Overall we have a fun game on our hands here. This will only get better when I tell you its $10! I know again with the $10 games, but let's be honest here, would you prefer a $10 game that's worth more or would you prefer to buy a $50 game that's worth less? Terraria mines 5 GiN Gems out of 5 for being a perfect example of a good Time Waster.

Terraria is simply put, way too much fun for anyone’s good. I had to puff up this review by just telling you about how to play the game because I can’t find anything to complain about. The game is as much Minecraft as it is Super Metroid, or Legend of Zelda 2, where the emphasis on fighting and adventuring, but adding in a twist to the same basic fundamentals of crafting that made Minecraft such a success. Plus it probably doesn’t hurt that the game is fairly easy to play, runs on any hardware out there, and is suited for gamers of all ages and generations. Add in the fact that there is a fully supported multiplayer right out of the gate that has options for both cooperative play and for PvP and you have a 2D indie title with some serious staying power. Do yourself a favor, and buy a four pack of this game, your friends will thank you.

Terraria is a great adventure, one of the best sandbox games around, and an absolute steal for ten bucks on Steam. It's well worth checking out for anyone, regardless of how they feel about Minecraft. Despite having one fewer dimension, Terraria hides greater depth than its 3D cousin.

Terraria is a 16-bit playground that it’s all too easy to get lost in
Indie Game Magazine (Feb 15, 2012)
Terraria is the new definition of value for money. There are three world sizes and a seemingly infinite number of combinations and world possibilities. Players have so much choice over the way that they play each time. It is possible to create up to five different characters, so players can take it upon themselves to play each in a different style. When it comes down to it though, Terraria epitomizes this gaming generation – no other game draws teamwork, exploration and epic battles into such an enthralling package.
The Escapist (Jul 07, 2011)
If you're a fan of adventure platforms like Metroid and Castlevania, but you always felt they could be a little more sandbox, Terraria is a must have. Don't judge the book by its cover. Let Terraria surprise you.
Hooked Gamers (Jun 09, 2011)
All in all, with its simple but effective interface, nostalgic sounds and vast open world, Terraria is a game of almost unlimited scope and enjoyment, provided you are willing to put the hours in to get proficient at the tasks the game requires you to perform. If you have the commitment, the game will appeal to anyone who has ever played the old-school Legend of Zelda games along with those who just enjoy exploration and combat and, of course, fans of Minecraft. However, even if you don't really categorize yourself as a wearer of one of those labels, you should give Terraria a try anyway. It might just make you a fan. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got caves to explore.
GameZone (May 28, 2011)
Terraria can be enjoyed in several ways. You can treat the game like a classic action-adventure game and explore its depths, rigorously searching for materials and hunting enemies. You can take your time and see the sights at your leisure. You can even play architect and build houses, mansions, and lairs galore. Terraria is your sandbox, and you can play in it however you like. Re-Logic has given gamers the opportunity to either enjoy Terraria as a side-scrolling action-adventure title or like a toy that they can play with for hours on end. Either way you look at it, Terraria is a sandbox that you won’t be able to get away from regardless of whether or not you’ve already invested entire days.
IGN (May 25, 2011)
Though on the surface it looks like just another "me too" indie game seeking to ride the coattails of Minecraft's success, Terraria expands on the familiar sandbox gameplay with a greater emphasis on combat and adventure that proves very satisfying. Fresh elements – like an absurdly expansive weapon crafting system, a broader scope of monsters to battle, and a slick retro 2D presentation – make it a stand out among the pack. Hell, it took all the resolve I could muster just to shut the game down long enough to write this review. That's rare indeed.

Terraria cresce a ogni patch acquistando sempre nuove sfaccettature.
GameTrailers (Jun 29, 2011)
In the end, Terraria presents an experience similar to Minecraft, but it manages to distinguish itself with a heavy dose of breakneck fun that Minecraft often lacks. There's something for everyone here, and a host of free updates, a polished retro presentation, and a reasonable $10 price tag make this sandbox more than worth digging into.

Inaccessibility is the one flaw that haunts this great game. The early hours are punishing because you have no idea what you're supposed to do, and the lack of direction makes Terraria initially off-putting. But after sinking dozens of hours into this impressive game, you'll wonder how you could ever have been frustrated. There are so many surprises to uncover and rewards to unlock that once you get the basics down, you'll be hard pressed to tear yourself away. Whether you're trying to break shadow orbs in the corrupted land or constructing a labyrinth passageway to combine water with lava, there's always something demanding your attention. Terraria is a unique and engrossing experience that is extremely difficult to tear yourself away from once you become invested in its enticing world.

Good Game (Jun 07, 2011)
Yeah, You'll have the most fun just trapping friends and doing things like dropping lava on them.. then stealing their dropped coin. Creative world PVP is the best. It would be nice if there was a server browser or matchmaking to join in with others, but you'd probably just get your hard work trolled anyway i guess but that side of things is pretty underdeveloped. At least multiplayer worked when it worked.. with very few bugs. Hex, this is I think the second game ever to bring together this many members of the gg team at once..
Mana Pool (Jul 20, 2011)
At the end of the day, most games are rubbish. Nothing lives up to your expectations, unless you are a mean-spirited and cynical person. Luckily most reviewers are, or at least become so rapidly. The world is just so full of awful shit. Now and again, you meet a cursebreaker who lifts the dark spell and renews your faith in all things gamey. Take Terraria. It didn’t meet any of my expectations. Terraria looked like it was going to be bizarre nonsense. But it totally fails to live up to that expectation. If an immersive lark of a game that won’t tax your wallet, your graphics card or your brain appeals, I’d stop reading and get exploring the cheerful depths of Terraria.

There's a reason Terraria has sold a few hundred thousand copies in the first few months it's been on sale. It's because, if Terraria really does have a bottom, no one can be bothered to go find it. They're having far too much fun on the surface, and the spaces in between.

Lack of tutorial, buggy netcode and wobbly combat aside, it’s hard not to love the sense of wonder and discovery.

Ten Ton Hammer (May 30, 2011)
Negativity aside, we’ve got a real winner on our hands with Terraria. There are plenty of unique weapons to keep you busy, which are crafted with plenty of unique ores found in the core of the earth or even the sky. With great risk comes great reward though, so I’ll see you in heaven or hell to mine those minerals on a server at some point!
The A.V. Club (Jun 06, 2011)
Minecraft still has Terraria beat when it comes to immersion. The two-dimensional perspective distances rather than drawing players in. Building isn’t as satisfying, and exploration feels more like slow-motion Metroid than pure adventuring. And in spite of helpful NPCs, Terraria still necessitates extracurricular wiki readings. Still, Terraria is a potent distraction tool. Buried treasures will always have that allure. The game gives you a pickaxe and points your nose downward. What else are you gonna do but dig?
Gamekult (May 30, 2011)
Games On Net (May 25, 2011)
If I were to make one suggestion to the Terraria developers - other than “please make all the pixels bigger”, or "actually save my location when I save and exit the game" - it would be to change the marketing strategy for this game to focus on what it does best, rather than talking up the frankly sub-par mining and exploring aspects of the title. Terraria works best if you consider it a co-op side-scrolling action-adventure game with the ability to carve new tunnels through the levels - but approach it hoping for a 2D retro-styled Minecraft and you’ll quickly go crying back to Mojang’s skirts.
