Auf den Aufruf „Join now!“ wird wohl nicht jeder hören, denn das interessante Spielkonzept wurde teilweise nicht konsequent genug umgesetzt. Schwächen im Sound und die teils etwas einseitigen Missionsziele (vernichten, retten, beschützen) machen das Spiel nicht zum Überflieger. Einzelne Elemente werten den Unterhaltungsfaktor aber dennoch auf. Interessant für Fans dürfte die Special Edition sein, welche zusätzliches Material zum Spiel liefert wie das Making Of, Wallpaper und ein kleines Buch mit Artworks und Entwicklerzeichnungen inklusive Kommentare der Designer. Starship Troopers ist für Fans durchaus empfehlenswert, insgesamt ist es Geschmackssache.

Starship Troopers von Strangelite und Frogster ist ein durchweg guter Shooter der mit ein paar Problemen bei der Grafik und der Performance zu kämpfen hat, sowie mit einer recht dünnen Geschichte. Ebenfalls ein wenig schade sind der sehr klein ausgefallene Multiplayer-Bereich, sowie die Synchronisation, die beide keinen Blumentopf gewinnen können. So ist das Spiel insgesamt ein guter bis durchschnittlicher Shooter, der nicht mit den Releases der letzten Monate mithalten kann, aber trotzdem für Fans seinen Reiz hat.

Okay, das Starship-Troopers-Taktikspiel von 2001 war zwar cool, trotzdem wollte ich schon immer lieber selbst mitten im Bug-Gewusel stehen und aus allen Rohren feuern. Und genau das kann ich jetzt endlich tun. Monotoner Spielablauf hin, schwächliche Grafik her, Starship Troopers macht mir durch die Atmospähre und rasante Missionen eine Menge Spaß. Da verschmerze ich auch die kurze Spielzeit, immerhin darf ich im (wenn auch knappen) Koop-Modus gemeinsam mit meinen Kumpels der Föderation dienen.

Starship Troopers erinnert mich an polnische Freudenmädchen: nicht besonders schön oder intelligent, aber man kann trotzdem viel Spaß mit ihnen haben. Als Anhänger der Filmvorlage bin ich mit dem Endprodukt zufrieden. Ähnlich viele Gegner bietet höchstens noch die Serious Sam-Reihe. Zudem sagt mir zu, dass ich die vielen unterschiedlichen Bugs nicht nur mit einer übermächtigen Superknarre, sondern mit dem gesamten Waffenarsenal zum Platzen bringe. Ja, auch ich leiste meinen Beitrag!

"Hallo! 4, 3, 2, 1, scharf!", erklärt uns unsere Handgranate mit fiepsiger Stimme. Der Sprengkörper enthält ein Display, auf dem ein kleines Smiley-Gesicht angezeigt ist. Wir schleudern das Ding in eine Horde Bugs und sehen zu, wie es die Killer-Insekten in ihre Einzelteile zerlegt. Wenn das nicht abgefahren ist! Doch der kleine Freund und Helfer ist so ziemlich das einzig Außergewöhnliche an Starship Troopers.

In 1997, TriStar and Touchstone Pictures released director Paul Verhoeven's interpretation of the popular, yet controversial, science-fiction novel by Robert Heinlein, Starship Troopers. For those unfamiliar with the storyline, Starship Troopers is set 300 years in the future, where Earth is governed by the Terran Federation, a form of representative democracy that places heavy emphasis on citizenship. One way to become a full citizen, someone who has the right to vote and hold public office, is to enlist in the Federal Service. The hero of the book and movie, Rico, joins the Mobile Infantry to earn his full citizenship just as the Arachnids, a race of giant bugs hell-bent on destroying humans, attack Earth. The movie, with its cutting-edge special effects, memorable one-liners and unlimited supply of bugs, blood and ammunition, was a hit at the box office.

Der Shooter Starship Troopers basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Spielfilm von Regisseur Paul Verhoeven aus dem Jahre 1997. Schon damals war die Existenz der Menschheit durch Millionen von Bugs bedroht und konnte nur durch den Einsatz des Helden Johnny Rico und seiner Einheit “Marauders“ auf Seiten der Mobilen Infanterie gerettet werden. Jetzt liegt es voll und ganz in der Hand des Spielers. Dabei setzen die Entwickler vor allem auf Massenschlachten, bei denen ihr beispielsweise eine Festung gegen hunderte Gegner verteidigen müsst.

