Is the game worth $15 a month? I would say that for me it would be. Because casual players can feel just as at home with the game, probably only as non-combat characters though, I think many people would probably answer the same way. Though there are a couple of areas that need improved, the game earns a 5 GiN Gem rating. For Star Wars fans it is a must-have no-brainer. Others will still find an enjoyable world with a lot of choices and a fair amount of role-playing.

If there has ever been a game that has amassed an unbelievably enormous following not months, but years before its eventual release, it’s Star Wars Galaxies. In fact, I know people who have not only organized their own guild for Galaxies, but they’ve set up an elected office hierarchy, mission statements, decided which planet they’ll eventually inhabit, allocated professions, and not one of them had played the game for even an instant when all of this was decided. Scary, no? Luckily for them, Galaxies has delivered in spades.

A great experience if you have patience and a dedication to the Star Wars world, if your enthusiasm for the project isn't total then I'd suggest giving it a few months more patching…otherwise I'll meet you in the Mos Eisley cantina, just remember to leave your droids outside.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… Star Wars Galaxies is without a doubt my favorite game of this year (next to Vice City and hopefully Half-Life 2)!! SWG is an Massively Multiplayer Online Epic RPG, I am not sure if I will be able to describe the greatness of this game, so what I am going to do in this review is try to explain the basis and situations of this game as best as I can (I will try to make it quick, for I am needed back on Tatooine soon)!

What can we conclude out of this ? Is Star Wars Galaxies a bad game ? Certainly not. Is it a top game ? Neither. The game is rather located in the middle class of MMORPG’s and is only noticeable due to its overly known universe which will also justify a purchase. When you’re fan of Star Wars this game will definitely be something for you, but you’ll need to put some serious time to get to know everything. If the small errors that are currently present will be fixed (which will hopefully happen) then this game will grow out to a beautiful whole (there are for instance plans for space combat) but the only negative thing that will remain is the way too high price tag. You have to cough up no less than €13 a month to be able to keep playing and I don’t find that price justified. Let’s hope LucasArts makes this game shine a little more and make the Star Wars world vivant.

In all, I have been pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable Star Wars Galaxies is. Granted the bugs are annoying, as are the server outages in the morning as they apply patches to fix said bugs since I play a lot between 7 and 9 am as no one is in at work yet. The fact is that I would not be irritated at the servers being down if it was not fun to play. And the reason for that is, if it was not fun to play, then, I wouldn't play it, so who gives a crap if the servers are down. Nor would I be logging on night after night if the game was not fully developed, or had uninteresting character classes or seemed like a half-baked idea that was poorly implemented. Does it have a few rough edges? Yes. Will they be smoothed out over the course of the next few months? I hope so.

Admittedly, Sony has done a great job of holding new players by the hand and introducing Star Wars Galaxies in a way that makes you feel part of the action - much more so than before. Progress is fast and painless at lower levels and is actually interesting, the quests are fun, the combat engaging. Even the space-based expansion 'Jump to Lightspeed' is included in the basic package and forms part of the tutorial itself, so it's better value, too. But be warned: right now there's a lack of real content above level 30, so keeping these new and returning players could be tricky unless content is added regularly to keep people playing.

Frictionless Insight
Although nowhere near as unstable at this point as many other persistent world games have been at launch, SWG is still far more unstable than it ought to be. Crashes must be fixed, missions de-bugged, and chat mechanisms repaired. Banish these things, and it becomes much easier to be patient about content and skill-balancing issues. With these systems properly cleaned up, players can get on about their business they way they always do in these games and entertain themselves while substantive gameplay issues are resolved. Certainly, SWG already gives you a wealth of tools to tell your own story and make your own mark on the world. The trick is, you'll have to care about that in order to enjoy the game.

Armchair Empire, The
Though Star Wars Galaxies does have the potential of becoming a better MMORPG, the current version of the game is dull and lacks in quality. Hopefully the team over at LucasArts will deliver useable vehicles, better upgradeable classes, and another thing that just slipped my mind…oh yeah, a fun gaming experience not filled with running around on pointless errands. SWG can be summed up as EverQuest with Star Wars characters, but that would be unfair to the amount of work taken to develop this sub-par game. If you are a fan of MMORPG’s and don’t mind the fifteen dollars a month to play the game, you should check out Star Wars Galaxies; but don’t expect the same amount of entertainment as other games such as EverQuest.

So, what's the bottom line, then? When it came time to score Galaxies, I initially thought of all the bugs and broken areas, the steep subscription fee and poor customer service, the often slow-paced gameplay and as-yet unrealized potential of the game. And yet, even with all these drawbacks, I find myself hooked -- there's fun to be had, if you're willing to dig through the frustrations. There's a large contingent of Galaxies players here at GameSpy (read our first impressions and pile-on features) and it's all we've spoken about at lunch for the last three weeks. In perhaps six months Galaxies will be everything its developers promised it would be, and if you're not willing to play an "avoid the bug" meta game, you'll definitely want to wait. It's a mark of how much potential it has, though, that even in its broken, buggy state, it's the most fun I've ever had with an MMO.

Like all MMORPGs, Star Wars Galaxies can be addictive once you get started. It’s the Stockholm Syndrome effect— learning to love your captor. Once you find a few trades you enjoy, the skill system is good, and there are numerous dangling carrots to keep you building one skill or another. A large-scale story has been promised for the coming months, but for now, the biggest problem facing the game is that the world, outside of tire popular cities, seems rather empty. It’s enjoyable, but it’s just a complex version of the same old treadmill, albeit now you can get on the cooking treadmill when you get bored with fighting.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Star Wars Galaxies is awash in potential; however, that doesn’t change the fact that as of right now, it’s a half-finished game. I love the way it looks, I think it has a great skill structure that breeds individual style, it sounds awesome and it’s Star Wars. I get nerd-fueled goose bumps when I go to Mos Eisley and hang out in the cantina. Yet the experience, for all its addictive qualities, still feels lacking due to its slow pace and the absence of vehicles and space travel. If you crave socialized role-playing in a Star Wars environment and want to be in on the ground level of what’s sure to be a vast title, go out and buy Galaxies. If you crave saber duels and X-Wing dogfights, then you may want to hold off until at least the first expansion. For myself, my Rodian Marksman Bokka has a date to fulfill with Boba Fett. See you on Tatooine.

As I started playing one of the things in the back of my head would be what I would rate this game. At the beginning someone asked me that, and I responded, probably about an 8. You will see my score does not reflect that now. SOE developed a piss-poor build of a game that isn't completed yet and feels a whole lot like a cheap bait-and-switch. As of right now, it's not entertaining, and it's only online part of the time, so this seems to just be a product of Sony.

What stinks more than anything is SOE’s treatment of the game’s devoted fans, who find themselves spumed by the developer’s hope that a dumbed-down gaming experience will appeal to a wider audience. Prior to this update. SWG was a novel, if somewhat impenetrable, MMO in several ways, most notably its style of virtual freedom. But no more, as SOE has now chosen to make the game just like every other generic leveling treadmill.
