Gamer's Pulse
In conclusion, Birth of the Federation doesn't come anywhere near breaking the curse over all Star Trek games to date. This game is nearly impossible to play, until they get a patch out for it. The only way I would recommend this game is if you are a die-hard Trek fan. This game has a lot of promise, and it could be a lot of fun, if only it wasn't so slow and buggy. Maybe a patch will fix it, but a company shouldn't have to patch a game simply to make it playable. I find it impossible that Microprose's QA department did not find these problems. Chalk BoF up to another game rushed out the door incomplete, with the programmers already working on a patch. Shame on you, Microprose. You could have done so much better.

Arm Photon Torpedoes! ;-)

Birth of the Federation is a very complex game that combines the highly popular theme of Star Trek with an amazing strategy game engine. Both Trekkies and strategy game fans will be enthralled for hours trying to either rule the universe or bring peace to everyone. No matter what path a person takes, it won't be very easy, and it won't happen any time soon because the gameplay is really good and entertaining, and the amount of strategy that must be used is immense. Not for shoot-'em-up fans, this game uses great graphics and sounds to provide for a full Star Trek strategically experience that is well worth its price.

With considerable depth, challenging AI and a strong central theme which is perfectly in-tune with the Star Trek universe, Star Trek: Birth Of The Federation is a compulsive ans slightly cerebral empire builder pitched at Star Trek strategy fans who like their slice of strategy to be complex, involving and deep.

Game Over Online
Birth of the Federation's greatest achievement is creating an environment in which the player feels he is actually controlling a specific empire from the Star Trek universe. The downfall is the basic gameplay model, abysmal customizability options and the lack of good ship-to-ship combat. While by all means not an awful game, Birth of the Federation lacks the innovation and dedication necessary for a great game in the day where money has long been the prime motivator and games flow into the market like fruit from the Horn of Plenty.

Pelit
Satunnaisia mielenkiintokäyrän värähdyksiä lukuunottamatta Birth of Federation on pitkästyttävä, rajoittunut ja rajoittava mikronysväyspeli. Tuotanto-, tutkimus-, tiplomatia- & tuhoamispeliä haikailevalle löytyy mielekkäämpiä vaihtoehtoja, vaikka Master of Orion II halpishyllystä. Pahinkaan trekkeri ei saa pelistä paheelleen tyydytystä, koska pelin trekkiys jää lähinnä ulkoasun tasolle.

Its mission, to blandly go where every other galactic conquest game has gone before...

Microprose has long been known for publishing some of the best empire building games in the form of the Civilization and Master of Orion series. It is a general consensus that the Master of Orion series is one of the best space-empire building games. So it was with baited breath that everyone awaited the coming of Star Trek: Birth of the Federation. We had all hoped that it would be MOO with a Trek theme. That it would be a quasi MOO3. Unfortunately this is not the case. Birth of the Federation is its own game.

Game Revolution
In summary, I found Birth of the Federation to be an unsatisfying intellectual experience. While random maps and five advanced sentient races ensure many hours of gameplay, the confusing interface and sub-par graphics could only entice the most dedicated of Starfleet cadets. At times, I found it to be even more tedious than one of Sarek's many readings of the FalCUikal Kya'shin, a treatise on Vulcan Meditation. With the vast galaxy known to the Federation as the setting, it is illogical that Microprose has managed to create such an uninteresting game.

Computer Games Magazine
Taken individually, the gripes listed above aren't that bad, but as a whole they really bring down what otherwise could have been a great game. Even with them, the game sometimes shows its fun and "just one more turn" factors, but after a while even those points of lights are snuffed out like stars being sucked into a Trek black hole.