Just living up to expectations isn’t enough to make a game great. The average graphics and sound weigh down Starship Troopers. The ability to fight swarms of enemies is entertaining at first, but it can be a problem at times. Losing because the enemies attacked faster than you can kill them or because you looked the wrong direction for a second and a half can be frustrating. Fans of the movie will enjoy this game. Other gamers should take a moment to consider this before purchasing Starship Troopers.

When the game uses its source material well (the opening, the excellent smiley grenades that sweetly count down the seconds left until their destruction, a few of the bigger boss creatures), then this is a passable game, and one that people who were stupid enough to buy the film's rubbish DVD spin-off sequels might be interested to play. There are redeeming features, a few nice touches of scripting here and a cool boss there, but generally the fabled shitty-stick of non-touching is going to have to make another one of his increasingly common appearances. If you buy this game, then I'm sorry to say you'll be disappointed. Do you want to know more?

Starship Troopers, c'est tout d'abord un film de Paul Verhoeven, dans lequel le caractère militariste et le patriotisme à l'américaine sont passés à la moulinette. Un film à prendre au second degré et pas comme une apologie de la guerre. Le jeu jouit-il des mêmes atouts ?

Een lelijk, allesbehalve vernieuwende saaie shooter die niets van de sterke elementen van de film begrepen lijkt te hebben en gebukt gaat onder talloze schoonheids- en structurele foutjes. Er zijn betere games in het genre, wat zeg ik, haast elk game uit het genre is beter. Een standaardvoorbeeld van hoe het niet moet of hoe een haastklus toch nog in de winkelrekken kan belanden.

This game is a strange beast. Coming out eight years after the release of its namesake movie -- when Blur's "Song #2" was burning up the charts and Google was still in blueprint mode -- Starship Troopers attempts to continue the story five years after the end of the film, with hairy firefights, cheeky humor, and constant onslaughts of bugs. I say "attempts" because the fun moments are few and far between. The majority of the game is a matter of wrangling with a partly realized and highly ambitious project that feels both rushed out the door and packed to the gills with pedestrian content. I wanted to like Starship Troopers, but the more I played, the more irritated I became.

Starship Troopers? Zeg maar Starship Bloopers! Zelfs programmeerbugs zijn leuker dan de alien bugs in dit spel! Een gemiste kans.

Man nehme eine geniale Filmlizenz, würze sie mit frischen Ideen, einfallsreichen Gegnern und einem interessanten Leveldesign. Heraus kommt garantiert nicht Starship Troopers.

Okay listen up, marauders! This ain't no cakewalk! I don't care what you thought you signed up for, but as far as I'm concerned, you're a bunch of pansies! The bugs will eat you up alive unless you listen to me, and listen good! And no, I will not stop shouting at you so stop asking!

It is an exercise in immense frustration and painful tedium. When it works, and this feels a stupid sentence at this point, it does manifest the correct semiotic indicators of first-person shooting. You are mowing down literally hundreds of baddies with big metal guns. But that's it. And it isn't all that much. Oh, and did I mention that the jump is useless?

A fun movie is turned into a dreary game dragged down with stale ideas and never-ending repetition.

Starship Troopers has little dedication to faithfully re-creating the things that made the film unique, and it's a pretty lousy and technically deficient shooter to boot.

Starship Troopers est un pur concentré de bonheur, à condition évidemment d'aimer 3 types de situations. Premièrement : tirer sans discontinuer sur un tas d'ennemis clonés ; deuxièmement : être plongé au milieu d'un tas d'ennemis clonés au point de ne plus distinguer que 249 paires de pattes et un tir de plasma en provenance d'une plus grosse paire de pattes ; troisièmement : l'une ou l'autre des deux précédent propositions mais en restant collé dans un morceau de décor. Alors franchement, si ça vous botte pas, moi je comprends pas.

So tough are these bugs, and so multitudinous, they appear to have infiltrated the developers computers as well as the entire game. Prepare yourself for random crashes, bugs and soldiers getting stuck and performing bizarre actions repetitively, endless restarts and movies that you can’t see, and even if you could, it would crash your computer anyway. Starship Troopers does provide some multiplayer capacity, but you’re highly unlikely to find anyone else willing to expose themselves to that kind of torture. Pass the bug spray please.
