Sea Dogs is indeed an epic adventure at sea. With minor bugs that were/will be fixed in patches, Sea Dogs offers the aspiring pirate a chance at pretty realistic battle. And it's fun as well. If you have ever felt salt in your veins or a passion for sea adventures, Sea Dogs is your game.

Just Adventure
This is definitely not a "strategy lite" game, and so could be intimidating to adventure players not familiar with that genre. That caveat aside, I can recommend Sea Dogs to players interested in seeing yet another happy example of the new breed of genre-busting games.

So, before I go on my lunch break, I'd just like to wrap this sucker up with some everlasting words of wisdom. Liked Pirates? Buy Sea Dogs and make your girlfriend jealous! Or homicidal, depending on her personality. I mean, if you do get hooked just don't let her near your little thing with a pair of tweezers, that's all. Sea Dogs is addictive as hell, it's perfectly balanced (just like Pirates was), and it adds more than just flashy graphics. Take it from an old Pirates fan.

Sea Dogs does for sailing games what Command Aces of the Deep did for U-boat sims; gives you all the pirate and sailing action you can handle and clearly sets the mark for any sailing sims that follow. It manages to strike a good balance with its mix of sim/RPG/strategy game. Sea Dogs' variety of quests and non-linear campaign offers addicting repeat play with a breadth of activities not found in any other sim. Sea Dogs is better than buried treasure.

The real addictive quality of the game comes from picking up bigger, badder ships and enhancing your skills to the point where you can start kicking even more butt and completing the more difficult quests. There are some who may not be able to get past some of the weaker aspects of the game such as boarding or the town environments, but this is currently my favorite game.

The total package is a lot of fun, and hell, you get to be a pirate. That's worth several bonus cool points right there! If you like a good RPG, if you've ever thought it would be pretty cool to be a swashbuckling pirate captain, or if you're just looking for something a little different, then this is the game for you. It's for all the RPG fans who've been looking for a change of scenery from sword and sorcery, and some of those who haven't. Slap on your eye patch, break out the stuffed parrot, and take Sea Dogs for a sail around the islands. Blast your enemies' ships into splinters and then tilt one back with you mateys. Yo-ho-ho-ho, a pirate's life for me!

Pirates! is arguably one of the greatest PC games of all time. In an age where most programmers would've been happy outdoing Seven Cities of Gold, Sid Meier's masterpiece was simulating swordfights, naval battles, economics, and practically every other aspect of the swashbuckler's lifestyle. As successful as the title was though, few attempts at recapturing its former glory have been made. Sure, we've had Cutthroats recently, but it failed to capture that classic spirit. So when Bethesda Softworks, known mainly these days for its Elder Scrolls series, announced they'd be making a buccaneer RPG, people sat up and took notice. While it's undeniably true that Sea Dogs, the publisher's latest, paints a killer new spin on a stagnant niche. However, the product's a bit too beefy for its own good. In this particular case, all the statistics and hot keys in the world won't convince a gamer that bigger necessarily equals better.

Early in its development, SEA DOGS was going to include fantasy elements such as spells and sea monsters. While giant squids and other creatures from pirate lore could have been welcome additions, it was a good design decision to exclude fireball-hurling wizards; the more realistic setting is one of the games strengths. There are other venues for dueling sorcerers, but almost none for cannon-wielding corsairs. While its plot and RPG elements lack depth, SEA DOGS does a great job depicting 17th-century naval combat in a stylish manner. For that, we hoist Our grog in salute.

This sparseness is really the problem with Sea Dogs in general. It all works, but you'll wish that everything about it were a little deeper and a little more polished. The basic groundwork is enough to keep the game interesting, but it's hard not to imagine what the game would have been like had the developers made the commerce model a little more advanced and the role-playing elements a little stronger. It's easy to find fault with Sea Dogs, but it's just as easy to accept these faults and lose yourself in the game. And once you do, the number of ways to play and things to do will keep you coming back for awhile.

Should you buy it? If you like genre-benders, sure. If you like naval combat games, definitely. If you get bored easily or don't care for the setting, save your money. Sea Dogs has no multiplayer mode, and it just won't have much for you. But if you like open-ended games with scores of possibilities, this may be your game.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Despite its flaws, Sea Dogs is the best game of its type since Pirates!. With superb graphics and music, and multifaceted non-linear gameplay, the title offers a lot to a variety of gamers. Unfortunately, some of its potential was squandered by what I can only assume was a rush to get the product on the shelves in time for Christmas, as the bugs are annoying and the absence of multiplayer competition is a real limitation. Even without these problems, you need to be willing to really immerse yourself in the tiniest details of sea life to get the most out of this title and to have any serious chance at success. If you are willing to dive in with full perseverance and enthusiasm, then despite the stormy voyage, you will not be disappointed by the treasure you unearth.

All Game Guide
Despite problems and frustrating and tedious moments, the game is still recommended because it's fun to play and offers a unique gaming experience. If you're looking for a pirate action-adventure-RPG loaded with combat, excellent graphics and dozens of quests, you could do a lot worse than Sea Dogs.

Sea Dogs is, without question, a wildly fun experience... when it works as intended. There's a lot of gameplay here and you can spend dozens of hours questing in the Archipelago. If it had only spent a few more weeks in the dockyard before setting sail, it would be much easier to recommend without hesitation, but it's impossible to overlook the bugs and the other baggage that the game brings to the table.
