Star Trek: Bridge Commander

I'm a Star Trek fan. I won't wear Klingon garb and harass grandma at Thanksgiving because she forgot the gagh, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and a bulk of the films. If you're a fan as I am, or perhaps even one of the more fanatical diehards, Bridge Commander will be sheer bliss. If you're a gamer, BC will just be delightfully cool. Aw, too bad.

Star Trek: Bridge Commander is easily the most enjoyable game of the series. With so many missed attempts at bringing the excitement and wonder of the show to an interactive electronic form it seams only statistically probable that eventually an entertaining game bearing the namesake of the franchise would kick ass, and STBC is without a doubt that game.

Although on rails and a bit twitchy in terms of stability, Bridge Commander has delivered an impressive, immersive title that finally has captured the essence of Star Trek and is like a rollercoaster... fast, intense, and over before you know it.

This game is all about great design decisions, intuitive interface and a compelling Trek story. My verdict is, Trek fans won't be disappointed -- quite the contrary. Especially those of you who are fans of the Next-Generation universe. STBC is proof that all Star Trek games are not created equal. Some are better than others, and STBC just happens to be one of the better ones.

Für echte Trekkies wird es eigentlich kaum ein Vorbei an diesem Spiel geben, denn wer würde nicht mal gerne Captain spielen. Allerdings werden pure Taktiker, oder Action Freaks weniger Gefallen an STBC finden, da die taktischen Möglichkeiten eher begrenzt sind und die Action bei Raumschlachten sehr gemächlich vonstatten geht. Das liegt daran, dass die Kommandocrew recht intelligent ist und man eigentlich nur Befehle zu erteilen braucht. Wem das zu langweilig ist, kann wie gesagt Steuerung und/oder Waffen manuell bedienen, was jedoch nichts daran ändert, dass drei Millionen Tonnen schwere Raumschiffe viel behäbiger zu handhaben sind, als z.B. ein X-Wing.

Ännu en gång har ett Star Trek-spel landat på mitt bord, men denna gång är jag mindre upprörd. Bridge Commander förmedlar en sällsynt närvarokänsla. Det är så här det måste kännas att vara kapten på ett av federationens rymdskepp. Utvecklarna har kommit ett steg närmare filmindustrin. Om de bara kunde kombinera denna upplevelse med actionelementen i Ravens Elite Force skulle det vara möjligt att överföra TV-avsnitten direkt till spelvärlden.

While its short duration and limited replayability may prevent it from enjoying a sustained life on your computer's hard drive, Bridge Commander is the first Star Trek space sim that actually feels like it's set in the Star Trek universe. Totally Games has managed to accurately translate the slow-paced tactical battles of the Star Trek universe into an interesting game.

Anfangs war ich vom Bridge Commander sehr angetan. Das Flair ist toll, alles wirkt wie im Fernsehen. Doch irgendwann habe ich mich daran satt gesehen, und dann passiert mir erheblich zu wenig. Man macht nicht viel mehr, als im richtigen Augenblick die richtigen Befehle zu erteilen. Und warum gibt es eigentlich keine spannenden Missionen auf Planetenoberflächen?

Het is iets te kort en biedt te weinig herspeelbaarheid, maar het is ontegensprekelijk het eerste Star Trek-game dat die naam echt waardig is. Geen geringe prestatie.

Een product dat helaas een aantal phaserhits heeft moeten incasseren. Leuk voor de liefhebbers.

There are a ton of intricate options and tactical scenarios, as well as some high-quality cameo appearances by Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner. Couple this with a decent plot, good-looking graphics and nice gameplay, and you're staring straight down the gullet of a Trekker's dream come true.

Totally Games hat es leider versäumt, Sie als Captain mehr in das Geschehen einzubauen. Die Crew nimmt Ihnen sämtliche Arbeit ab und denkt sogar für Sie. Als Captain möchte ich Entscheidungen treffen, aber das ist in Bridge Commander nur selten möglich. Falls ich dann doch mal eigenmächtig handle, wird mir einfach das Kommando entzogen. Dabei haben wir doch in Hunderten von Enterprise-Episoden oft genug gesehen, dass es nicht immer ratsam ist, den Befehlen vom obersten Flottenkommando blind zu gehorchen. Ferner bleibt es mir ein Rätsel, warum keine Joystick-Steuerung im Spiel vorhanden ist. Commander Ryker hat doch in Star Trek: Der Aufstand auch die Enterprise mit einem Joystick gelenkt und schließlich gerettet.

Although shallow in gameplay, Bridge Commander's production qualities are commendable and something that Star Trek fans can really sink their teeth into. The voiceovers are excellent and the order-giving system is easy to manipulate, but complex strategies never really come into play.

Die Kämpfe machen Spaß, die Technik ist in Ordnung und trotzdem ist Bridge Commander im Storymodus enttäuschend schwach. Im Mehrspieler- und Quick Battle Modus dagegen macht die Sache schon mehr Spaß. Allerdings: Das Spiel hat nach wie vor eine recht große Community, die zahlreiche Mods erstellt hat, durch die man nicht nur andere Brücken oder Raumschiffe bekommt, sondern auch das Spiel an sich verändert wird. Dadurch kann unter Umständen auch der Spielspaß vergrößert werden.

Nur, wo ist das Spiel? Als Captain habe ich kaum mehr zu tun, als alle paar Minuten Alarm zu geben, den Kurs zu ändern und hin und wieder meine Crew-Mitglieder um Rat zu fragen. Irgendwie habe ich ständig das Gefühl, als ob auch ohne mich alles weiterlaufen würde. Selbst die Schiffsgefechte funktionieren automatisch. Bridge Commander ist mehr Film als Spiel.

So what do you do if you have already bought this game and can't return it for a cash refund? Simple, you eBay it and don't link to this review, though I would suggest rummaging around the CD-ROM because all the voice files are in MP3 format. It's time to revamp those OS alert sounds!
