It's good solid shooty goodness at a budget price. About the only thing bad I can say about Rogue Trooper is that it’s over too soon (three or four nights will about do it), and the main character is way-overpowered, especially with those tasty mini-mines! Hmmm…mini-mines. A real solid action title from the guys at Rebellion, and a good title to tide you over until the boys of fall arrive. Drop a few bucks and enjoy.

It's amazing when you sit down with a game that you had the lowest of expectations for, only to find an incredibly well put together experience. It certainly doesn't happen that often, but Rogue Trooper from Eidos and Rebellion is one of the most impressive third-person shooters in recent memory. Based on the comic of the same name, Rogue Trooper is far from the average run and gun shooter, with players able to tackle levels in a variety of ways, using stealth or more gung-ho tactics.

Action games tend to get stale rather quickly. Especially now, when third-person explode-a-thons rule the marketplace. Developers need to come up with ways to set them apart. That, or go the traditional route and just do it better than anyone else does. Look at God of War. It didn't really do anything new, but it offered a wild degree of polish and refinement.

Up until roughly a week ago, my knowledge of 2000 AD extended exactly as far as Judge Dredd. When I took on the task of reviewing today’s featured game, Rogue Trooper, I had no idea whatsoever that there was a connection. Thanks to the magic of Wikipedia, I quickly learned that this comic company in fact has an extensive legacy of action-packed story-telling that extends back 30 years and covers many different titles. Furthering my astonishment, I learned that this is the fourth game released that follows the Rogue Trooper! How I’ve managed to go for so long with my head in the sand regarding this franchise is beyond me. With that in mind, I’m grateful to have been given the chance to educate myself with this 3rd person perspective 3D shooter.

I've been a long time reader of the comic 2000AD, so when I heard one of their most successful characters, Rogue Trooper, was about to get a game of his own I was very excited. However, this wasn't without a certain amount of trepidation, as Rebellion, who now own the comic, are also responsible for the rather weak Dredd vs Death. I was concerned that they'd completely miss the point of Rogue Trooper and just go for another bog-standard first person shooter. I was wrong about that, but while my fears about their treatment of the source material proved unfounded, I still do have some reservations.

Carving out a place among the glut of third-person shooting games can be a tough task, as the well-intentioned but entirely average Rogue Trooper proves. A combination of straight-forward shooting, stale sci-fi nonsense, and some clever use of gadgets and gear, Rogue Trooper manages to provide a few hours of gaming goodness despite some mediocre ingredients.

Rogue Trooper is a third-person shooter based on the 2000AD comic of the same name. In case you don't follow British comic books, Rogue Trooper is a gritty sci-fi strip about a genetically engineered soldier named Rogue who fights in the perpetual war that wages on the planet of Nu Earth. It's an interesting premise, and the story translates well into a video game, allowing for some unique gameplay mechanics. Unfortunately, the standout features in the game are negated by a stunted single-player campaign, limited multiplayer, and a handful of annoying design flaws.

Maybe you've heard of Rogue Trooper? Ha-ha, busted! You're over 30 and probably a geek! There aren't many others who'd recognize this series of British comics about a futuristic soldier who carries around the consciousness of his buddies in his equipment. It's an odd choice for a game license, until you consider that U.K.-based developer Rebellion has worked on a game based on the Judge Dredd series, also published by British comic magazine 2000 AD.

Games like Rogue Trooper make my brain hurt, mainly because it tries to be a competent third person action game with attitude, but ultimately fails at this goal. While it does have momentary flashes of intrigue, it ends up falling prey to the trappings of being a mediocre action shooter.
