There isn’t enough space to go into every detail, but it should be noted that it was difficult to write this review, because each time I started the game just to check on some detail, six hours mysteriously vanished. What more do you need to hear? If you have even the slightest interest in strategy games—and I can’t imagine why you’re reading this if you don’t—run, don’t walk, to get a copy of Civ III.

In a game this complex, those are nits indeed. Besides, living up to expectations is never easy, and for once someone has done it and I’m not going to gripe. This is what we expect from heroes, and here we have it. Far be it from me to come off as a curmudgeon, complaining in any way, shape or form about this gift from Sid Meier. Here’s a guy so sure of his abilities that he lent his own face to the science advisor. You have to admire someone who lets his features get morphed into painful contortions. There is no other score possible. This, right now, is as good as it gets.

To conclude then, whilst Civ III may be something of a daunting prospect initially; it is however a hugely involving and vastly immersive game, that deserves a chance. I’m concerned it may be rather too slow for the action-orientated preference of modern gamers, however Civ III offers a far deeper experience than most real-time strategy titles. Epic, immersive, clever, addictive and ultimately brilliant.

In fact, the entire game is just that, subtle and clever. Yes, there is still a bit of late game tedium, and the graphics won't knock your socks off, but graphics aren't what Civilization III is all about. The game, like its predecessors, is about addiction. Unfortunately, it does a great job of it. Now, if I could just get some sleep!

I'll forego the basic introduction. You know the one -- where I talk all about how the original Civilization and its eventual sequel, Civilization II, have occupied more of my gaming hours than any other game. There's enough of that stuff in the preview. Still, since it would be unfair to assume that everyone who's reading this is intimately familiar with the game, we probably should at least outline the point of it all.

After several years of waiting and playing poor Civilization clones, we finally have a sequel to the series worthy of Sid Meier's name. Civilization III is, simply put, a fantastic game which preserved all the good qualities of its predecessors and introduced many innovative features. Once you install the game, you can expect to have many a sleepless night before you finally win and dominate your opponents.

Bravissimo!

With Firaxis' superlative Civilization III, that old-school, up-till-5am-addictive, and one-more-turn-based grand-strategy gaming that was introduced 10 years ago in the original Civilization is back. And it's back with a vengeance. This sequel to one of the greatest games ever, which was itself the sequel to one of the greatest games ever, lives up to its lineage. It is a paean to the principles of solid design, sleek interface, sharp artwork, unlimited replayability, open architecture, and epic storytelling. It is yet another example of Sid Meier and company's cunning insight into what makes games good. Civilization III is, in short, a triumphant proclamation that strategy gaming is alive and well and still able to keep you rooted in front of your computer for hours at a time.

Eräs seikka on kuitenkin ärsyttävyydessään yli kaiken.

Civilization is obviously meant for those with an attention span able to grasp things deeper than MTV's late night programming, but it's getting to the point where a flight simulator would be easier to master. Because of its technical achievements and foundation it’s built upon, I'll give Civilization III a good score, but just understand that this rating is prefaced with a learning curve warning.

As much as I wanted to see some reasonable AI strategy, he just couldn’t pull it off. All they needed to do was conquer the city and place one unit at the only square on that island besides the city square and no enemy civilization would’ve be able to unload troops on that island for a long, long time. But hey, I guess that was too much to ask.

This Civilization offering is a release finally worthy of the fans who have been waiting patiently for it. If you’ve been anxious to see if you’re in for another disappointment before spending your cash, rest assured your keyboard is safe when you put this one through its paces.

If you’re a fan of the series or of the genre, then I can readily recommend picking up Civilization III — just keep in mind that it may not be all you expected, especially later in the game. For those looking to take their first steps into turn-based strategy, Civilization III is an excellent place to start. It will allow new players to start off easy, and grow into the challenges that will be thrown at them. Despite the problems I found within Civilization III and the fact that the Modern Era feels unfinished, the possibilities for expansion seem nearly unlimited. Once Firaxis implements multiplayer, there won’t be any reason to avoid this game, which again proves itself to be both fun and addictive to play.

I had a lukewarm reaction to Civilization 3 the first time I played it. In many ways there are things in Alpha Centauri and Call to Power that are simply done better than in Civilization 3. This is not to say that Civilization 3 is a bad game, but I just feel it could have done more to try and innovate a genre it helped create. The biggest game play changes (culture and corruption), decreased micromanagement, and a lot of minor tweaks make Civilization 3 a must buy for strategy gaming fans. Civilization 3 seems to be more of an upgrade to Civilization 2 than it was to Civilization, but many of the "new" features we've played in other titles that came out before Civilization 3. So a couple of innovations and some borrowing from other titles make Civilization 3 an enjoyable experience that is an incremental instead of a revolutionary gaming experience.

Sid Meier's Civilization III is a great new addition to a franchise that has long been regarded as one of the best around. Building on the foundation of Civilization I, Civilization II, and Alpha Centurai (a similar game from the same developer), this game also incorporates completely new concepts into the gameplay. Veterans of previous incarnations will dive right in and quickly adjust to the changes. Those who are new to the series may have a tough time, but ample in-game help and tutorials, plus a thorough manual, are enough to get you through any troubles. All in all, Civilization III shows that this series has indeed passed the test of time, and is still going strong.

I’m not going to explain what kind of game Civilization is. If you don’t know it, all I can say is : ‘Welcome to the planet Earth’. I’m also not going to praise all the wonderful new features that Firaxis put in the game. You can read about those on the Civilization Website or on the countless reviews that worship Civ 3. I’m going to look at the flaws, the backside of the medal.

I am not a child of the Civilization franchise. I never really worshipped at the feet of Sid Meier, and I played Alpha Centauri before I ever played Civ II. Why would I review Civilization III, then? Well, I caught the Civilization fever from playing Call to Power (for which can't use "Civilization" in its title any more, thanks to the lawyers), and I liked the idea of the game. Plus, I'm surrounded at all times by Civ addicts. What I can give you in this review, then, is the view of someone coming to Civ III on its own merits, not indoctrinated by years of Civ II. For what it's worth, I enjoy the game very much, but I definitely have a few bones to pick.
