Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
It’s not that I didn’t enjoy playing this game, because I did. The experience was not unlike going to one of those fancy restaurants where the entrees are smaller than the rolls and leave you hungry for more. With only two single-player tables, I felt myself wanting more variety than the game could provide me. It really seemed like it was two or three tables short of a real smash hit. As it stands, those of you who enjoy both pinball and Star Trek will find the combination provided in this title to be amusing and entertaining. It won’t blow you away and it’s not as strong a title as Balls of Steel, but it’s a decent pinball game and a fair tribute to Star Trek.

If this game had been released a few years ago, then it might have had a chance of standing up well to the heavy computer pinball competition out there. But with the likes of Sierra's 3D Ultra Pinball series, Empire Interactive's Pro Pinball series, and -- most importantly -- the standard set by GT Interactive's Balls of Steel, Star Trek Pinball is simply left in the dust. The gameplay gets boring really fast, and there is no redeeming innovation to keep one's interest. So, in the end, neither pinball aficionados nor Trekkies would be very satisfied by this offering.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend this to most people, even fans of the show, because it's a thinly veiled attempt to bilk some money out of the Star Trek franchise. Not much thought was given to gameplay apparently, and this game can be chalked up as another victory for the pinball purists who say computers can't recreate all the fun of playing the game on a real machine. Let us hope Interplay has a little more respect for gamers with future titles if they plan to live long and prosper.

Computer Gaming World (CGW)
In any event, what you get are three tables – To Boldly Go, Qapla', and Nemesis – that provide acceptable, but completely uninspired, pinball action. Despite an overcomplicated manual that blathers on for pages about the game's features, most of the time it feels like there's nothing to do except watch your ball slip down the middle while a Klingon laughs at you. This game can't hold a candle to Empire's PRO PINBALL: TIMESHOCK, the current king of pinball simulations.

The game simply doesn't feel like real pinball. It's more like a cheap imitation sent over from an alternate universe. And in the end, the whole thing is, as Spock might say, "highly illogical."
