All in all, Away Team combines a number of different gaming styles and is a fun game. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to play a different type of strategy game.

There is only one aspect that detracts from the game: the difficulty level is laughable. I finished the first twelve missions on my first sitting with only the Borg Cube mission slowing me down to think about what I was doing. This should be taken into context because I wholy intend to go back to the earlier missions and get all of the objectives which should prove innumerably more difficult. Away Team is very enjoyable and is highly recommended to lovers of strategy games and Trek fans.

The bottom line is this game is fun. It is uncomplicated, mindless fun. You will not lose sleep over it, but you will enjoy it while you play. For the avid gamer, I can recommend Away Team to let your nerves settle between Tribes 2 matches. For the true Star Trek fan, you will love this game; it puts you into a good Star Trek plot and lets you spend a little more lime in your favorite world. The addition of known characters like Data and Worf gives the game a unique feel and an added level of Star Trek realism.

Kaiken kaikkiaan Away Team kuuluu Star Trek -pelien parempaan puoliskoon.

Star Trek: Away Team erscheint etwas spät.

I quite enjoyed Star Trek: Away Team despite the flaws. This is one of those situations where the blemishes are outweighed by the enjoyability. I especially liked the concept involving extras in a would-be television show and controlling their lives. Star Trek: Away Team is recommended for all those Trekkies out there. The Joystick is up.

PC Action

All in all, Star Trek Away Team won't bring you too many new things that haven't already been seen in Commandos (including the two player cooperative LAN network game). If you are a Star Trek fan, this game might interest you, and if you aren't, it might just prove to be sufficiently challenging that you'll keep playing for a while. Anyways, soon you'll have a far better choice: Commandos 2 and Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive.

Game Over Online
Other than the gameplay faults, the dressing or framing on this title is nothing short of professional. The interface is truly Star Trek like and it is not confusing, as one of my colleagues here mentions, as the other LCARS interface. The forays made against the Borg are fearsome. Since this game lacks Seven of Nine, you are unable, unlike in Raven's Elite Forces, to use a special gun to bypass the Borg's adaptability. The sheer intensity of trying to best a foe that can hardly be defeated is a horrific or terrific proposition. Though I wanted so hard to be charmed by this game, it definitely is missing something that is innate in games like Jagged Alliance. The Star Trek license in PC games seems headed towards a resurrection, with such successful titles like Starfleet Command, Elite Forces and Armada. In television, the new Star Trek show that is supposed to breathe new life back into the Star Trek universe is looming ever closer.

In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 68%. Trekkers will gain more enjoyment from this game than others based on its good storyline - they're also more likely to give the game more patience. Other gamers will find it too simple, linear, and restrictive. More freedom in assembling the away teams and their equipment, coupled with more RPG elements for the individual crew members, would have gone a long way towards making this a pretty good game.

Away Team is another in what is becoming a long line of disappointing Star Trek games. With a solid premise and well done graphics and audio, it showed a lot more promise than other Trek games I’ve played recently, but its sub-par AI made it boring. I found myself pushing to get through each level as fast as possible (which is pretty fast against the unimaginative enemy). Away Team certainly isn’t the worst game I’ve played, but it’s nowhere near the top of the list and won’t be occupying space on my hard drive any more.

As it stands, Star Trek: Away Team will only appeal to die-hard fans or novice players, which is really bad because with only a little more effort it could have been so much better.

IGN
There are lots of other bugs in this game that I didn't mention. Issues with audio, weapons that won't stay equipped and generally unbalanced gameplay. However, Away Team is a very stable title and can be played on relatively low-end systems. Given that this title is hitting shelves at the end of a fiscal year pretty much says it all. Expect a big patch soon. Star Trek Away Team is a very simple, very short action game that tells a decent story and has a fair amount of fan appeal. But it isn't much of a strategy game. The sad thing is that this could have been so much more if the mission and team selection were more flexible and less emphasis were placed on the underlying story ¿ there are umpteen episodes in syndication I can watch for that. Fortunately, there are numerous other games in development bearing the Star Trek moniker. At the end of the day Away Team is likely to be remembered as little more than a small course correction.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Perhaps the greatest crime perpetrated by Star Trek: Away Team is its self-billing as a “squad-based strategy” title which in reality is little more than a series of timing puzzles decked out in the titular franchise’s sets and uniforms. In fact, apart from the occasional freedom to use one of the game’s “sneak, kill, or stun” tactics in removing an obstacle from your path, there’s really not a whole lot of strategy required to make your way through its 18 missions, which are over far too quickly. That being said, the opportunity to sneak around, mindmelding with the enemy and using phaser rifles to stun everyone is an interesting one, and although it fails to meet up to the level of potential inherent in its premise, it’s still a decent romp in Roddenberry’s world. Star Trek: Away Team isn’t going to blow anybody away with its relatively uninspired, non-strategic gameplay, but its package of solid graphics, sound, and timing puzzles is a passable one.

So who is going to go for this game? I’m not sure. Die-hard Star Trek fans may be a little disappointed they don’t get to play any “real” characters, and squad-based strategy fans may be a little disappointed that the gameplay is average at best. (I would recommend checking out “Desperados” while you wait for Commandos 2 to ship). That’s not to say you can’t have some simple fun with this game. But it doesn’t do anything to push forward the game genre or the Star Trek franchise.

GamesFirst!
In short, while Star Trek: Away Team is not without its merits and innovations, it lacks a great many of the elements that make a good strategy game. Without an intelligent AI system, extensive and exciting weapons, or some way to modify the missions for replay value, Away Team quickly loses most of its initial appeal. Aside from the fact that it is based in a universe I have missed since the ending of the Next Generation series, Star Trek: Away Team holds little for the average strategy gamer that cannot be better found in many of the other squad-based tactical games on the market.

GameSpot
Had Star Trek Away Team incorporated real character building, included better enemy AI (as well as any AI whatsoever for your own units), allowed for more freedom in both equipment use and discovery, and required actual small-unit tactics instead of mindless sprinting and head-on encounters or tedious puzzle-solving, it could have been a good strategy game. As it stands, it's not much more than an episode of The Next Generation that requires a lot of mouse clicking.

Computer Gaming World (CGW)
So while Data and Worf put in some admirable voiceovers, they’re not enough to make this game feel like an honest-to-god piece of the Star Trek universe. If you really need a squad-based tactical game, get FALLOUT TACTICS. If you can’t live without your Trek, get ELITE FORCE or DEEP SPACE NINE: THE FALLEN. But if you’re dying for a Star Trek game that lets you have a bunch of guys run around, scan, and shoot, well, this one’s for you.

Some Trek games are great, some are bad, some are okay. This one's okay, if you just get into the excellent mood, the environmental detail and the strategic puzzle-solving of it all. If you try to get too rogue or off the beaten path, however, you'll end up phasering yourself in the foot. This is less 'black ops' than 'slighty off-white' ops; let's hope it serves as a frontier beacon for the next few scouts that probe out this way.

All Game Guide
Sadly, the games that capture the true feel and style of the Star Trek universe are few and far between. Star Trek: Away Team is more of the same uninspiring gameplay that makes the license unappealing to game developers. Its failure to adhere to simple precedents or develop surprising action involving interesting characters empties yet another promise of a quality title. This is a lukewarm title that fails to stir any emotions. Star Trek fans would do best to set phasers to "Avoid."
