Like the original Civ, this enhanced version lets aspiring despots rule a kingdom of their own, starting in 4000 b.c. and working up to the modern era. Along the way you build new cities (in my case, Benburg and Benadelphia) and battle such historical figures as Catherine the Great and Mao Zedong. The cheat switch isn't the only cool new feature; Civ 2 offers graphics, live-action film clips, and an arsenal of advanced weapons. Today Benburg, tomorrow the world.

This is one of the best games ever made in my opinion. Better not give more away… but I’ll tell you.. It's much more fun when played against a human. Now go and get your own opinion!

While those looking for a revolutionary new game may not be entirely satisfied, any serious gamer who can even imagine enjoying this game probably will. While Microprose did not build an entirely new beast with this game, I feel that they kept the best of the original and changed weaker points in regards to user input. If you find yourself still playing Civilization every once in a while, or even if you want to, get this game. It may not be perfect, but it's pretty darn good. In fact, if this were an original release (not a sequel), I think it would be given immediate enshrinement. It's a great game, and I give it a 94. It could be a little better, but I'm so busy looking at the things I like that it's hard to remember the things I don't. If only the Civ II Net Pack is a patch and not an entirely separate product, I'll be in heaven. And if I do hear that nasty Cyberdemon calling again, there's always the Aegis cruiser ...

After the disappointing example set by X-COM 2, many gamers expected Civilization II to be nothing more than Sid Meier's original game with a few new graphics tacked on. Others were worried that the game's designers would stray too far from the path, and would ruin the spectacular play balance that made Civilization such a hit. In the end, the design team at Microprose managed to add a score of new play elements that help the aging strategy classic evolve - without sacrificing the game's addictive qualities.

Civilization 2 is awesome and addicting in everyway, it’s also only the second game for Windows 95 that was worth playing at all (the other being Ultima Online). If you loved the original, then set aside a few weeks to play out one of the large games on a high level. Civilization 2 is definitely one of the best games of the year!

There aren't too many games that offer such a wide variety of confrontations, especially those such as this, without any multiplayer options tagged on the side. Turn-based strategy has rarely been so well-handled. Even the graphics retain their original charm, and the atmosphere, guided by a suitably tribal soundtrack, still manages to cloud you in an epic battle for survival.

If there was a title that could best represent each genre of game category, I would choose "Civilization" for strategy. Although several games based on the same concept were released since its creation, "Civilization" is still considered by many as a classic that has never been threatened by another title. However, what was a success some years ago might not appeal for the masses nowadays, and MicroProse had to come up with a sequel that would not only change the old-fashion style graphics, but would also feature what the five years between the release of the two titles brought to the gaming industry.
