Star Trek: New Worlds shows that the franchise can improve, despite many years of often-horrible games. With this game (despite its damaging flaws) and those like Elite Forces and hopefully the upcoming The Fallen, the franchise can rise from the ashes. The game shows promise, and maybe 14 Degrees can make another attempt at the land-based thing and give it what it deserves. While the game is still a good one, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to someone who was looking for a good RTS.

Star Trek: New Worlds is clearly an an unfinished game. We have yet to see whether the patch will remedy some of these problems. Well, quite frankly, there are too many obvious flaws and bugs, so it's going to have to be one helluva patch...

Bei Star Trek New Worlds haben die Entwickler einen Großteil des Potenzials verschenkt. Das beginnt bei der schlappen Grafik und endet bei der fehlenden Speicherfunktion. Ich vermute stark, dass das Team auf Teufel komm raus fertig werden musste. Das ist eigentlich schade, denn die Missionen sind gut durchdacht; vor allem die unterschiedlichen Einsatzziele haben mich einige Zeit bei der Stange gehalten. Und die Steuerung ist für ein 3D-Strategiespiel sogar ganz ordentlich gelungen. Weniger schlimm finde ich auch, dass das Star-Trek-Szenario sehr aufgesetzt wirkt. Trotzdem beraubt sich New World damit des letzten Arguments, um gegen die starke Echtzeit-Konkurrenz bestehen zu können.

Erstaunlich, wie viel man heute noch bei einem Echtzeit-Strategiespiel falsch machen kann. Irgendein kleiner Schalk hat den Designern offenbar eingeflüstert, bloß alles ganz anders als sonst im Genre zu machen. Warum einfach, wenn es kompliziert geht - das mögen sch die Programmierer gedacht haben, während sie eine vernünftige Speicherfunktion vergaßen. Dabei wurde dieser Titel laut Herstellerangabe in den letzten Monaten noch extra auf Benutzerfreundlichkeit getrimmt. Holla, die Waldfee - wie mag das Spiel vorher ausgesehen haben? Schade, denn die zahlreichen Missionen machen durchaus Spaß.

New Worlds is yet another flop for the Star Trek game franchise. Has there ever been a good one? At this point I really can’t recall any. The many failures such as this one cast clouds over the possible sunrise of any good games that may have been released. The level of difficulty is fairly high due to the lack of an intuitive interface and previous experience in other RTS games is certainly encouraged by this reviewer. And patience -- anyone who plays Star Trek: New Worlds must have a lot of patience.

А для тех же редких граждан, что обычно начинают читать с конца и наталкиваются на ужасающие системные требования, в двух словах передадим так называемый итог: как игра New Worlds неоригинальна, вторична, а главное, пропитана убийственной меланхолией. Как представитель вселенной Star Trek — непонятна окружающим. А как набор хорошей mp3-музыки с эпическим размахом — самое оно. Учитесь, господа девелоперы, именно так дОлжно писать настоящий ambient.

New Worlds est un bon jeu de stratégie, réalisé avec soin et amour des choses bien faites. Il lui manque cependant l'originalité qui l'aurait distingué de la concurrence, ou à défaut cette faculté d'impliquer le joueur pour ne plus le lâcher. Un jeu auquel on joue distraitement, sans trop s'impliquer, à moins peut-être d'être un Trekkie pur et dur.

Als ich das Teil vor einem Jahr auf der ECTS sah, war ich noch schwer beeindruckt. Jetzt schlägt die Ernüchterung mit voller Härte zu. New Worlds hatte, zumindest auf dem Papier, jede Menge Potenzial. Geblieben ist nur ein schaler Geschmack eines missglückten Versuchs, die dritte Dimension auf Kosten der Spielbarkeit und der Handlung beizufügen. Schade.

Es ist, als seien die letzten zwei Jahre an den Entwicklern sang- und klanglos vorbeigerauscht. All die Features, die Strategiespiele wie Earth 2150, Dark Reign 2 oder Homeworld so mitreißend gemacht haben: In New Worlds suchen Sie sie vergebens, Stattdessen gibt es spielerische Einheitskost, umständliche Menüs und teilweise kryptisch anmutende Missionsbriefings. Das kommt davon, wenn man sich zu sehr auf die Zugkraft einer attraktiven Lizenz verlässt: Star Trek: New Worlds wäre vor einem Jahr noch wohlwollend aufgenommen worden. Jetzt ist es nur noch Mittelmaß.

Attention Star Trek RTS fans – this game is for you. The intricate controls and numerous units will definitely light your fire. You’ll be able to get your game on for a good chunk of time with this one. The scrolling was a bit more palatable for me, but the building polygon integrity was less than wonderful. The sights and sounds of the game were authentic, which is always nice. Now, if you’re not an avid Star Trek fan, avoid this game like the plague. All the structure/resource, gathering/unit production was typical for an RTS. The plot line is standard – kill ‘em til they die from it. There are some decent battle graphics, but nothing to have a stroke over. While ST gamers may be screaming, “Beam me up, Scottie!!” (yes, I know that was never actually said on the show) after the first couple of missions, the rest of us will be bored, wondering what’s on TV.

If the fact that it is a Star Trek game is enough to sway you to its cause, then you will no doubt put up with New Worlds' inadequacies and thoroughly enjoy it. But if you want a serious real-time strategy game you may want to look elsewhere - the beautiful graphics and authentic Trek feel aren't enough to overcome the confused AI, awkward interface and glacially slow pace in what is ultimately a disappointing game.

So here we have it, an attractive RTS with immense environments, and an intriguing resource collection and mining system, but a near total lack of variety between races, slow and unintelligent units, and some seriously lengthy treks across wide terrain with nothing going on. There are a couple things to like about this game, but so many irritating details hampered the experience that I can’t justify wanting to play it for more than a sitting.

Når spillet så også er kedeligt og ualmindeligt rutineplaget, så står Star Trek: New Worlds tilbage som et spil jeg ikke vil gå ud i regnvejr for at hente, om så det var mod betaling. Jeg ved ikke om der hviler en forbandelse over Star Trek-franchisen, men jeg har stadig ikke prøvet et rigtig godt spil i dette fiktive univers siden 80'erne.

While Star Trek: New Worlds is an ambitious attempt to portray unseen aspects of the Star Trek canon, it is unsuccessful in conveying the universe’s scope and grandeur. The weak interface, annoying gameplay, and lack of variety and balance between the races make the game a failed experiment. Confusing, superfluous functions and routine micromanagement also detract from any enjoyment that even Star Trek fans might glean from this title. In the end, New Worlds boldly goes nowhere.

Star Trek: New Worlds has the feel of a game that is unfinished. Can a patch save this experience? I'm leaning towards a no on that, there are just too many issues to deal with here. New Worlds reminded me a lot of that recent RTS, LucasArts released, based on the Star Wars universe… what was that one called again? Yeah, neither is memorable enough and neither is worth checking out either, so stay away from New Worlds at all costs.

I have a theory that someone accidentally replaced the STAR TREK: NEW WORLDS design docs with a list of things you’re not supposed to implement in a real-time strategy game. This would explain a lot. It would explain why you can’t save a game in progress, so you’ll have to play through an entire hour-long scenario in one sitting; if you lose, you get to start over from the very beginning. It would explain why there is no way to change the game speed, or to pause and give orders. It would explain why you can’t change any sound or graphics options from within the game. It would explain how STAR TREK: NEW WORLDS turned out to be one of the worst real time strategy games you could inflict on yourself.
