Runaway: A Road Adventure

Gestolpert bin ich über Runaway im September 2001 auf dem Madrider Flughafen, als ich auf einen Anschlussflug warten musste. Obwohl damals noch die deutsche bzw. englische Version angekündigt waren, konnte ich obgleich des günstigen Preises von knapp € 25,- nicht widerstehen (schließlich wollte man sich auf dem bevorstehenden 12 Stunden-Flug nach Buenos Aires ein wenig Unterhaltung gönnen). Heute kann ich sagen, „Glück gehabt“, denn andere Versionen sind bisher nicht erschienen und ich hätte womöglich eines der besten Grafikadventures der letzten Jahre verpasst. Es kann jedem Adventure-Fan nur wärmstens empfohlen werden und ist außerdem vielleicht einer der schönsten Gründe, endlich Spanisch zu lernen – immerhin die weltweit wichtigste Sprache nach Englisch.

Runaway brings a flashback to a time when non-stop acting wasn’t important and storyline was key. There was a time where, believe it or not, real-time-strategy games and first-person-shooters didn’t define PC gaming. Sure, there are other genres, but when one thinks of PC gaming, those two pop up right away. I didn’t partake in the original point-and-click adventure game revolution, but thanks to The Adventure Company (Syberia, Dark Fall, Post Mortem) I have played a few. Runaway is different though. It takes place in the present, and doesn’t use high-resolution pre-rendered backgrounds.

Podsumowując: Runaway to wspaniała, klasyczna przygodówka z oprawą godną dzisiejszych czasów. Czerpie garściami z chlubnego Broken Sworda (to akurat wcale nie wada!), ma doskonały klimat z USA rodem, fajną fabułę i ZNAKOMITE, tak odmienne od oczekiwanego, zakończenie (musicie jednak dotrwać do końca creditsów). Tylko grać, tym bardziej, że w dniu premiery cena tej perełki wynosiła jedynie 50 zł!!!

"Runaway" does not have to stand for beeing compared with other games because it is a class of its own. It has perfected the elements of the classic point&click adventures and offers highest quality in all fields. The original, exciting story full of drama and humor, new sympathetic characters, well balanced puzzles, great graphics and sound, perfect handling and the movie-like effect lets small reductions concerning the cutscenes and the noticeable linearity hardly carry weight. In addition developer and publisher tried very hard not only to create a wonderful game but also an interactive environment and a good support, to help the gamers in the best possible way. Who does not know Runaway yet, should buy it. Who already knows it, should get it for his friends!

Throughout the years, Spain has offered us some great, underrated gems like the text adventures of AD, La Abadía Del Crimen, an isometric perspective game that made the most of 8-bits computers, Igor: Objective Uikokahonia, from the very same Pendulo Studios, not to mention some great titles from Dinamic, Opera Soft and Topo. Runaway somehow seems like the culmination of it all - it might be the best graphic adventure Spain has produced.

Od czasu Syberii Runaway jest chyba najlepszą przygodówką w jaką miałam okazję zagrać. Wpływ na moje zdanie miała m.in. grafika, która pomimo, że jest animowana jest bardzo ciekawa i dopracowana. Była ona tworzona z wykorzystaniem nie tylko technik tradycyjnych, ale też grafiki trójwymiarowej. Musze przyznac, że bardzo spodobał mi się tytułowy utwór w wykonaniu Liquor.

Wem die Wertung zu hoch ist : Es ist eine Adventure- wertung und als solche sollte sie auch betrachtet werden. Denn die Qualität und der Spielspass der in Runaway steckt, erinnerte mich persönlich an gute alte "Baphomets Fluch"-Zeiten und bot mir Adventurespass, wie ich ihn seit Monkey Island 3 nicht mehr erleben durfte. Dass auch viele andere dieser Meinung waren, scheint der in Arbeit befindliche Nachfolger zu zeigen, wer die Geschichte von Brian und Gina wieder an andere Orte dieser Erde bringen wird.

Kurz und knapp: 'Runaway' ist der neue Genrekönig. Seit 'Monkey Island 3', und das ist immerhin schon 5 Jahre her, ist mir kein so gutes Adventure mehr in die Hände gekommen. Und 'Runaway' ist quasi in allen Bereichen nochmals einen Deut besser, ob es nun die fantastische Grafik, die tollen Rätsel oder die spannende Story ist. Da sind auch kleinere Schnitzer wie die teilweise schwer zu findenden Gegenstände oder die pixeligen Videos schnell vergessen. 'Runaway' beweist eindrucksvoll, dass ein aktuelles Spiel von einer tollen Story leben kann auch gut ohne Grafikprotz a la 'UT 2003' auskommt.

