration. Pour in 492 inventory puzzles, and top with one obligatory cute monkey. Knead for 12-15 hours. Allow to rise above all expectations. What do you get? Return to Mysterious Island, by Kheops Studio.
GameSpy (Nov 19, 2004)
If you love inventory-heavy adventure games, then rejoice: Return to Mysterious Island was tailor-made for you. Where some adventure game designers throw a bunch of totally abstract and unrelated puzzles together and call it a day, developer Kheops took the time to do things right. Return to Mysterious Island features not only an interesting setting inspired by a classic novel, but also puzzles that really tie into the game world and make good sense.
Quandary (Nov, 2004)
There is a lot of inventory manipulation but it's fun making up different concoctions. The healthy amount of feedback and the well designed interface mean that the game never gets too difficult. Also many of the problems have more than one way to solve them which is good in one respect but I fear there was a trade-off because Return to Mysterious Island could have been longer. I enjoyed it but I wanted a bit more, more places to explore and more opportunity to admire the Nautilus, and get to know Mina and, perhaps, Captain Nemo a little better. To compensate there is a scoring system which awards points as you solve puzzles.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Jan, 2005)
Adventurearchiv (Dec 07, 2004)
In the end I really had a lot of fun playing „Return to the Mysterious Island" although it was quite a short pleasure of about 10 hours. I might have succeeded quicker than that if the sheer amount of items had not confused me so badly later on. It was actually entertaining to explore the island and its hidden spots but I expected more after playing the demo. In comparison a lot of time is needed to make yourself comfortable on the island, that is to look for food and tools, but after a certain point in the game when we know where we are heading it became harder to concentrate on what smaller tasks had to be accomplished first, the spirit of exploration suffered and the speed in playing accelerated. From this moment I had a sneaking suspicion that there was not enough story to drive on the action accordingly.
GameSpot (Dec 03, 2004)
Aside from a few overly convoluted puzzles and some other flaws common to traditional adventure games, puzzle-solving doesn't get much more captivating than this.
GameZone (Nov 23, 2004)
I had great fun with this game, as did my husband, but it's not for everyone. Fans of games like Jewels of the Oracle may miss having logical puzzles, and there is no humor to speak of. However, if you enjoy leisurely exploration with no deadlines, and non-linear gameplay, then you should enjoy this game, especially for the $20 price tag.
Meristation (Feb 16, 2005)
HonestGamers (Jul 03, 2007)
But all the unsightly end-of-game puzzles come to is a single bump in the ground of an otherwise smooth trail. Return to Mysterious Island presents a lot of things correctly: it's not just another adventure game and it's not just a clichéd expansion of a popular media. It's the story of a girl lost at sea, having to survive on nothing but her wits, a computer battery made out of a lemon and a monkey with the ability to grease windmill cogs.

Most notably, though, Return to Mysterious Island is an archetype for Kheops Studio's later games. Adventure gamers who know and like these later games can certainly find a similar level of enjoyment in Return to Mysterious Island.
GameDaily (Dec 09, 2004)
Return to Mysterious Island was a fun experience while it lasted, but sadly, it didn't go on nearly as long as it could have. If only some more time was put into its development. With a larger game world and a more interactive game engine it could have been made into a classic, just like its inspiration, but sadly it falls short of expectations. Thus the average score has been given: A good play if you're a fan of the adventure/puzzle genre and not hugely critical but definitely not for everyone.
Gamekult (Dec 22, 2004)
