Sid Meier's Pirates! was named "Arcade Classic of the Year" for 2004 in the March 2005 issue of Computer Gaming World. According the editors, the game was "so unique and so damn good that we actually need to create a new category for it."

Some sound-effects/video was re-used from previous Civilization games in Sid Meier's Pirates! One example includes when your character swings on a rope aboard a ship. The yell he makes is actually the yell an Archer makes in Civ 3 when he gets promoted. Another example is one of the ballroom dancing pieces that's played. It happens to also be a track used in Civilization III: Conquests.