Comme il est facile de comprendre le succès du jeu en Allemagne et en Espagne. Runaway a tout ce qu'il faut, là où il faut. Depuis le temps qu'on attendait qu'un éditeur ose sortir un nouveau titre de ce genre, on ne peut que se réjouir. Avec de la chance, les grands de cette industrie comprendront que les jeux d'aventure ont aussi leur place sur le marché...

So, since I’m the jackass who actually purported to make some sort of definitive statement ranking the top 20 adventure games of all-time, the question naturally follows, does this game have a place on that list? A second playing will have to take place before I can answer decisively, but right now the answer is, Runaway is absolutely one of the top twenty adventures ever. If not for the slightly abbreviated length, and a bit of a dead spot midway through the fourth act, I would have no difficulty fitting it into the top ten. This is a brilliant game, an incredibly beautiful and enjoyable adventure with a story that is both accessible and escapist, and the first true must-own adventure in a very long time. And to think that I almost never had the chance to play it.

In general, RUNAWAY: A Road Adventure is a pleasing addition to the Adventure genre. The in-depth storyline, eccentric characters, creative graphic techniques, and catchy soundtrack makes for an exiting adventure that PC Gamers should add to their collection.

Alle kymmenen tunnin jälkeen, lopputekstien vieriessä, päällimmäisenä velloi tyytyväisyyden tunne. Tarina imi mukaansa ja ongelmia oli hauska ratkoa. Yhdeksänkympin haamuraja olisi voinut mennä rikki ilman pieniä ruttuja: välivideot olisi pitänyt hioa loppuun saakka ja muutamat typerät puzzlet leikata karskisti pois.

Runaway es una aventura gráfica nacional que destaca por sus estupendos gráficos, su interesante argumento y su nivel de dificultad adecuadamente medido para no desesperar a novatos y agradar a veteranos. Sería un juego imprescindible si no fuera porque está aquejado del sempiterno mal que sufren los juegos de PC en los tiempos que corren: los "bugs".

Alles in allem ist Runaway das Adventure der letzten Jahre, das man haben muss. Es sollte in keiner Spielesammlung fehlen und ist auch ein Tipp an alle, die sonst nichts mit diesem Genre anfangen können. Denn alle Schwächen werden durch die tollen Charaktere, die Grafik, die spannende und gleichzeitig lustige Story locker wettgemacht.

Runaway: A Road Adventure is certainly one of the top games of this year. There aren't many new point and click adventures made, but this one is certainly a treat for fans of the genre, as well as a great way to be introduced to the genre. The game is fun whether you are 10 or 50 and has good parts in it for any type of gamer. If you are a fan of adventure games and only want to buy one game this year, I would certainly suggest Runaway: A Road Adventure.

In this day of gaming, especially PC gaming, it is very difficult to stumble upon a great adventure. Last years breakout title was of course Syberia, and this years would’ve been Runaway; if it wasn’t for Syberia II, though this could change with the recent delay of Microids' upcoming adventure title. Runaway is the best adventure game out right now, and my early nominee of the best adventure game this year. Though that is an early assumption, chances are my feelings will stay the same. If you’re a big fan of adventure games, or finally have decided to dive into the realm of adventure gaming, Runaway should be the first game on your list.

Vaikka Runaway ei olekaan mikään täydellinen pelityyppinsä mestariteos, otetaan nykyään kaikki vähänkään siedettävät seikkailupelit aina avosylin vastaan. Vaikka pelissä on kieltämättä omat puutteensa juonikuljetuksen, dialogin ja ongelmasuunnittelun saralla, tarjoaa se kuitenkin erinomaisella grafiikalla ja vivahteikkaalla äänimaailmalla höystettyä tasaisen varmaa, laadukasta ja perinteitä kunnioittavaa perusseikkailua josta kenekään pelityylistä pitävän ei pitäisi jäädä paitsi.

Sie handelt von Mafia-Bossen, Auftragskillern, in der Wüste gestrandeten Transvestiten und diversen Todesfällen. Es ist eine spannende Geschichte und es ist die Geschichte seines Lebens...

Runaway: A Road Adventure is a must have for every adventure fan. Except for a couple of downpoints (which can be fixed) it’s a game that kept me busy for a reasonable amount of time. The puzzles can give you some brainwork but are solveable with some common sense.

