Worth Playing
Combine new weapons, ship types, the wonderfully realized debut of the Zuul race, deeper gameplay, more scenarios and new ways to play, and you've got a solid, if unforgiving, title for hardcore turn-based fans to set their sights on. Kerberos definitely put enough into this to make it more than just a mission pack but not quite a full sequel. Sword of the Stars: Born of Blood expands and improves on an already good title; just remember that it can be aggravatingly difficult at times. Keeping the focus on expansion and conquest rather than the resource gathering, micromanagement and other fluff typical of the genre is fine with me. This is one I'll still be playing months from now.
Gameplay (Benelux)
Sword of the Stars: Born of Blood is an expansion pack to last year's stylish turn-based space strategy game, Sword of the Stars. Like most expansions, it adds a fair amount of new content to its predecessor. There's a new, playable alien race (boosting the total to five); a slew of cool new gameplay features; and loads of improvements. However, it's also like a graduate-level course in the original game because Born of Blood feels like it was made for diehard Sword of the Stars fans ready for a new level of difficulty.
GameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands)
Born of Blood doesn't really do much to shake up the core game. Born of Blood is still nearly as combat-focused as Sword of the Stars, and that can be a great thing depending on what you're looking for. Still, the diplomacy and economy additions are definite sidelines to the combat. And the combat here is much more intense than before. The AI puts the new weapons to good use and the new random event (read: catastrophe) system adds to the pressure. For both of those reasons, Born of Blood really isn't going to attract new players to the game but it certainly serves to extend the experience for those who enjoyed the original. Unless you're a die-hard Sword of the Stars fan, you can take a pass on this one.
