Game Captain

So if you like to shoot fancy lasers, beam, and pulse weapons, explore strange planets, bounce around the outer hull of the Enterprise, wade through murky swamps, jump across lakes of bubbling lava, or sneak through the gutted remains of a drifting Starship then look no further. Elite Force II offers all of that and much more.

Is this the last gasp for Star Trek gamers — Activision’s Undiscovered Country, as it were? If so, then of my friend, I can only say this…of all the franchises I have encountered in my travels, Elite Force was the most (choke)…human.

It was…fun.

Overall, Elite Force II does justice to the legacy left by its predecessor despite the fact that a completely new development team handled it. The combat can get a little mundane at times and some of the weapons seem truly outlandish by Star Trek standards, but the cinematic pacing, outstanding storyline, and addictive multiplayer modes should keep fans of the FPS genre and Star Trek alike happy as a Ferengi in a Latinum-plated bathtub.

Star Trek: Elite Force II is full of impressive features and offers very solid FPS fun. A strong sequel all the way, and with a little attention given to linearity and dialogue options/romances, this series could go where no FPS has gone before.

Vanhahkosta grafiikkamoottorista on viritetty varsin näyttävä ja sutjakasti pyörivä paketti, ja äänimaailma on elokuvatasoa. Kun tämän lisää hyvin toteutettuun, vaikkakin tavanomaiseen tarinaan, käsiin jää kelpo leffa, jossa on ihan siedettävä ammuskelupeli. Erillisen kehun arvoista on pelin ja elokuvaelementtien lähes Mafian tasoinen saumaton yhdistäminen.

In an industry where so many sub-par licensed games are released on a regular basis (Enter the Matrix, anyone?), Elite Force II is a professional, polished product that everyone involved should be proud of. If you're going to crank out a licensed game, this is pretty much the way to do it. It may not be especially revolutionary, but Elite Force II is an often entertaining and consistently solid shooter that no Star Trek fan should be without. I'd be surprised (and a bit disappointed) if most of the EF2 team wasn't snapped up in short order; anyone who can make a Star Trek game this good deserves a job in this industry.

Star Trek: Elite Force 2 is not a great Star Trek game nor is it a great first person shooter. While there are moments of brilliance the piece as a whole is let down by its derivative nature, by its unwillingness to draw the player completely into the Star Trek universe. Instead it mixes too many contrived settings and plot twists. The game however is very well produced. It provides a solid, albeit slightly forgettable, piece of entertainment. If this is indeed the last game to bear the proud Star Trek name then it's not quite the swansong one might hope for. On the bright side there have certainly been far worse products to be branded under the Trek banner. If the franchise could consistently produce titles of this calibre then Star Trek would probably be able to struggle on and live a little longer. Prospering however, will require just that little bit more.

Seriously, even though some weird level design decision and venerable AI code may present a fairly serious drawback, the aforementioned qualities of EF2 outweigh the bads. Shooter fans that appreciate the Star Trek universe should go out and buy this game. The single-player is longer than in the original (I can't say exactly now many hours it took me to finish it, but it's certainly more than it took me to beat the original). There are also a lot of secret areas, and if you collect enough golden ships, you can unlock bonus maps. The multiplayer is standard and not exactly the game's main selling point, but at least it's present.

Elite Force II was developed by a different studio than the one that did the original game, but it stays true to the spirit and style of its predecessor, making it another well-done Star Trek game. Like the first Elite Force, the game packs enough pure action to make it appealing to those who like first-person shooters in general, and it's got plenty of Star Trek science fiction in it for those more interested in the source material. That makes it readily recommendable to those who fall into either category, and especially to those who fall into both.

Despite being pretty short, the singeplayer does give you a very good storyline and enough incentive to keep going, and not only for Trekkies. Sound and graphics are top notch, controls and weapons are too. In short: the game feels nice, but does not live up to my expectations.

Releasing a game under a license such as the Star Trek one can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand you will have all the fans from the television series almost automatically onboard. On the other hand you risk alienating all the people who are not fans of the TV series and who see Trekkies as a lower form of life. That being said, it is truly a testament to the developer when they are able to overcome that obstacle and create a game that will appeal to both fans of the series and those looking for a good game that doesn’t stand solely on the support of its original material. The original Star Trek Elite Force managed to do this, and this sequel is a worthy successor to the first installment.

The graphics are based on the Quake III engine, which is getting pretty old now. But things still look good and they've recreated the Enterprise faithfully enough to make it a thrill to simply explore. One innovation is the Tricorder, which is used occasionally for a mini-game moments where you have to reroute power and you can use different viewing modes to find hidden things. The game also offers multiplayer, but doesn't really add anything new. Deathmatch and capture-the-flag, that's about it. If you've got a craving for Trek, and first-person shooters, it's worth a look, but don't expect anything new or different out there in the Final Frontier.

If you haven't played the original Elite Force, go get a copy. It's odd, but the game was better when Voyager was still adrift in the Delta Quadrant.
