Spider-Man: The Movie successfully purports the essence of the Spider-Man universe in fully rendered 3D form. The control takes some getting used to but overall the control dynamics are very intuitive. But be warned, a gamepad is a necessity to fully enjoy this title.

Overall, Spider-Man: The Movie is a really enjoyable game. Beautiful graphics, superb voice work and sound, and satisfying game play are the highlights. There are some frame rate issues during the outdoor missions, but usually the game runs fine. I would have to say that nothing is better than swinging around the huge city, coming and going as you please. Combat can become repetitive, but the boss battles are superb and there really aren't that many toadies to beat up anyway. All of the combo moves and web abilities are well done and fun to use. Whether you have seen the movie or not, Spider-Man is definitely worth playing.

Spider-Man is an altogether satisfying game, despite its notable flaw. It sustains excitement nearly all the way through with enough variety thrown in to keep you interested past the first few levels. Faithfulness to the spirit of the license (if not the letter) is also a big strength. Spidey achieves this success in much the same way as Jedi Knight II -- it takes everything that's cool about a license and makes it part of an otherwise enjoyable game. The two compliment each other quite well here.

gestiegen. Leider spinnt die
Betrachter-Kamera immer noch. Und
Gelegenheitsspieler vermissen angesichts
des deftigen Schwierigkeitsgrads
das fehlende Save-Sicherheitsnetz.

Although Spider-Man contains no multiplayer options, the game is filled with extras. Beat it at normal difficulty and you get a special spider-suit. There's even a way to beat the game and play it again as (gasp) the Green Goblin. Norman would be so proud! The other nod toward replayability comes from style points. Sure, anyone can beat a level, but the more Spider-Style(tm) you do it with, the more points you get, which are used to buy movie stills, secret costumes, and other goodies. This last point illustrates exactly who should buy this game despite its problems: anyone looking for more and more Spider-Man fun in between his or her multiple trips to the cinema. And at a near-budget price of $30, it's a trip most Spider-fans will enjoy taking.

Finally, Maguire's speech is always performed to the tee; completely understated but commanding at the same time. His traits of honesty and frankness are always appreciated. I only wished the game was able to sign up all the other actors/actresses from the movie for the game since the cinematic story for the game is worthy of that kind of treatment. There's one moment in the film where Spider-man struggles to do basic web slinging and manages to barely swing across a chasm only to hit a building straight in the wall. That kind of frustration with the controls, unfortunately, tames an otherwise highly involving work of art.

Overall, Spider-Man is a nice arcade-like game where you can swirl from building to building with your web, battling some bad guys in between, but it could have been alot more.

Spider-Man: The Movie is really two Spider-Man games. The outdoor levels are much more fun and enjoyable than the indoor levels--so much that the game could have been considerably better had there simply been more of the former and less of the latter. To be fair, some of the indoor missions are entertaining in their own right. And even despite the camera problems and some of the other issues, most players will probably enjoy playing what ultimately turns out to be a graphically enhanced version of the previous Activision Spider-Man game, which faithfully captured the superhero's moves and antics to begin with. For good measure, the sheer number of extras--which are rewarded to you based on your performance in each mission and include things such as Spider-Man Bowling and production artwork--along with the high degree of challenge, should keep you busy for some time.

Now that we come to the summary, I honestly didn't know what kept me going throughout the entire game (which I've managed to finish BTW, so yes it's also kinda short). All things considered, it has to be the sneaking, creeping, crawling, and using the web-zip and combos. Of course, when you spice it all up with colorful and appealing visual effects, you get a quite catchy game. It gives you one of those feelings that make you play like crazy until you finish the whole thing. At first I thought there's hardly anything in it that will make you wanna play the whole game again. Later on, when I became well-versed in the art of web-zipping and swinging, I wanted to unlock some of those cool bonus thingies. Although, even these bonus features don't add up to much.
