SpaceChem doesn’t seem to have a lot going for it. It’s a simple-looking 2D game about programming machines to build molecules. Yet, under this unassuming surface lies a game of such seething excitement that it’ll have you shouting and yelling more than when you play an FPS. I myself spoke such dark utterances that Khorne himself shivered. How can a science-themed puzzle game go so right?
Calm Down Tom (Mar 18, 2011)
SpaceChem is a fun addictive puzzle game that will suck up hours of your life and leave you wanting more. It exercises the grey matter and you will find yourself staring at a mess of paths and instructions unsure of what exactly will happen when you start the reactor. The feeling of joy is quite overwhelming when your carefully thought out plan actually works.

Scientists recently rejiggered a helium atom to behave like hydrogen. I have only a basic understanding of how that works, but damn if it doesn't sound pretty cool. It makes me wonder if the experience of building an elaborate atomic reactor in SpaceChem is a taste of what it was like to conduct that experiment. Sure, SpaceChem is just pseudo-science, but it does capture that mystique of toying with nature's fundamental ingredients. And while nuclear chemists are serious professionals, I'm willing to bet that the first time that one of them transformed a smidgen of helium into super-heavy hydrogen, part of him wanted to cry, "Look what I made!"

Despite the way it looks in screenshots and despite the dry-sounding premise, SpaceChem is one of the finest, most smartly-crafted and most intrinsically beautiful puzzle games I've played in years. It channels Rube Goldberg-'em-up The Incredible Machine, both in its desire to create something simple, elegant and precise and in the joy of simply watching your held-together-with-metaphorical-duct-tape solution work. You really should experience that joy for yourself.

Unless you’ve won a Nobel prize, you’re going to hit a challenge that’s too much for you. The good news is that won’t be before you’ve more than got your money’s worth out of SpaceChem. The bad news is that you’re never going to find out what happens at the end of the really quite-good story, which unfolds in the form of between-level narrative vignettes. But in the state your brain will be by then, I doubt you’d be able to comprehend anything beyond monosyllabic commands anyway.

The tutorial does a good job introducing increasing complexity to the gameplay, and the latter puzzles in the campaign offer a high amount of challenge. I would like the ability to create your own puzzle requirements; allowing the community to further expand the game would only be good for the life of the product. The interface does a good job streamlining the design process, and the game incorporates multiple tiers as you connect separate process to work in concert, expanding the design possibilities of your systems. SpaceChem is also available for all three computer gaming platforms and your high scores are compared against others online (you can even upload videos of your best ideas to YouTube from inside the game). In short (too late!), SpaceChem is a fantastic puzzle game great for any fan of the genre.

If you had told me a week ago that I’d be completely and utterly addicted to a game where the player does little more than push chemical elements around from one place to another, I really, really, really wouldn't have believed you. Alright, so SpaceChem, from Zachtronics Industries, is a bit more intricate than that – it’s set in space, for one thing, and has a very cool background story that unfolds about the life of a first-time, space-exploring chemical engineer; but all of this, while enjoyable, is really only window dressing to the core game experience. If you are persistent and curious, you will download the demo, or pick up the full game for a mere $20 US.

This requirement means you’ll have to look beyond atom combinations and also consider the path of your waldos to avoid collisions and time their movements. To put even more pressure on you at the completion of each level you’ll see a comparison of your performance against others to see how you compare against other chemical engineers.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun (Jan 10, 2011)
In short, my initial impressions were right. This is an incredible game, and it absolutely has a place in the PC’s growing catalogue of glorious indie puzzlers. Alongside the shimmering, yet evasive brilliance of Braid, or the charming wit of World of Goo, we now have a straight-up genius. There’s no other word for it- like all geniuses, it can be demanding and even problematic, but there’s no questioning what Zachtronics has achieved here. This is top-of-the-line entertainment. If you’re a puzzle game fan, buy SpaceChem immediately. Everybody else should place $20 under a rock or something and download the demo, so that you will have $20 should you realise that you need the full version. I am telling you to place your money under a rock for this game.
