Sanitarium has already found a hallowed spot on my top shelf. Though I think the experienced gamer may find it a little easy and beatable in less than 20 hours, it is an excellent game for beginners, horror fans and anyone who just wants to play a solid, well-written adventure game. The negatives in this game--some of the voice acting, long restore times--are overshadowed by the many positives--the eerie atmosphere, the uncertainly of knowing what will occur next and the mature plot development. Let's hope Dreamforge has more games like Sanitarium on the drawing board. So turn out the lights and get ready to play the scariest, creepiest computer game you have ever loaded on your hard drive.

Sanitarium is a wonderfully creepy, psychological thriller/mystery of a game where the sole purpose is to discover who you are, why you're in the asylum, who's done this to you and how to get out. I found the story worthy of an Outer Limits episode with all of the twists and turns that one would expect in such a story. The reverse mouse movement notwithstanding, Sanitarium rates the FFC gold star from me!

Innymi słowy mimo kiepskiego interfejsu, niedociągnięć graficznych i braku spolszczenia, ta gra to już klasyka gatunku i pozycja obowiązkowa na półce każdego przygodówkowicza. Naprawdę warto postarać się o jej zdobycie, mimo że będzie to wymagało od Was trochę więcej wysiłku niż wyprawa do najbliższego Empiku ;-). Zbliżają się Święta, może więc warto napisać list do Świętego Mikołaja :-). Tym bardziej, że gra nie ma wygórowanych wymagań sprzętowych. Wystarczy Wam Pentium 300 MHz i 64 MB Ram, żeby w pełni cieszyć się rozgrywką.

These minor flaws are all but insignificant, however, considering the scope of what Sanitarium accomplishes. Stephen King once said that he recognizes terror as the finest emotion, but if he can't get it, he'll go for horror or the gross-out. Sanitarium never lowers itself to a gross-out for a gross-out's sake; everything here works in service to the overall effect. Even the stand-alone puzzles have been so shrewdly integrated into the whole that you may not realize they're really standing alone. Sanitarium deserves what may be the highest compliment any work of horror can merit. Make sure you play it - but don't make the same mistake I did. Don't play it alone.

Getting scared has become one of the great thrills in modern entertainment and probably produces the most intense and overwhelming feelings within us. When these qualities are brought by a computer game I have always dived at the chance to play it, so as soon as Sanitarium came along I couldn't wait to try it out. Sanitarium is an adventure game along the lines of dark games such as Beneath a Steel Sky and Dark Earth: it delves into the depths of human fear and sanity (or rather, insanity). While this may sound very ominous, it is also very compelling and if you are at all like myself you will be drawn to this game. So has the preamble intrigued you? If not, read on anyway.

Sanitarium is een geslaagde combinatie van mysterie met een aantal horrorachtige elementen. Klasse!

Le héros de l’histoire, Max, est amnésique. Il a été victime d’un accident de voiture, et au lieu de se réveiller dans un hôpital, il atterrit dans un asile psychiatrique. Il va dès lors évoluer dans un monde inquiétant, à mi-chemin entre la réalité et ses rêves et traumatismes d’enfant refoulés, ponctués de flashes relatant des événements importants de sa vie passée, ce qui ne va pas lui faciliter la tâche pour l’aider à reconstruire son identité. Le médecin-chef de l’asile, le Docteur Morgan, semble en tout cas beaucoup s’intéresser à son cas…

While Sanitarium does have its minor drawbacks, it is one of the best-executed adventure games on the market. The plot, described by some as being "sick-made", keeps the player involved until the end of the game. In the end, Sanitarium is one of the most weird, twisted sick games that you will ever play. Bravo.

Still, it's hard not to recommend this game. Through its deft juggling of mood and story, Sanitarium creates one of the most compelling, involving adventures to grace a hard drive in a long time. As long as you're not looking for a synapse-frying, brain-buster of a game, Sanitarium can't be beat.

A pesar de estar en inglés, Sanitarium es un juego que encantará a todos los aficionados al género por su historia y guión, y por sus increíbles gráficos y sonido.

In this creepy and ambiguous, yet captivating and immersing adventure, you play a man who must fight his own demons who are trying to pull him away from reality and into madness, all the while exploring his own journey of redemption. While the story may not begin in the most original fashion, how the story eventually unfolds is light years away from being a cliché such that it is anything but predictable.

