The Sims: Vacation is rated T for Teens. Parents of younger teens should be aware that there are suggestive themes and items in this expansion...particularly the hot tubs, igloos and tents.

Anyone desiring what is being promised in Sims 2 or Sims Online may be a little disappointed with SV. But those who treasured what they received out of the Hot Date expansion will totally enjoy SV. Like the Go-Go's, a little vacation may be all your Sims ever wanted, but let's hope that Maxis development team isn't out of the office until they give us one of the two highly-anticipated Sims titles.

In the end though, critics of the series will persist to savagely assault Vacation for introducing nothing solidly new. It has been two years, like I mentioned before. While there's no new technical advancement and no significantly new discoveries with The Sims, the social aspect of this game remains, de facto, at the top of all gaming genres. I'm tempted to paraphrase one of my literary mentors.

I must admit that The Sims: Vacation isn't so revolutionary as The Sims : Hot Date, but it's brings again pretty cool gameplay and plenty of fun. If you are The Sims fan, it's another expansion just for you.

Let's make believe that the Sims franchise is actually crack cocaine. Since crack is an incredibly addictive substance, any new version of said material being released will likely elicit the following reaction among its adherents: "Oh my God! A new version of crack is out! Maybe I can buy some new furniture!" Well my cracked-out little friends, this is true. Yes, you can buy new furniture. Yes, you can call a cab from your house and go on a vacation with your family. Yes, you can play assorted carnival games and so on and so fourth. The only thing really holding this game back is the time passage rate. Like I've said all along; if things went a bit slower, the game would be much more engrossing.

But fixing the original game has apparently never been the point of any of The Sims' expansion packs. Livin' Large, House Party, and Hot Date have all simply built upon what was in The Sims and added new features and options to play with. You could say that Vacation actually builds upon previous expansions--its new customizable resort areas are a lot like Hot Date's downtown, and its new family activities are a lot like House Party's party games. You don't really have to analyze things that closely, because in the end, Vacation does what a good expansion for The Sims is supposed to do--breathe new life into the original game. If you play and enjoy The Sims, you'll play and enjoy Vacation--and you'll just enjoy it more if you happen to have Hot Date and House Party.

I suppose this review has been rather longer than most people can be bothered to read, so if you made it this far, good for you. I guess the bottom line is this -- everything I loved and appreciated about Hot Date I love and appreciate in Vacation. I love being able to have Sims leave the house, go somewhere else, meet new people, buy new things, and have new things to do. But by the same token, the things that annoyed me about Hot Date -- fixed behavior and appearances for the worker NPCs, no death or danger or passing out, limited access to your object collection in build mode -- annoys the heck out of me here too.

Overall, Vacation is a good, if buggy, addition to the Sims line. Plenty of new objects provide enough variety to make it worth the price, but the lack of effort on Maxis' part to fix the problems in the game is disappointing.

The Sims Vacation is an alternate way for Sims to have fun. It's not a big departure from the original gameplay basics. There's enough new to keep fans interested. But those on a budget don't need to pack their bags.
