Tactical Ops comes close to Counter Strike, but it certainly does not surpass it. But, the 20 dollar price tag will allow people who don't own Half Life to get in on the internet action. If you already play and love Counter Strike, don't bother with this game. However, if you don't feel like buying Half Life and downloading an 80 meg file, check out Tactical Ops.

Yet another FPS shooter game has hit the shelves at your local store, is it worth your time? That will depend on what you want from an FPS game. Lets dive into this one and see if it measures up.
Absolute Games (AG.ru) (May 19, 2002)
Unreal Tournament…

W przeciwieństwie do pierwowzoru, AoT (Assault on Terror) ma o wiele lepszą grafikę (opartą o zaawansowany silnik graficzny firmy Epic).

Overall I would say that Tactical Operations is a good mod for Unreal Tournament, but to pay for it is a bit much of the goodness if you ask me.
GameSpy (May 19, 2002)
You have over 30 maps, great, but what if your mission types lacked in variety? Rescue the hostages and bomb defuses get old quickly, leaving you with a "been there, done that" sense of ennui after a few days of playing. Tactical Ops is not a bad mod. It's quite polished in many respects. It uses the same Windows-like menu system that Unreal Tournament fans have grown to love. It rocks when played well. It looks good. It's fun for the most part. In a world without Counter-Strike, it would be "da bomb." For all the good things it has and does, it simply doesn't capture the feeling of teamwork and excitement of a job well done that CS does. By all rights, it should as it has the right credentials and equipment… perhaps it's something intangible that's missing.
PC Zone Benelux (Oct, 2002)

I’ll be the first to admit it. I despise the idea of games that are meant for online play only. Sure there’s a practice mode in Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 Arena, Global Ops, and this game too, but I’ll even admit that it doesn’t match the level of intensity of playing online. That’s not why though I hate the idea of online only games, but that’s a rant for a different article. This is relevant though, because my general distaste for online game play I've never played Counter-strike; Tactical Ops’ most obvious point of reference for those drawing comparisons. As I’ve never played Counter-strike, you can be sure that I won’t be comparing the two. How this game stacks up against the competition I have played, I will comment on, and let me tell you now, the forecast looks grim for Tactical Ops.
PC Gamer (Jun 01, 2002)
Already one of the most popular mods for Unreal Tournament, Tactical Ops has now been released as a stand-alone retail product (meaning you don’t need UT to play it). Though we loved TacOps as a mod and applaud the fact that the folks at Kamehan will benefit financially from their creation, TacOps’ problems prevent us from whole-heartedly recommending it, especially when you can still download the mod version (which will always be compatible with the retail version) for free.
GameSpot (Apr 26, 2002)
Looked at as a free mod, Tactical Ops is an achievement its developers can be proud of, but taken as a retail game, it still needs more work.
IGN (May 07, 2002)
Once there was a day when all we knew was frantic running and hectic rocket throwing. That day has long since passed. "Cliché," the gamers of the world now call the classic twitch shooter. "Why isn't it more realistic?" They query. "Who cares about singleplayer? I only play multi." Wailing madly and polluting the Internet with their ignorant and tainting fanboy infected form of language, this comparatively small but vocal contingent of PC gamers is the core reason for recycled product, the very thing that creates thousands of RTSs, hundreds of Diablo clones, dozens of MMOs, and wave after wave of the realistic team-based tactical online first-person shooter. Behold this, Tactical Operations: Assault on Terror.
Gameguru Mania (May 13, 2002)
Tac Ops: Assault on Terror is a retail version of the Tac Ops anti-terrorism modification for Unreal Tournament. I agree it's quite unusual when an entire mod team graduates from a free version to making a full retail version of their mod, but it's not impossible - look at Counter-Strike and Gunman Chronicles. Yeah it's still only a business nothing else. Of course, this standalone (does not require the purchase or installation of Unreal Tournament) retail version is compatible with free mod version (200MB) which is available for those who already own Unreal Tournament. However the retail version includes some new and unique content (some extra maps). Similarly to Counter Strike, in Tac Ops: Assault on Terror you can assume the role of elite Special Forces or the Terrorists. Each round has a time limit of about 4 minutes, but can be finished earlier if the objectives are completed.
It’s not that Tac Ops is a bad game, it’s just that it’s an unnecessary one. Why would you play this game when you can play Counter-Strike or some other, more original UT mod? The whole counter-terrorist-themed. close-quarters combat genre is oversaturated. Do we really need another chance to dress up as SWAT members and run around a warehouse with MP5s, defusing bombs and rescuing hostages? When there’s one game out there that gets it so right, nobody really needs another.
The Age (Jun 20, 2002)
After a long time in beta development, the Unreal Tournament mod Tactical Ops has hit the retail shelves with Assault on Terror. It uses the UT graphics engine - indeed, it looks, feels, sounds and performs like UT - to create a game that is like CounterStrike but far enough removed to make it interesting. Game play is very, very fast, which forces everyone to be very aggressive. Maps are varied, ranging from claustrophobic to complex. The maps are a little buggy - disappearing scenery textures and weapons poking through walls and doors were disappointing. A second retail batch (one has already been released) may fix this. "Spectator" mode suffers from bad frame shuddering.
Svenska PC Gamer (Aug, 2002)
ActionTrip (May 11, 2002)
Ah, the eternal conflict between terrorist and anti-terrorist. Will we ever see the end of that? Hell no! It's always fun to get together with your mates and spray each other in a shower of bullets coming from your beloved AK-47 or M4… We find ourselves in times when multiplayer FPS titles a la Counter-Strike are simply appearing out of nowhere. As we're swept away by the tide of these games, we realize that none of them managed to surpass that special gameplay feeling which makes CS so poplar. Does Tactical Ops do that? Of course, it doesn't. But, it does have some advantages mind you; which may offer you a few pleasant hours of multiplayer fun.
UOL Jogos (Jul 24, 2002)
Not the worst game I've played, but the entire endeavor has that "let's-rush-this-to-the-store-before-President-Bush -wins-this-war-on-terrorism-thing-and-we-lose-a-great -chance-to-make-some-bucks" smell.
