Chariots of the Dogs may well be the best offering so far in this successful series. I love the new characters (including past and future versions of Sam and Max). The repartee, as always, is snappy and entertaining. The voice acting is wonderful and the music is peppy and upbeat.
Don't let that dissuade you from playing, though; despite that very, very small flaw, Chariots of the Dogs is satisfying, surprising, hilarious and fun. It's the best Sam and Max episode ever, and it climactically delivers on what the episodic format always promised. I already knew the Sam and Max episodic series was one of the best things to ever happen to adventure gaming; until Chariot of the Dogs, I didn't know it was one of the best things to happen to gaming, period.
I guess the strongest sentiment I can make is this: I've been an adventure gaming journalist for more than ten years now. At some point along the line, playing adventure games became largely a job, a responsibility, a duty. Even through the first season and a half of Sam & Max, a series that should cut through the stone hearts of even the most jaded, I have mostly played with detached critical admiration. Chariots of the Dogs sucked me in and completely immersed me with the joy that comes from playing a special adventure game. With this series, it took a few tries and there were a few wrinkles to be ironed out along the way, but it has all led up to this three-hour jewel you'll find here—a flawless adventure gaming experience that will be treasured by all. The only negative to be discussed is really the ultimate cliffhanger—how exactly is Telltale supposed to follow this up?
Cheat Code Central
Chariots of the Dogs continues on in the same clever, funny, and endearing way as past cases, and it's one of the better entries in the series. If the unveiling of "T-H-E-M" isn't crazy enough for players, the episode wraps up with another exciting cliffhanger ending - big shocker. It's a to-be-continued conclusion that will leave you anxiously wondering exactly how the next episode will be pulled off. This one might be hard to top, but we can undoubtedly expect the quality zaniness will continue.
Video Game Generation
Hilarious as always, Sam & Max Episode 204: Chariots of the Dogs also benefits from the fact that it begins to pull everything together from the first three episodes of the season. As a result, it packs plenty of storyline to go along with its usual few hours of wackiness. While I wouldn’t recommend starting with this episode if you’re new to the series, this is the episode fans have been waiting for all season, and sets things up very well for a fantastic finale.
So, I apologize if my earlier kvetching put you off, but I had to put it out there. Telltale's tapped into the rhetoric of episodic gaming and made it real. Yes sirree, games really can be delivered, packaged, and enjoyed this way on a sustainable basis -- and it's hurting my brain like the mother of all temporal paradoxes.
Chariots of the Dogs is the highlight of the second season thanks to an excellent and interweaving storyline, which patches up several loose-ends and introducing a few new characters.
dd to this some of the wittiest writing yet, the decision not to include some of the more overplayed members of the cast and capped with a lesson on exactly how to make a cliff-hanger ending sell the final episode to the masses (but ignore the ease of the puzzles because I’m trying to end the review on a high) and you’ll see Telltale have all the ingredients to finish off the second season of Sam & Max on a real high.
To say that this is another excellent episode of Sam & Max would be to undersell just how good this game actually is. This is easily the best episode this season, and possibly even better than the best of last season, too. Next month's episode, What's New, Beelzebub, has a lot to live up to after this episode. Chariots of the Dogs may have a silly name, but it's easily one of the best two hours I have ever spent in front of a video game.
Armchair Empire, The
Chariots of the Dogs is impressive in its story’s complexity while still retaining a good amount of the trademark Sam & Max humor (although because of the intricacy of tying so many plots neatly together, Chariots of the Dogs isn’t quite as rib-tickling funny as most previous episodes). With a fresh “time capsule” look at previously visited locales along with the T-H-E-M spaceship, there’s an “everything old is new” feel, and the time elevator travel from each place is simply a brilliant new gameplay element. In the climatic setup episode, the Sam & Max series is hitting its full stride as the duo heads into the season’s hot-as-hell finale (in Sam & Max 205: What’s New Beelzebub?).
After the mediocre Episode 3, it's really nice to see the series get back on track. Chariot of the Dogs may be missing the satirical edge of earlier Sam & Max episodes, but the funny certainly won't disappoint long-time fans of the Freelance Police. Chariot of the Dogs can be purchased and downloaded for $8.95 (the game is free with a Gametap subscription), but at this point the entire five-episode Season Two package that's available for $34.95 is almost certainly the better value.
That the quality of Chariot of the Dogs is so high makes it a tough act to follow for the season finale, “What’s New, Beelzebub?”, but that certainly shouldn’t put anyone off of purchasing this superb addition to the increasingly accomplished franchise. Anyone who’s purchased the entire season early will be heaving a sigh of relief by now, as the episodes have gone from fairly decent all the way through to this one, which almost feels like a proper shrunken adventure (if that makes any sense whatsoever). In fact the only thing keeping this from a coveted 9.0 is a typo we spotted in the subtitles, so there’s always room for improvement – rest assured that we’ll be letting you know how it all ends very soon.