Sanitarium is not an adventure game classic; moving the main character about can be a chore, and there are some throwaway arcade combat scenes that don't quite fit in with the rest of the game. However, it tells an intriguing tale, the graphics are very impressive, and decent point-and-click adventures are a bit thin on the ground these days. So this could be your last chance to get into a 'true' adventure in the conventional sense. Try it, you might like it.

On the computer, we go places that we normally spend our lives avoiding. So here I was, “entering” Sanitarium. After a dreamy flashback graphic you wake up as an amnesiac in a richly detailed scene. It was billed as an Adventure game with Action, the action being a couple of sequences where you can't die (but you can be forced to start the sequence again)! That leaves the rest of the game safe for exploration and experimentation.

Im Hexenkessel von Sanitarium brodeln alle typischen Zutaten von Gruselfilmen: Halloween-Kürbisse, eine Riesenkrake, der Zirkus des Grauens, ein Irrenhaus et cetera. Also boß eine seichte Klischee-Klamotte für Amerikaner, dachte ich - doch weit gefehlt. Einmal begonnen, zog mich die intelligente Story um den tragischen Helden mehr und mehr in ihren Bann und Stunden vergingen wie im Flug. Dank geschickt eingestreuter Filmschnipsel blieb die Spannung am Kochen und immer wieder setzte der berühmte "Nur noch zehn Minuten"-Effekt ein. Dann kam das jähe Ende: Viel zu schnell ist das Spiel vorbei. Für einen Hunderter sind zwei Tage Spaß zuwenig.

Sanitarium is one of the better adventure games released in recent years. The game's storyline is entertaining start to finish, beginning with a classic 'man with amnesia wakes up in an asylum' opening, and getting more and more strange as the game wears on. Across the game's nine acts (spread across three CD-ROMs), you'll slowly learn more about the circumstances of your amnesia and the strange world of madness into which you have descended, with bits of the plot being unveiled in dialogue and fragmentary flashbacks that are spaced out fairly well.

It’s sad to say, but the place that I have found the majority of my adventure games over the past few years is in the bargain/discount section of my local Wal-Mart. These 2am treks are usually good for a mediocre title or two that I missed the first time around at a cost of ten bucks or so. But every now and then I stumble across something good – or even great. On my most recent venture I stumbled on a true rarity – Sanitarium - and not to sound like an old-time musical, but sometimes dreams really do come true.

With a name like Sanitarium it's no surprise that this game has disturbing episodes in an insane asylum that are definitely not suitable for children. In keeping with this 'not suitable for children' theme it also has lavish servings of mutilated and malformed characters and oodles of bloody, mangled bodies. As I am usually unimpressed by such 'embellishments', both for their own sake and because they often signal that gameplay is lacking, it was surely a surprise that I quite enjoyed Sanitarium.

Die einzelnen Kapitel sind logische Bestandteile des gesamten Spielgeschehens: Jede erfolgreich abgeschlossene Etappe bringt Sie näher an des Rätsels Lösung. Nur schade, daß die altmodische Grafik nicht der unheimlichen Atmosphäre der Spielhandlung entspricht. Ich hätte mir zudem häufiger gewünscht, die Perspektive von Max einnehmen zu können. Demgegenüber weist Sanitarium ein paar originelle Spielideen auf: Beispielsweise watet Maxens Alter ego im vierten Kapitel durch hüfttiefes Wasser und bekämpft einen krakenähnlichen Freak mittels Feuerspucktechnik. Eine weniger betagte Umsetzung, und Sanitarium hätte ein echter Knaller werden können.

Aussterbende Arten behandelt man gerne etwas freundlicher. Adventures mit Point-and-click-Bedienung, Inventar und richtigen Rätseln sind so selten geworden, daß ich die schräge Zwangsjacken-Story mit gesteigerten Interesse installiert habe. Leider kommen in der Alptraum-Spielwelt die klassischen, Objekt-orientierten Puzzles etwas zu kurz. Die meiste Zeit verbringt man mit Gequatsche, Storyhäppchen zusammentragen und Herumgelaufe.

Gerenderte isometrische Locations und häufig eingestreute Cutscenes schaffen eine beklemmende Atmosphäre. Leider verhindern das hakelige Maus-Interface und die Dialoglastigkeit das Aufkommen von echter Spannung.
