SimCity Societies is a very nice game. It is about building and growing and personal achievement. It does not have strong quest-oriented goals, per se, but does challenge players to create and plan. Hours can be quickly lost in this world and that speaks highly of the product.

SimCity Societies is ultimately a step down from its predecessors, but it doesn't fall so far to be considered a blunder. You may not sink as much time into this installment, but the reinvention of the gameplay mechanics results in an inventive array of new problems to solve.

Societies is a nice change and its concepts are well implemented, but for a fan of the franchise, it seems more like a spin off rather than a sequel. It’ll keep you entertained for hours (if the gameplay clicks with your gaming profile) otherwise you’re most likely going to load up SimCity 2000 again. It’s a competent game and most of all has a large degree of fun factor. It’s worth a try, but most likely a game for those long summer months when the market is sparse.

And speaking of smooth, Societies isn't. When you reach the 10,000-population mark, you can expect the game to crawl (I routinely witnessed sub-30 frames per second on a machine I built to rock Crysis). In a game where constant zooming, map rotation, and precise building placement are key, laggy performance is more than a mere annoyance.

Graafisesti peli on ihan kiva, keskiverrot koneet kaupunkien kasvaessa täysin kyykyttävä esitys.

Without the core gameplay there, this follow-up feels more like a knock-off than the real deal. As a city building simulator it shines, but as a game it lags well behind the series' standards.

Was bleibt also?

Unfortunately, even this enjoyable aspect is simplified to the point where you could easily grow tired of your city within a few hours regardless of what path you take. Societies is interesting enough if you're just looking for a casual bit of click and drag, but if you're looking for the sense of depth and complexity that made the previous SimCity titles so memorable, you might find yourself disappointed.

Game Chronicles
SimCity Societies isn’t really a SimCity game, but it can be entertaining nonetheless, provided that it gets patched up in the near future so that it doesn’t crash every few minutes. If you like the idea of building up a city and watching it grow into a particular societal culture – and even more so if you don’t care for the strategy aspects of past SimCity games – this may be a title you’d like to give a try.

Quite simply, the game is too easy. Other than balancing society energies and chasing a few meager trophies, you won't find much to entertain you here. The game is far from an "ultimate building block tool kit." SimCity has gone from a complex game to a toned down and largely underwhelming city builder with very little to hold your attention.

Ultimately, you won't worry about much of anything and that's probably the worst part about the game. The developers delivered an attractive game with a lot of new additions, but sadly, they left out a lot of the complexity that made the early games in this franchise so enjoyable. And though a majority of the changes to the game were made to appeal to a wider market of gamers probably hurt more than helped - fans of The Sims won't have enough to do with their Sims and city-builders like myself won't have enough to do with their cities. SimCity Societies is a weakest entry in the storied SimCity franchise. If you were interested in building a city, pick up a copy of SimCity 4. If you wanted to play with Sims, get The Sims 2 and the 18 expansions for it. If you were hoping for both in one game, you're going to have to keep waiting.

When it comes down to it SimCity: Societies starts out strong with a high fun factor but stumbles down the stretch due to poorly balanced mechanics. It’s about as fun as chewing gum: a burst of flavor followed by lots of mindless chewing. Still, there’s something about it that will keep you chewing for a while.

Sim City Societies is a novel game with a unique new mechanic for building towns and cities with personality. Casual players will find a lot to tinker with as they sculpt towns out of their dreams or nightmares. More serious gamers will be able to plumb the depth of the title over the course of the weekend, so your enjoyment of the game depends a great deal on what you're looking for when you pick up the box.

There are a bunch of maps to choose from, and you can create random ones as well. So if just want to sit back and build a city on your own terms, you'll find a lot of ways to do it. But without any real challenge, the welcome wears out quickly. Unlike most city builders, there's nothing to keep you engaged, and SimCity Societies falls flat as a result.

IGN
Though it can't be faulted for not being a SimCity game (except to the extent that EA irresponsibly branded it as such), SimCity Societies has enough faults of its own that we're not going to run short of things to criticize. While the concept is sound, the game mechanics are too arbitrary and confusing for players looking for the next great city building game.

This is not SimCity. This is a cheap knock-off with The Sims UI and concepts transplanted to a city building "game" that isn't much of a game. Takes the whole concept of "casual" to the extreme while rushing for the Christmas market. End result is a rushed and buggy software toy.

TotalVideoGames (TVG)
The sound effects are repetitive and irritating, the camera feels slightly restrictive, the graphics are significantly below par, there's very little content and the gameplay is tedious. If you want to witness the death of a great computer game series, buy SimCity Societies. Otherwise, stay away.

Eurogamer.net (UK)
Societies doesn't stumble just because "it isn't SimCity". Fresh takes on old concepts should always be welcome. It stumbles because it's a generally unsatisfying patchwork of a game, dragged down by inconsistent gameplay, outdated design and weirdly implemented ideas.

I feel there are people who will enjoy this game in the Sandbox mode - unlimited money, everything unlocked. You can place what you want and not worry about making the game work via illogical mechanics. For that reason, I have given the game a better score than I might have. However, from a gaming perspective it is a disappointing offering and a wasted opportunity. It is almost as if halfway through development, the designers realised they couldn't really make a fully-fledged game that would work correctly around this concept and gave up. It is just SimCity Lite, and really provides no new challenge or choices. Of course, I did still enjoy raining a meteor shower on my metropolis - probably a little too much, thanks to the frustration I had built up while playing.
