Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Jedi Knight is clearly a 5-Star game. The story is interesting, the Force Powers and weapons available are incredibly cool to use, and the opportunity to cut an opponent to shreds with a Lightsaber is the secret dream of any Jedi aspiring to heed the call of the Dark Side. Jedi Knight has a multitude of options that are configurable to the desires of the player, and a significant amount of support material is included with the product, in the event the player encounters any difficulty. There is only one suggestion that I can make at this point: If you have any interest at all in the Star Wars universe, you are going to want a copy of this two-CD product. As yet another famous Jedi might say, "It is pointless to resist, my son."

The game maps rivaled the size of the ones in Tomb Raider, with numerous ingenious secret areas (including one truly inspired Hidden Max). LucasArts also offered two alternate paths of "The Force"; you could choose to be as evil as Darth Vader, or to be the next Luke Skywalker. One example: much like the following year's Unreal, the game was not a "kill everything" no-brainer, and there were civilians that a true Jedi would have to protect and unharm (if you just blindly killed them, you would soon be seduced by The Dark Side!). There were even alternate video cutscenes, depending on the path chosen. Challenging light saber duels, John Williams background music, and sound effects from the movie trilogy itself, added to the major fun. Topping it all off was a Mission Disc in the following year, Mysteries of the Sith, that was almost like getting a whole new game! This game was a flawless classic to fans of Star Wars games.

The follow-up to the successful Dark Forces, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II maintains everything that was good about the first game while improving the areas that were a bit weak. Still playing as Kyle Katarn, you take up the powers of the Jedi in a quest for personal vengeance. The levels are intricate and beautiful, the voice acting is superb, and the cut-scenes are exquisite. An instant classic, Jedi Knight realizes the true potential of the first-person action genre.

Jedi Knight allows Star Wars fans to experience the amazing -- and deeply mystical -- powers of the Force for the first time. Use of the Force is based on an experience points system that allows players to customize the game. As each mission unfolds, players earn experience points that are tallied when a mission is complete. The Force abilities -- either Dark side or Light -- are then awarded accordingly. Basic powers include enhanced jumping, the ability to see through walls, healing powers and the ability to retrieve weapons and objects from far away.

It's amazing that an action game could be so detailed and feature-laden that it's impossible to do it justice in a two-page review, but Jedi Knight is just that -- the richest, most surprising, and certainly the most absorbing game I've played all year. LucasArts has pushed the boundaries of 3D gaming way back with this one, and set new standards in atmosphere, level design, and originality that all the upcoming 3D action games will be hard-pressed to meet. In the meantime, this is an instant classic.

With a gradual accumulation of Force power, achingly huge levels, some incredible theme levels and spot effects, deathmatch, a spankingly true 3D engine, and wall-to-wall Star Wars-iness, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is everything we want. No, it's not Quake. It's Dark Forces, in a brilliant little genre of its own.

Jedi Knight combines all the good aspects that a game should have: good graphics, interesting story, innovative game-play and superb multiplayer support. Anyone who has a good system (fast w/ a 3D accelerator) will definitely be pleased with Jedi Knight.

All in all, JEDI KNIGHT is an extremely good single-player action game. It has a decent storyline that is well tied to gameplay, well-done levels, and some of that old Star Wars magic. LucasArts took everything that was good about DARK FORCES, and made it better, much like MicroProse did with CIVILIZATION II or Blizzard did with WARCRAFT II. There are some flaws here and there, but the good gameplay elements easily outweigh the flaws. While TIE FIGHTERS is still the greatest Star Wars game ever, JEDI KNIGHT comes awfully close.

Pelit
Jedi Knight on upea peli upeasta aiheesta.

However, if Jedi Knight doesn't feel as refreshing as MDK or innovative as Quake, it's not the game's fault. The twin combination of 3D-game hype with Star Wars has caused our expectations of this "Quake-killer" to be sky-high, as if we're expecting Harrison Ford to hop out of our monitor, grab us by the shoulder and take us for a ride in the Millennium Falcon. That isn't going to happen, so just play Jedi Knight and go along for the ride. Ignore the story and immerse yourself in the incredible environments - you may never want to come back

Christ Centered Game Reviews
Overall, Jedi Knight is a solid title, though slightly lacking in the area of its graphics engine - which is definitely showing its age, the amount of multiplayer levels included in the game, and the non-innovative multiplayer modes, it shines as one of the best first person shooter of 1997 and beyond. This game will be a classic in its own right. I suggest you go and get your copy at Amazon.com for only $9.99 USD or find a used copy on Ebay.com for even less. You will not be disappointed unless you're a graphics freak. Oh, I almost forgot, offensive content. This game has no blood, language, or sexual material included. It does have shooting of other characters though from a first person point of view, but none of the deaths are violent or explicit. It is rated T for Teen.

After playing the first few minutes of this game I knew that Dark Forces was never going to be played again, yes Dark Forces was good, it had added many new things the game style, but many people didnt think it was really that good and were content with Doom as they had been for ages.

Designing a game set in the Star Wars universe seems like a no-brainer. The look and sounds of the game - from the Imperial gray of walls, to the elephantine squeal of a TIE Fighter engine, to the squeaky "pew, pew" of a blaster shot - are already set in stone, so designers just need to think of a genre and use the existing elements to build a game. This formula has been both successful (as with X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and Dark Forces) and not so successful (see Yoda Stories or Shadows of the Empire). Jedi Knight falls squarely into the former category, and is LucasArts' first truly great Star Wars game since TIE Fighter. The designers have done a commendable job of creating an immersive environment and have come up with what is arguably the best single-player first-person shooter since Doom.

Power Play

What Jedi Knight lacks in spark, it compensates for with the oodles of money that a giant like LucasArts can throw into the development process. Add to that good environments, great music, tons of options, solid gameplay, and smooooooth net connections and I can certainly say that fans of the genre won't be disappointed.

Star Wars fans won't be disappointed because despite its flaws, Jedi wannabes will still love the force powers and the one-on-one lightsaber duels scattered throughout the game. Keep in mind that this is still the only decent Star Wars-based first-person shooter out there. Even though Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II has adequate multiplayer features (that feel more like an afterthought), the game's one-player mode is still where the goods are at.

If you can take one thing away from this review, it’s that I really liked Dark Forces. Nearly all the parts I enjoyed about that game carry over to the sequel, with an upgraded 3D engine to boot. The things that were not present – live action cutscenes, lightsabers, Force powers – don’t feel executed well, and later games certainly do a much better job of letting you play as a Jedi. At least you can stow that lightsaber, and rip through the levels with a blaster in your hand, just like my version of Kyle does. He also shaved, and he skips the cutscenes.

That isn't to say Dark Forces isn't a good game because it is but that's all it is, a good game. It's Star Warsy enough to add that extra special spark and your getting a great deal for your money. There's even a bit of originality in there with the Jedi Force abilities. But if Half-Life and all the rest have spoilt you, you may be somewhat disappointed.

Mind you, if you’re running an old system, or planning a LAN party and looking for a low-end title that you can install legitimately on many computers for limited moolah, and want something a little bit old-school, but not 16-bit old-school, this is just the ticket. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m talking to very many of you.
