Tellurian Defense

Als je in het bezit bent van een Pentium 233 of hoger, dan is Tellurian Defense een absolute aanrader. Schitterende graphics, goede actie en een soepele gameplay. Door de hoge systeemeisen ben ik echter bang dat veel mensen moeten afhaken. En dat is in dit geval zonde.

To start with, the gameplay and graphics are tedious, your ship looks like origami crushed by a child, while the control system feels like it's been designed by one. There are 30 missions, ranging from pure combat to undercover reconnaissance, but it's incredibly difficult to control your craft - you always seem to be going either too fast or too slow, spinning frantically in the hope of catching sight of an enemy ship. Tellurian Defence tries to cater for both flight sim fans and straightforward arcaders and falls somewhere in the middle, leaving a terrible mess on your carpet.

Nach einem hoffnungsvoll stimmenden Auftakt stellt sich bei Tellurian Defence schnell Enttäuschung ein. Das grundlegende Problem ist klar: Story und Spielprinzip sind so unoriginell, daß das Spiel lediglich durch gelungene Grafik und Effekte beeindrucken könnte. Die kargen Landschaften faszinieren aber nur in den ersten Minuten; schnell stellt sich der Verdacht ein, daß vor allem der ständig vorherrschende Nebel eher die Funktion hat, über Fehler im Bildaufbau hinwegzutäuschen. So bleibt letztlich nur ein Achselzucken über ein eher durchschnittliches Spiels.

This Hellbender-style aerial-combat game boasts nice, sim-like options such as wingmen, user-definable loadout and inventory configuration options. It has a solid storyline. The cinematic sequences and mission voice-overs reflect substantial effort. And the sad fact is that it would have been a good game, but for two fatal flaws. The first is that, for a game that's been in development for at least three years, it's oddly hardware-intensive. The killing blow is the controls. They're too sensitive.

In the end, Tellurian Defense falls short of the mark in nearly every way. Furthermore, with its current flight model and pace of action, I'm not sure who this game would've appealed to. The schizophrenic gameplay and repetitive combat is likely to turn off both simulation and arcade shooter fans. While this title features some innovative new ideas and thoughtful mission design, these aspects are not enough to make up for everything else that's missing. Unless you're absolutely desperate to save Earth from yet another dull alien invasion, I'd take a pass on Tellurian Defense.

Der Flug bei Tellurian Defense ist wie die Reise durch einen dampfenden Suppentopf. Mit eingeschaltetem Nebel sieht man den eigenen Bug vor Augen nicht (die Bugs glücklicherweise auch nicht). Sobald ich den trüben Dampf ausschalte, poppen die Grafikelemente dermaßen jäh vor mir auf, daß ich vor Schreck dast aus dem Pilotensitz falle.

Durch Tellurian Defence gewinnt das Wörtchen Steuerberater für mich ganz neue Anziehungskraft. Ein derart verunglücktes Flugverhalten ist mir nämlich schon lange nicht mehr unter den Joystick gekommen. Statt elegant durch die Luft zu flitzen, torkle ich wie ein Papagei in der Wäschetrommel den tumben Aliens entgegen. Wirklich schade, denn die überdurchschnittlich spannende Story und ordentliche Grafik hätten Besseres verdient.
