I would gladly recommend The Suffering: Ties That Bind to horror fans. If you like lots of guns that feel the business, lots of demons who look the business, lots of tension, lots of suspense, a great plot that keeps you guessing and interested, and buckets and buckets of blood, then you'll probably love this. Be sure to play it in the dark with the volume turned nice and high, and if you have surround sound make use of it. Mums and dads beware though: this is an 18 for a very, very good reason. Don't buy it for little Johnny or Jane for Christmas, unless you don't want them to sleep ever again…

Doch bietet The Suffering: Ties that bind Horror-Atmosphäre pur.

Ties That Bind bietet mehr von allem, was The Suffering beliebt machte - zugegebenermaßen aber ohne weltbewegende Neuerungen.

The Suffering: Ties that Bind hat mich echt gepackt.

Unfortunately, while Ties That Bind should stand proudly beside its older brother, it doesn't do a whole lot to expand on the theme of the original -- nightmare prison visions come alive, ghosts that kill, and churning violence. There are more neutral people in the environment, but one of the original's strengths was how we were so isolated within a seemingly inescapable mote of horror. That was an excellent tension. There was also something quite Gothic about it that doesn't carry over into Ties That Bind. With the survival horror subgenre so heavily populated, you'll want to add any flavor you can to make yourself not look like the stalwarts. Ties That Bind, being more urban, loses some distinction. Still, if you liked the original, you should like Ties That Bind.

It's a weird time for horror games right now. After the first Suffering came out last year, many people were surprised to see that an action-horror game could work. No longer did players have to creep around in the dark, or feel helpless since they couldn't move while shooting. Then perhaps the biggest name in horror -- Resident Evil -- came along earlier this year with one of the most critically acclaimed games in recent memory, but one almost entirely lacking any scary moments in favor of an action-oriented affair. Perhaps the best thing we can say about The Suffering: Ties That Bind is it's one of the few games that succeeds at being both strong on action and on horror, but unfortunately the game isn't quite as polished as we were hoping it would be.

If you're a fan of the original game, depending largely upon whether you liked the weapon system or not, you'll either love or strongly disapprove of the direction that Midway has taken the franchise. I happen to be the latter, but I reserve everyone's right to an opinion. The game lulls along, with action here and there, but the fear of the unknown creeping behind every corner in the first game is very much gone in Ties that Bind, which happens to be my greatest disappointment. All told, Ties that Bind is worth a rent, but if you find yourself wishing you'd spent your money on something else, don't say I didn't warn you.

The Suffering: Ties That Bind has its moments, but most of these moments are the same sorts of moments that you saw in last year's game. If you're a fan of the previous game and you're looking for more of the same, Ties That Bind fits the bill, but more expansion on the themes of the first game would have made for a much more interesting final product.

The Suffering: Ties that Bind biedt vooral meer van hetzelfde en heeft ons dan ook maar zelden kunnen verrassen. Jammer.

It's a shame that The Suffering: Ties That Bind suffers from these serious problems. The gameplay and locales aren't particularly exciting, yet the pacing is taut, and the story and acting are above par for a game. Fans of the first game should enjoy learning more about Torque's clouded life, but if you're new to the series, you'll probably better off picking up the original.

The PC plays host to a great many horror games, and if you're over the age of about 8, it's pretty tough to really scare yourself anyway-which means that games like The Suffering: Ties That Bind are probably at something of a disadvantage to begin with. TTB did give me a shiver or two when played under circumstances designed to induce that effect (late at night, alone in my apartment with the lights dimmed, and the surround sound cranked)...but unless you found the original Suffering especially captivating, you can probably find better ways to get your creep on.
