Star Trek: Klingon

Não é bem certo que se possa chamar Star Trek: Klingon de "jogo", mas não deixe que isso o impeça de jogá-lo. Este CD-ROM, pode ser jogado da mesma forma que o episódio Star Trek: The Next Generation, porém filmado com perspectiva de primeira-pessoa. Caracterizado como um "simulador de deck holográfico de imersão total", a ação do jogo se passa no próprio deck holográfico onde o líder do Conselho Supermo de Klingon, Gowron, tenta ensinar um pouco de cultura Klingon para seu personagem, um menino chamado Pok.

Clearly, this ''holodeck simulation'' — which includes 90 minutes of original footage directed by Jonathan Frakes, who plays Comdr. Will Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation and who's helming the next Trek movie — is aimed at that demographic of the Trekkie universe that doesn't think it unusual to serve rokach blood pie at parties or respond to coworkers' suggestions with a rousing ''Qapla'!'' As the action unfolds from Pok's perspective, Klingons fill the screen with leers and scowls, occasionally ceasing their chest-thumping blather long enough to allow you to make decisions. Choose wisely, and you preserve your all-important honor; choose foolishly, and Chancellor Gowron (played with bug-eyed aplomb by series regular Robert O'Reilly) gives you holy heck in the holodeck. On the whole, though, Klingon's interactivity runs a bit thin; with all the dysfunction on display, you might think of Klingon not as a game but as the bony-forehead version of Stuart Saves His Family.

Unfortunately, the length of the game was fairly disappointing. It took about 40 minutes in all, and with no variation in gameplay, that's about all you get. It's great fun the first time through though, and for a quick thrill, it's worth it. The addition of the Language Lab will keep long time followers here, and the voice recognition technology allows you to quickly learn the galaxy's favorite language, Klingon! Something to spice up any resume.

While billed as "the ultimate interactive adventure," adventure gamers beware - Star Trek Klingon has less in common with A Final Unity or Harbinger than it does with Simon & Schuster's earlier Trek reference titles. The three-CD package is broken into two separate programs: the Language Lab wherein you learn basic Klingon phrases and bits and pieces about Klingon culture, and the Immersion Studies CDs, the "game" part of the set.

At the end of the day, for all its interest, Star Trek: Klingon is just another example of multimedia whistles and bells overtaking real content. Information on the Klingon Empire is out there, and, given SSI's close connections to Paramount for this project, readily at hand. A Klingon Encyclopedia probably would have been far more interesting to Klingon fans and wannabees, but this is not that. What we're left with is Klingon Sound Bytes--"immersion" amounts to tidbits of scattered information, gradually accumulated. Nothing that's new to anyone who's kept up with Star Trek in all its television manifestations. Die-hard Klingon fans will find ST:K an amusing romp through familiar territory, but anyone genuinely interested in learning the Klingon way will be better served elsewhere.
