Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Despite its complexity and sophistication, SuperPower fails to achieve any of its extraordinarily ambitious objectives. A key problem may simply be that the international system is too hard to replicate under its current condition of relative anarchy. It is as if a bunch of computer experts who were amateurs in world politics attempted to set up, starting from scratch, a dynamic model of the way the world operates; a next-to-impossible task. Aside from Balance of Power, both Shadow President (written primarily by a Ph.D. in international relations) and its oddly titled sequel CyberJudas do a better job replicating the subtleties of real global intrigue. While the bugs are certainly problematic, what sinks this game ultimately are flaws in its underlying design. If you buy it, you sadly will get but a taste — and a somewhat distorted one at that — at the incredible excitement that surrounds real-world geopolitical diplomacy.

It’s unfortunate that the developers opted for a such a complete “do it yourself” mode of gameplay, because it probably wouldn’t have been that difficult to incorporate a greater degree of interactivity with the Advisor, even if nothing else. It’s one thing for the EHE to process thousands of bits of information per turn; quite another to ask the player to do so. Though buried in statistics and bugs, there’s a decent game lurking in SuperPower for fans of politics, international relations, and military strategy. However, that’s a pretty limited market, and this game won’t be pulling in any newcomers. So if you know a Poly-Sci major, grab this game and surprise them with it. If not, take a pass and don’t give it a second thought.

Its wealth of detail and apparent complexity can’t hide SuperPower’s fundamental dullness.
