Very few games lead me to my gaming nirvana: "Suspension of Disbelief." SpellForce enlisted my involvement and playing dedication with the incredible opening cinematic, the brilliant tutorial and, ultimately, the absolutely captivating game adventure itself. Adventure and RPG enthusiasts are encouraged not to be apprehensive about the RTS aspects. Destiny awaits—go forward to adventure!

Overall, Spellforce: The Order of Dawn is one of the sharpest-looking, sharpest playing games on the shelves today. Make sure you give this one a try, folks; we could be seeing one possible face of the future of fantasy gaming on PC.

If you like RTS then this game is a must buy. If you like RPG’s then this game is a must buy. If you haven’t played video games before then this is a great place to start. Probably one of the best games this year.

Spellforce is one of the rare games that mixes RTS and RPG effortlessly and perfectly in a fantasy environment, that appeals to the Tolkien freak in me! A game that anyone who likes these kinds of games should certainly check out.
PC Action

Now one thing is for sure … there are definitely no shortage of RTS or 3rd person action games out on the market these days. Everything from conquering civilizations to using Gods to destroy your enemy using a huge army can be found in droves, along with tons of games which allow you to run and gun or hack and slash your way through a barrage of enemies, so how do you know what to pick if you happen to be a fan of both but only have enough cash for one title? The answer is simple … Spellforce: The Order of Dawn by Phenomic. Spellforce blends in 3rd person fantasy action with a really good RTS engine, and pulls it off really, really nicely.
Worth Playing
Yes, I know what you are thinking right now. "Oh jeez, yet another developer tossing their hat into the RTS ring?" is probably bouncing around in your mind right now, and most gamers have good reason to have that initial reaction when it comes to the genre. Phenomic's Spellforce is indeed an RTS and does indeed put you in the shoes of the commander of your very own army, but unlike the hordes of other cookie-cutter RTSs Spellforce actually adds a few new twists to the tried and true RTS gameplay and comes across as a rather fresh experience.
I can't say I was expecting a whole lot from Phenomic and JoWood's RTS/RPG SpellForce: The Order of Dawn. Thankfully for my sanity and my happiness in this job, unexpected fun can surprise a guy from time to time. SpellForce isn't perfect, but it does have a lot of things going for it with a good blend of two genres that have been trying their best to form a blissful merger for some time now.
PC Gameplay (Benelux)

The music and visuals are excellent. And you know what? So is the core play of the game. There's a lot of innovation here in SpellForce. Although parts of it are rough around the edges, there's too much good gameplay here to pass up.
It's come to our notice that most games that combine the RTS and RPG genre tend to lean more towards a heavier presence of tactical gameplay, with but a smidgen of RPG elements added to the gameplay. Spell Force, however, encompasses a well-balanced combo of these elements, offering a rewarding experience for fans of both genres. An impressive fantasy setting, intriguing plot, and reasonably lengthy missions make for a solid experience. The thing is though, those who don't prefer a hefty dose of classic epic fantasy storytelling should probably stay away. Otherwise, we highly recommend you give it a try at least (provided you have a strong rig to test it on).
With all my grousing, though, I’m still glad that Phenomic put the effort into Spellforce that they did and I hope that future expansions or variations will be able to iron out the kinks in the otherwise compelling and engrossing gameplay. For anyone hoping to find a more traditional role-playing experience in a real-time strategy game, Spellforce is definitely worth a look. Let’s hope that Spellforce leads some RTS enthusiasts to know the joy of the RPG and that we’ll see more attempts at genre-blending that are this thoughtful in the future.

Although SpellForce is unlikely to offer much of a challenge for the most tactically astute RTS minds, it is unique, attractive and engaging enough to appeal to all but the most unforgiving fantasy fan.
Real-time strategy games let you harvest resources, build a base of operations, and commission an army to flatten your enemies as quickly as possible. Role-playing games let you play as a character who gradually gains power by attaining fabulous treasures and powers, while also earning experience levels from adventuring. Real-time strategy games have attempted to use more and more role-playing elements recently, and Encore and Phenomic's SpellForce: The Order of Dawn is the latest example of this trend.
Game Informer Magazine
There’s a lot of things to praise this title for, as well. The persistent single player world, where sub-quests span several maps and characters appear throughout the story, is very cool. The interface is smooth and easy to navigate. The depth of customization for your avatar is immense. Unfortunately, without the execution to match these great ideas, SpellForce is merely above-average, rather than excellent.
Just RPG
Overall, I think Spellforce deserves every bit of a 75% rating. It's a quality game that can become addictive very quickly, and only loses a few points on replayability, linearity, camera controls and voice acting. Don't let minor details like that stop you from enjoying one of the year's best surprises. By the time you've built your first Titan, you won't care.
Game Revolution
Innovation doesn’t usually spring up from out of nowhere; most inventions are actually new combinations of existing technology. Gears, wheels and engines were all around long before someone assembled them into a car. Ever since Eli Whitney first had the brilliant idea to mix together cotton and gin, inventors have been in a combining frenzy.
Absolute Games (AG.ru)
Cyber Gaming Network (CGN)
Though not extremely great, Spellforce does allow for fun to be had. With its ingenuity in game style, tied to it being a halfway decent RTS, Spellforce would definitely warrant a purchase in my book, but only after it decreased in price some. There is a multiplayer aspect, but it seems that very few people ever play it online, so I wasn’t able to try it out. If you get this game, let me know so we can play online.
All in all, Spellforce isn’t a bad RTS/RPG, it’s just sad that in neither case it’s a topper nor will become one. Despite the technical problems and the slow gameplay it remains a nice timefiller but kicking WC3 or Generals’ ass is not really an item here.
Computer Gaming World (CGW)
Is SpellForce great? No. Does it suck? Not even close. SpellForce at least tries something new, which is more than can be said for most RTS games these days. But whether that's enough for you depends on how badly you want to kill armies of orcs again.
Computer and Video Games (CVG)
A fairly entertaining mongrel of gaming styles, despite the simplistic gameplay and fiddly interface. It's long too, though you might not want to play through to the end...
As a single-player game, SpellForce shines. Players are treated to a very deep (albeit totally linear) storyline where they'll eventually be able to command warriors from six different races. NPCs that can be interacted with are clearly marked. There are a ton of minor quests to perform, along with the main overarching quest, so there's never a point in time when you're confused as to what you should be doing.
SpellForce is a disappointing compilation of ambition without practical delivery. It's a game broken into several fundamental components that never work on their own and never contribute to a whole that can be appreciated. It is failed potential and improper planning. Recognizing the minor accomplishments of complete mediocrity simply because an attempt was made to combine two different play styles sounds an awful like praising my idyllic blend of Street Fighter and John Madden simply because it sounds like a good idea, despite it inevitably being crap.