Chariots of the Dogs is another strong showing in the witty and wacky world of Sam and Max. The script is very strong and the sense of humor has lost none of the edge over the years. The time travelling aspect is hilarious and brings a new dimension (no pun intended) to the series. Fantastic voice acting, cute and sharp graphic design as well as some of the best storytelling in the modern PC world, make this a no-miss PC bargain ($8.95 online).

Must-have voor Adventure-fans!
This chapter is the best so far of Episode Two. It does a great job of bridging the gap between the first several episodes, and the subsequent second half. The setup is wonderful, and hopefully the next chapter will grab the ball and run with it, and not be a letdown.
Overall I have no regrets about my time with Sam and Max and am looking forward to the Season Finale next month. I just hope the writers can keep dishing up what I, and I suspect others, have come to expect from their wit. It’s a rough job…but that’s why they make the big bucks, right?
Chariots of the Dogs is definitely my favorite episode this season, and one of the strongest episodes of the entire series. The way that the designers have taken advantage of the time-traveling aspect to showcase the wacky and chaotic nature of the characters is just inspired. Great writing, great animation and great voice acting support it all the way through. The puzzles aren't just peripheral, throwaway problems designed only to extend the length of the game but are actually legitimate, meaningful parts of the story that provide a nice challenge that never distracts you from why you're trying to solve them. And T-H-E-Y are hilarious.
The value of Season 2 of Sam and Max grows every month, and with the addition of Chariots of the Dogs this season has finally tipped the scales and is a worth purchase for any fan of slap-stick humor adventure games. While is probably not the episode that anyone should use to introduce a new coming to the series with it is a love note to all of the fans out there that have been playing the series month to month and holding their breath after each season ends. While this is the game that every Sam and Max fan has wanted for some time now it raises the bar for next month’s game as well. This season has finally tipped the scales into a must buy for anyone, regardless if you get it through Gametap or Telltale directly.

More importantly, it gives this episode some very unique puzzles to solve. Since you’ll be doing a lot of Back to the Future style time hopping, you’ll need to figure out the ramifications your actions in one time will have on another. Honestly, this is one of the best, funniest episodes of the series thus far with some fantastic writing and creative situations.
Overall, episode 204 continues the Sam and Max standard. It brings nothing new to the table, apart from the use of a time machine to travel between destinations, but why fix something that isn’t broken. Puzzles are on the simpler side, but as mentioned this is certainly helpful for the newer adventure gamers.
Adventure Classic Gaming
Once again, Sam & Max Episode 204: Chariots of the Dogs ends with a nail biting cliffhanger, with no clue to what may happen in the season finale. Moreover, this season does not seem to follow the pattern from last season, with Sam and Max inching closer and closer to a mystery villain who they will confront in the end. Ultimately, we will just have to wait to see what Telltale Games has been planning. Will the last episode neatly tie up all seemingly unrelated past episodes of the season, or will it be just another standalone? Either way, I am sure that the last episode will be a blast, quite literally—or not.
Now, I really don't like criticising this series. It's fantastically funny and delivers episodic gaming on a regular schedule for a reasonable price, and that's something I can't praise enough. It's so cheap, and so funny, that criticism can feel like nitpicking, but if I'm underwhelmed then I'm underwhelmed. With Night of the Raving Dead the jokes were starting to take precedence over the gameplay, and that's only deepened with Chariots of the Dogs. It's so easy that at times it felt more like an interactive cut-scene than an adventure game for grown-ups. I'm all for games that want you to reach the end, and encourage you to stay on board for the whole ride, but, assuming that the vast majority of people following the series are experienced point-and-click players, this is starting to feel patronising. When the actual core gameplay becomes an undemanding routine, that's a dangerous position for an episodic series which needs to keep players playing.
