Still, Shadowbane has jolted much-needed new life into the massively multiplayer genre—a genre that was showing every sign of being drowned in a flood of derivative games. It’s a brave attempt at something new, and it succeeds. Play to crush it you want, but you’ll get more satisfaction from playing to create an empire.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS YOU can aspire to greatness: develop a character, join a guild and use your skills to help build a virtual empire… or destroy one. Shadowbane is Wolfpack Studios' ambitious and long-awaited offering for those in the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) community who are seeking the total package… but does it deliver? Read on to find out!

If you only play Shadowbane for two or three weeks, you'll miss out on much of what the game has to offer, and it may seem as if the game is barely more than hack-and-slash. But if the idea of politics, sieges and large-scale warfare in your MMORPG appeal to you, and you're willing to wait out the stability and lag issues, Shadowbane may be just the game you're looking for.
GameSpot (Apr 11, 2003)
It's true that Shadowbane's design has a few questionable aspects, and that figuring out how to use the game's interface can be a chore. There's also no denying that Shadowbane is going through some growing pains, and that it has yet to prove whether the town sieges will be any fun. But there's no denying that when you find a good group and you're fighting, chatting, and gaining levels, Shadowbane is at least as good as EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot. And though at first you may ask yourself if you really need another game that plays, for the most part, like both of those games, you may eventually be so busy fighting that you'll forget the question.
IGN (May 05, 2003)
Overall Shadowbane is a decent game. It’s not great by any means, but it does provide one of the most satisfactory Player vs. Player experiences of any current online world. The fast leveling is great to get right to the action, but without skill respecs it means you will be erasing and remaking the same character multiple times if you want to be at peak efficiency. Most casual players will never experience how in-depth the city creation and guild system is, so it removes a large part of the game for them. Shadowbane is a good game for “hardcore” MMORPG fans. Unfortunately, this is not the game for someone who is new to online worlds or for anyone who detests Player vs. Player combat.

It’s a difficult proposition to release a medieval-themed massively multiplayer RPG these days – a difficult proposition at best. If you’re a developer, you have to think to yourself, "Okay, what hasn’t been done?" That question alone could fry your brain, but striking the perfect balance between including things which have worked in other games, and making your title seem fresh and new has to be daunting to say the least. The Shadowbane team has attacked this problem with control in mind; as in, players control the world. If you want to start your own guild, town, business, whatever; you’re able to do it. There’s a lot of appeal in being able to effectively shape your playing environment, but the nuts and bolts of actual gameplay come up short for this release.
