Nevertheless, although my head sometimes chastises this sim for what its got wrong, my heart is singing the highest praise for what it has right. Not since I first started flying simulations have I been this engrossed. With a thousand planes on the screen at once, BOB has brought me closer than ever before to the most famous air battle of all time.

In spite of these problems, Battle of Britain could end up being a classic in the genre. Unfortunately, many players won't be able to appreciate it because of these same problems. Those lucky enough to be able to run Battle of Britain out of the box, or persistent enough to tweak the game until it works, will discover a truly impressive simulation like nothing to date since European Air War. If you're experienced with air-combat simulations and you manage to get it working well, you'll undoubtedly fall in love with Battle of Britain.

Battle of Britain is een opvallend knappe WOII flightsim met jammer genoeg enkele storende minpuntjes.

What Rowan did here has not yet been seen in any other flight sim. During a single mission you can see hundreds of planes in the sky. This is a sight to behold. Unfortunately, it will take great skill to join an air combat of these proportions and stay alive for more than two minutes.

Rowan has done an excellent job of balancing this simulation so that all gamers will have a chance to enjoy recreating one of the most famous historical battles of World War II history. As one might expect from a simulation where several hundred independent units are being rendered and maintained at once, there are indeed some light performance issues with this title, but the adjustable nature of almost every component in Battle of Britain makes things very workable. When the dust settles from the performance issues, this game is one of the most enjoyable dogfighters to be released in a long time. Hardcore desk-jockeys will definitely not want to pass up the chance to recreate one of the most dreaded battles in aviation history, and when you see the sky full of fighters and bombers, you will understand just how enjoyable Rowan’s Battle of Britain can be.

Battle of Britain features a complex but scalable flight model, a slightly interesting command module, and good graphics and sound. If you are interested in recreating the first major air battle in human history, Rowan's Battle of Britain is definitely a title you should consider. Although some novice flight simulation pilots may be turned off by the difficulty (and utter realism) of the plane modeling, an investment in Battle of Britain is well worth the eventual returns.

Finally, there are a number of small but irritating bugs such as mis-labelled keys on the keyguide, or key commands that function only erratically. Some basic functions are consequently difficult to figure out (the manual is little help in this regard) or to get working properly.

So Battle of Britain fails to live up to Rowan's previous air titles. This is all the more depressing given the fact that Empire is shifting Rowan out of the PC sim development market and into console development. Battle of Britain is definitely the most involved recreation of the conflict that we've seen yet but the density of the flight model will definitely alienate some gamers. If you're really into flight sims, then the game will reward any investment you make in it. But if you're looking for something fun then you'd do better to look elsewhere.

If you are a fan of flight simulators, especially of WWII, by all means get this game. Be forewarned, it is difficult to get the hang of, but once learned and understood, it is quite a lot of fun. I would say this game is aimed more at the hard core fan, casual gamers should look elsewhere for their flight time, until they are ready to take to the skies over Britain.

Battle of Britain comes close to achieving excellence, given its detailed campaign and challenging dogfights. However the game's flaws lead to an initial poor impression that only partially dissipates, given that European Air War back in 1998 had better terrain, skies and smoothness of flight. Flight simulations are notoriously difficult to get right and Battle of Britain is a valiant effort: experienced pilots looking for a challenge or a history lesson should consider this game - beginners might be better off elsewhere.

Dog-fighting during the Battle of Britain. The bugs alone dictate the low score. There is fun value here, but you might want to wait until there is a patch available that can fix the problems some gamers are experiencing with this title.

In short, for a flight simulator to appeal to a wider audience than plane-enthusiasts, it must have an easy setting that's enjoyable to those with less than hard-core interest. Rowan's Battle of Britain, despite being a lot of fun to look at, doesn't quite get there.
