Duality
hribek (30), Mar 22, 2009
Pagans and Hammerites = sickle x hammer
Blackjack and sword = send to sleep x kill
Arrows and melee = long range x short range
Water arrow and fire arrow = douse x lit
Moss arrow and noise arrow = silence x loudness
Good "human" girl and bad god man
Garrett and guards = flee x pursue
Garrets eyes = eye x not eye anymore

"I could continue...", "Do", "Eee"... ;) [1]

I was wondering whether this can be seen much more in the other games too? I can only recall some indie games, one where You controlled center of swarm of bees(?) which You could scatter or attract, and Gish, blob which You could scatter (like water) and make hard (and made sticky).

User AvatarI think you can find duality/opposites in just about any game.

User AvatarYes, Mario and Browser for example. Now let's ponder on this new philosophical insight. Enlightenment is close, I can feel it. The secret of the universe is but a touch away. After all, isn't duality also manifested in the simple WASD + mouse control system. As you are controlling one part of the game with one hand, and the other with the other. So, the mouse is the right hand path and the WASD left hand path. As we all know, the right hand path is the traditional path of traditional religions. But the left hand path is the shadowy path, the path of primal forces, the path of the individual. So WASD is chaos, while the mouse is order. Interesting, isn't it?

So you are in fact destroying the world with one hand and creating it with the other. Or wait... Isn't destruction and creation both of chaotic origin? And order just the maintainment of the status quo? So with hand hand you dance the eternal dance of Shiva, while with the other you try to make this chaotic force mundane? But then again, don't all truths become mundane at one point and thus need a new destruction/creation. So after the new creation has been turned into enslaving status quo, it needs to be destroyed to liberate people from enslavement.

Because the purpose of truth is to liberate, but all truths when being turned into status quo become enslaving. And thus it is the eternal dance.

It's interesting, that with WASD, with left hand path, the path of the individual you usually control the character in games. Perhaps there is some truth to my ramblings after all.

User AvatarIt depends on with which hand you use the arrow keys in games. Is it arrow keys + mouse? Arrow keys+ctrl? In which case you would control the individual with the hand of status quo, but destruction would still be left for the left hand.

But this does remind me, that in WASD+mouse, you destroy with the mouse. Hmm....

The hand that controls the character will show whether you abide to status quo or whether you carve your own path. But the hand with which you destroy will show whether you destroy the individual or the status quo. Different kinds of destructions you know.

The destruction of the left hand path is passionate. The destruction of the right hand path is cold and sterile.

The dark forces of nature are also behind the creative force - life. But a cold and sterile environment kills completely.

I was too broad. I should have rather said duality of mechanics. Like attract / repulse. And also I should have said what was the most interesting dual mechanics (mostly weapons...) in game You've seen so far? Man, I should have stop to talk klingon next time ;).
