One of the few historical strategy games on the PC that is a worth while purchase now days and easily one of the best in recent memory and I have a long memory. This game is a must buy for strategy fans. Koei knocked this one out of the park and hopefully Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI will lead to a Romance XII with even greater improvements to the art and gameplay.
Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
I haven’t spent much time with strategy titles lately, so it took a while to get back on the horse, but once I got into the groove, explored all of the interface’s features and settled into a gameplay pattern, I was rewarded with a fascinating, beautifully designed game that had me wanting to run home and jump back into the action.
If you can overcome the daunting task of getting into Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI, as well as ingesting all the finer points, then you could really grow to love it. This game is pure strategy and should appeal to those with a definite interest in the genre. As I've already stated, it's not for everyone, but as far as turn-based strategies go, RTK is up there with the best of them.
Sound like a lot? It is. Even for a veteran strategy otaku like yours truly, the learning curve is intimidating -- but if you're willing to unwrap its numerous layers, R3KXI has a lot of USDA Select packed into it.
The considerable investment of time and focus it takes to begin to enjoy Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI is probably enough to turn off most gamers. Having been spoon-fed our entertainment for so long, it's a bit jarring to come up against a title that not only doesn't apologize for its endlessly meticulous details, but actually celebrates them. By itself, that's not necessarily something to criticize, but it does mean that most gamers aren't willing (or even equipped in some cases) to climb the steep learning curve required to unlock the actual fun that's waiting beneath. Unfortunately, even for those few who manage to reach a level of understanding and proficiency, the game's slow pace means the rewards won't come often enough to encourage them to keep playing for long.
Absolute Games (AG.ru)
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
All in all, Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI probably won't seduce any new players from outside of the dedicated strategy folds. Though undeniably beautiful and well designed, the game is simply too difficult to learn (the tutorial weighs in at almost six hours) and too slowly paced for most players not already attenuated to its type. While die-hard fans of the series will most certainly crave the meticulous planning and Machiavellian diplomacy RotTK XI has to offer, the game is arcane and frustratingly slow to the uninitiated.
Ultimately, I return back to the concept of the novel. Forgetting the book Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI is based on, its closest literary companion is probably something written by Tolstoy: long, difficult and hard to get into. But perseverance is rewarded and the game is ultimately unique. It's blatantly not for everyone, and you need to be conditioned to even begin to enjoy it, but there's certainly something deep and rewarding underneath all the layers of trifling bureaucracy.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI is almost certainly the last of the series on this generation of consoles, and does leave one wondering where exactly are they going to take it next? It’s not like there are going to be any more chapters added to the original novel (and its a long enough read as it is). Adding these extra bells and whistles to the already solid formula make this a worthwhile purchase to newcomers even slightly interested in the series, whereas seasoned RotTK players will either give this one a miss or find some fun tinkering with the new additions. Either way, Koei have delivered another top quality entry in the genre they do better than anyone else. Here at DarkZero, we await the first truly next-gen version with bated breath.
RotTK XI is a decent game, but it lacks any real oomph to make anyone but hardcore fans play it in the long term. Everyone else is likely to get bored sooner than intended and migrate back to playing a more satisfying strategy game like Civilization IV.
