Scorcher

As the dream that was Scavenger collapses under its self-generated expectations, Scorcher is released. For a futuristic motorbike racing game it would be unfair to expect anything original, but within the tight constraints of the racing genre, Scavenger’s internal Zyrinx development team has created one of the most enjoyable yet simple titles for quite some time.

Auch ohne Unterstützung von 3D-Karten hinterläßt die Grafik einen positiven Eindruck. Hat man sich an die sensible Steuerung gewöhnt, so lassen sich auch ganz passable Rundenzeiten erzielen. Trotzdem hat Scorcher nichts, was andere Spiele nicht auch bieten. Hinzu kommt die magere Ausstattung ohne Multiplayer-Modus, mit nur sechs Strecken und ohne die Option sein Fahrzeug aufzurüsten.

Konkurrenzspiele bieten erheblich mehr - beispielsweise verschiedene Fahrzeugmodelle oder Aufrüstung der eigenen Karre. Da setze ich mich doch lieber auf meine getunte Vespa Special und pese kurz vor Ladenschluß durch die Münchner Innenstadt - das ist aufregender.

Ah, that old crowd favorite, the racing game. The challenge of beating another driver while navigating an exciting environment. One of the original, and most pure, forms of gaming. Scorcher is a racing game; however, it manages to get wrong all that is good about racing. True, it's damn nice to look at, but it's more about beating a timer and showing off a fast 3D engine than competing against other drivers. A wannabe WipeOut, from the futuristic landscapes to the techno soundtrack, it's derailed by poor controls, bad design decisions and incredible difficulty.