"Runaway: A Road Adventure" es una aventura gráfica de gran calidad que está por encima de la media, con un aspecto visual muy atractivo, buen sonido y un sencillo manejo de interfaz que siempre es un dato importante y deseable. Brian, el protagonista cumple bien con su papel aunque a veces nos dé la sensación de que es un poco sosillo y despistado, pero solo en principio. Por otro lado, Gina le da un toque de cierta intriga y exotismo a la historia que no le viene nada mal.

Runaway is fiendishly clever. It is far removed from the old text-based ADVENT days, yet in some ways it is the embodiment of how the genre matured yet stayed true to its roots. The GUI stays out of the way and you are on your own, to point and click, then stare and think. The graphics are superb in places, but the bottom line is still game play, and genre fans will be right at home.

Still, isn't that the very reason why classic adventure gamers are said to belong to the S&M sub-culture of the gaming population? After all, it all comes down to your personal affinities. If you happen to be a classic adventure fan, I advise you not to miss this one. It may not be the Monkey Island substitute you've been looking for, but it sure as hell is good enough given the sorry state of the classic adventure genre today.

Amoureux des jeux d'aventure à la point'n click voilà Runaway le nouveau chef d'oeuvre de Pendulos Studios. Aux commandes de Brian, vous allez, tout au long de votre aventure, faire des rencontres à la fois agréables et étranges. En compagnie de Gina, l'héroïne pulpeuse, vous allez voir du pays. Vous traverserez entre autres New York, San Francisco et le désert de l'Arizona.

Runaway: A Road Adventure is a new entry in the traditional adventure game genre from Spanish developer Pendulo Studios. Well, Runaway is new to the United States--the game's been available in Europe for quite a while, but it's just now showing up on these shores with fully translated text and English dialogue. In the fast-paced world of PC games, a delay of just a few months can make your game look dated when it's finally released, so you might expect a delay of well over a year to be Runaway's death knell. However, adventure games depend more on creativity than technology, and it's for this reason that Runaway is just as enjoyable today as it was when it was originally released. The game is a reasonably well-made attempt at revitalizing the adventure game spirit of old, and though it may not quite live up to the standard-bearers of the genre, it's certainly of sufficient quality that adventure fans should give it a look.

So ist es aber immer noch eine Kaufempfehlung für Adventurefans und auch für die, die es noch werden wollen. Das Spiel überzeugt in Sachen Sound und auch die Zwischensequenzen sind herrlich anzuschauen. Der Spieler fühlt sich wie in einem Film. Freut euch auf jeden Fall schon mal auf die Endsequenz, zwar ist dann ein grandioses Spiel zu Ende, aber die letzten Szenen setzt dem ganzen Spiel noch das I-Tüpfelchen auf.

Au final, ce Runaway relève avec panache le défi de l'aventure à l'ancienne et se montre assez réussi dans son genre pourtant réputé comme désuet. Les défis proposés tout au long des nombreuses heures de jeu sont de nature à passionner les nouveaux amateurs comme les vieux baroudeurs et on prend un certain plaisir à découvrir la palette de personnages souvent très drôles que nous ont concocté les développeurs de Pendulo Studios. Le charisme très limité des deux héros et la trame du scénario, peu inspirée, calmeront peut-être un peu les ardeurs des joueurs et le manque d'indices sur la marche à suivre à de nombreux endroits en frustrera beaucoup. Un bon jeu tout de même qui vient agréablement combler une place laissée vide depuis trop longtemps.

While all these problems would seem to imply the title is not worth buying, the opposite is true. Runaway is actually a decent little adventure game. It's certainly not the best adventure game ever made, but it's not a disaster, either. The story and many of the puzzles are far too interesting to dismiss.

S’il ne marquera pas d’une pierre blanche l’histoire des jeux vidéo de par sa durée de vie et de son manque d’originalité, Runaway se révèle être un excellent divertissement. Les amateurs d’aventure old school passeront un très bon moment à se tarabiscoter devant l’écran… comme au bon vieux temps.

The best thing about Runaway is the sheer delight at sinking into the type of adventure game that you really might have thought no one made anymore. The environments are bright and colorful, the inventory-based puzzles are diverse and challenging, and the story pretty solid.

Runaway is a well-made example traditional adventure gaming, with an exciting plot and plenty of interesting puzzles --- hampered by a few technical annoyances and some ridiculous pixel hunts.

Runaway: A Road Adventure has faced a number of marketing challenges. The game is first released in Spanish in 2001. The English translation is not released until 2003, almost 2 years after the Spanish original. The delay is, in part, due to a protracted change of the English publisher from GMX Media to Tri Synergy. Fortunately, the game has survived with enough interest to spawn a sequel, aptly titled Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle. This ensures the return of Brian and Gina for another runaway adventure.
