Plenty of people snap up new STALKER games just to re-experience that gloomy, haunted Zone that GSC has expertly crafted. There’s no game world quite like that in STALKER, no interactive experience that so effectively makes you feel a place. In Pripyat, since so many other complaints have been corrected or reduced, you’re ever more able to throw yourself into the immersive world and forget that you’re not in the Zone at all.

No doubt, there's a distinct lack of polish to every one of the Stalker games. But there is simply nothing else like them on the market. No other titles weave their magic in quite the same way, and you almost suspect Call of Pripyat's foibles are an integral part of how that magic works. This is a brave, brutal and often beautiful experience - not quite FPS, not quite RPG, not quite survival horror. It is Stalker. Importantly, few other games are.

The world of The Zone as presented in Call of Pripyat is all at once a sparse, barren, and yet somehow a living one, and the game provides a great sense of atmosphere in this regard. The new gameplay elements are solidly implemented, and aside from a couple of minor issues, this is one wasteland that fans will want to trek through.

For anyone who loves STALKER, it's hard to find a reason not to pick this one up. It offers the same free-roaming first person shooter action we've seen before with its signature foreboding atmosphere and a couple of new surprises. Casual action fans would probably be better off skipping this one, as it lacks polish and is one of the least accessible shooters out there. Yes, GSC has done a pretty good job with STALKER: Call of Pripyat, but the series is progressing a little too slowly; I don't think they can continue making more STALKER games at this pace. Until it's time to reboot the franchise or just start over fresh, GSC might be better off trying something new and coming back to the Zone in a few years' time.

The original Shadow of Chernobyl was an incredible game in many ways, offering players an opportunity to explore an exceptionally realized, radiation-blasted setting seeded with horror and entertainment. Yet it was also lacking in a few areas, one being polish, and another being a solid character progression infrastructure. With Call of Pripyat, GSC Game World delivers its most stable and playable version of the Zone yet. Though it's not quite as surprising as the original, it's still a standout game that deserves to be given a chance by anyone that reads this. There aren't many titles able to offer up such an affecting atmosphere mixed with enjoyable mechanics, and even if some bits of the game remain uneven, it's an experience that will stick with you long after it's over.

Had Call of Pripyat been the first entry in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, I wholeheartedly believe that it would have become an instant, endearingly flawed classic. But as the third game in a trilogy, it feels too much like a common scene presented uncommonly well. The Zone is still as ashen and eerily alive as ever, the NPCs still sling out more "bros" than a frat boy, and the Major's path through the carnage remains largely unchanged from Strelok's, complete with the apparently requisite oddly abrupt final sprint through a horde of well-armed opposition.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Unlike the earlier games in the series, Call of Pripyat is virtually bug-free; there’s only one bugged side quest that cannot be completed. This didn’t stop me from progressing in the main story, so I barely noticed; and the story was genuinely compelling. I wanted to finish the whole game and every side quest, which is something I can say about very few games. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat is very much worth the price of admission.

Only the slight sensation of datedness prevents this from scoring higher, and no doubt once the mods start flowing the value for money will get even better. But there's plenty here to keep the faithful feeling extremely optimistic about the prospect of a proper sequel. And there's still nothing out there quite like STALKER.

Cheat Happens
Like its predecessors before it, S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat is a solid FPS that goes beyond what we expect from the genre. Besides its mostly forgettable story, the third game in the series fires on all cylinders, creating a lasting and memorable experience that’s sure to stay with you long after you’ve finished it. Actor David Morse may not get the attention he deserves, but if there’s any justice in the world, this game will.

Call of Pripyat's multiplayer options, just like those of its predecessors, are routine and slightly clumsy, because the game's shooting mechanics don't work so beautifully when isolated from the context that makes them successful. But it's the chilly ambience and lifelike ecology that should lure you to the newest S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, not the ordinary online play. Well-constructed environments and superb sound design make The Zone as cheerless and ominous as ever. But it's also rich with resources, begging you to cultivate its secrets and withstand the hostilities. Series fans and newcomers alike should don their protective gear and journey forth.
