As a huge fan of Star Wars myself, I really enjoyed this game. It’s full of some fun times and frustrations, but overall, if you like the genre and just so happen to be a fan of the universe this game is set in, then by all means I can’t recommend it enough. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a Force Commander Expansion sometime down the road if it catches on quick enough and gains a good following. Keep an eye out for GW Werewolf while out there playing on the zone. Maybe we’ll end up playing and I can throw some mobile artillery your way.

Game industry News (GiN)
Star Wars Force Commander is an excellent addition to the collection of gamers who enjoy realtime strategy and are looking for a bit of a change form the normal rush mentality. This game earns 4 1/2 GiN Gems, with just a bit off the top because of the excessive use of controls and an above average learning curve. So do your patriotic duty and join the Empire today. Leave all that Jedi mumbo-jumbo alone, cause with a platoon of AT-ATs filled with loyal stormtroopers, you can become the scourge of the galaxy without a lightsaber in sight.

A great addition to the SW list of products, let down a bit by the graphics the game still comes through to provide great gameplay and some good level design means that you could be playing this for a while.

Force Commander is a great game and I recommend it to all RTS fans. And if you happen to be a Star Wars fan as well - this is (to quote Lucas Arts) your dream come true.

I will not be giving the game an Editor’s Choice award simply on the basis that this is not a game for everyone. Yes, I know you could say that about all games, but much of Force Commander’s appeal depends on the player’s love of Star Wars. This is not a game like X-Wing Alliance or Jedi Knight in the sense that it will not appeal to all based on its merits as a game. Don’t get me wrong, I found Force Commander to be quite fun, but what will keep me coming back is my love of the subject matter. In the end, however, I was pleased with what the game turned out to be. It does not live up to the dream of the ultimate Star Wars strategy game, but provides a fun ride through that galaxy far, far away.

Force Commander bærer præg af at have en kanonlicens i ryggen i form af Star Wars-sagaen, men spillet lever hverken op til dens navn, mine forventninger eller LucasArts forpligtelser over for en trofast fanskare.

Force Commander overtuigt nooit, is slechts zelden memorabel en biedt ronduit zwakke gameplay.

You do end up getting the full-blown Star Wars experience with a compelling story and ample controls. Plus, the single-player game is entertaining. We just wish that three-plus years in development had been enough to iron out all the bugs. Star Wars fanatics will still probably dig this, and I was tempted to give it four stars, but the flaws were just too strong. Use the patch, Luke. Use the patch.

Every kid who has seen The Empire Strikes Back has dreamed of reenacting the famous battle on the ice planet Hoth. So when LucasArts announced Force Commander, a real-time strategy game set in the Star Wars universe, many fans spent sleepless nights imagining themselves in the cockpit of a mighty AT-AT, trudging through the snow, blasting away at rebel scum. Unfortunately, Force Commander doesn't quite live up to the expectations that many fans had for the game. Although Star Wars fanatics will surely enjoy recreating battle scenes from their favorite movies, diehard RTS addicts will likely be disappointed with the results.

Ever since Force Commander was first announced way back in 1997, Star Wars fans have been drooling at the chance to control the Imperial and Rebel fleets in a RTS environment. Given LucasArt's poor showing with their last foray into the realm of strategy gaming, Rebellion, many were wary at what LucasArts had planned next for their beloved Star Wars universe. We waited and waited and waited. And then last year LucasArts told us all that the Force Commander project would be delayed to update the previous 2D engine to an all-new completely 3D engine. So we waited and waited and waited some more. "That's okay, LucasArts," we all said. "We'll wait for another year as long as you give us a top-notch 3D Star Wars RTS." Unfortunately, that day never came...

The list of poor design decisions continues. In true 3D-fashion, you can freely position the camera as you play. Unfortunately, the camera controls are also awkward and clunky. Units are ridiculously hard to select, and grouping them together is even more frustrating. And in the “What were they thinking?” category, grouped and numbered units lose their grouping once inside a building or transport vehicle. Dump your crack squad of troops out of an armored transport, and you'll have to painfully reselect and regroup each of them. This is not fun when in combat. FORCE COMMANDER was a great idea — t’s too had that a myriad of gameplay flaws bring it down, Playing this RTS is like trying to eat spaghetti with a spoon; there’s good stuff in there, but you can’t get at it.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a Real Time Strategy game called "Star Wars: Force Commander" was released. That game was an incredible product and sold a million copies. Unfortunately, right now, in our galaxy, we are stuck with a second-class, soulless product. For a little context, I love strategy games and I'm still into Star Wars despite the lack of a meaningful plot in "Episode 1" (come on, it was a very pretty movie!). In fact, I had high hopes that Force Commander would add depth to the conflict between the Rebellion and The Empire while broadening the Star Wars universe. Instead, what actually came in the box was a bland game that was "ok" on a feature by feature count, but fails as a total package. In this case, the sum is less than the total of the parts.

Unless you're a diehard Star Wars fan, I wouldn't go near Force Commander with a ten-foot pole. LucasArts announced several months ago that they've teamed up with Verant Interactive to produce a massive online Star Wars title. I can't say I blame them for going with Verant Interactive as the developer, I wouldn't trust the LucasArts developers with any more Star Wars titles either, not after this hunk of junk.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Force Commander has a decent story and its license is unquestionably the most powerful in the industry, and that alone will draw thousands of players to it. And that is a great tragedy. This is one of the worst strategy games I’ve ever played, and I am truly saddened that the “Star Wars” name has been reduced to this level of entertainment. Force Commander is a product that early on saw its design questioned and fun factor re-evaluated, and obviously for good reason. LucasArts never should have released it. The concept behind it admittedly is fantastic, but the execution suffers in almost every conceivable manner. The interface is a true clunker, the graphics and artificial intelligence are truly suspect, and the proliferation of bugs leads Star Wars: Force Commander down the path of the Dark Side, beware!
