From the front of the pack to eighth place in only two seconds. This would be the short version of this review. In a blink your car rolls down three times, you hit the fences, fall into the abyss or become a charred piece of metal because of a huge barrel of explosives that landed on your head. Of course, you can't have any realistic demands from a game with such crazy races, its inspiration clearly coming from series like Burnout and focusing on spectacular explosions to take care of your rivals.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
I am now totally addicted to Split/Second, which I consider to be the most fun racing experience I have had in years. As an avowed arcade racing lover, on the personal computer there has not been much to savor of late, and this highly polished title takes adrenaline-pumping driving action to a whole new level. Throwing both realism and caution to the wind, the imaginative developers have given players sensational thrills and—best of all—fulfillment of our shared fantasies of what really would make the daily commute a truly enthralling, rather than utterly deadening experience.

Unfortunately, this game suffers from being a little too shallow, and after playing the same tracks over and over, it's a little too easy to tire of the game after the main story mode has been completed. Still, I would hope that there will be a sequel to this title, as the premise is solid. The execution just needs a little fleshing out.

Split/Second is unlikely to become your go-to racer, but while it lasts, it's one hell of a thrill ride. Tailing an opponent and taking advantage of his shortcut, watching a tall tower fall onto your speeding nemesis, drifting around a corner while miraculously avoiding destruction raining from the sky--these are great moments that will make you cry out in glee. This is a one-trick pony, and once you see through the trick, it's hard not to wish there was something more substantial to support it. But if you're in the mood for some rip-roaring fun with no strings attached, Split/Second makes for a boisterous weekend romp.

Once you get over the initial wow feeling you’re bound to get the first time you unleash a power play, it’s unlikely you’re going to swear by Split/Second as your go-to racer. Is it fun? Yes, but for how long is the question. With games like Burnout and Blur, each with a fair amount of extra content on the market, Split/Second can only be viewed as a worthy imitator.
