Overall, Thief the Dark Project does all the things I love. Which are excellent gameplay grouped with awesome SoundFX, and a fresh new idea to dive into. The Graphics took a back seat but who cares. This game is so innovative it rivals the likes of Half-Life. Thief gets top honors, and deserves it so.

Just Adventure
Looking Glass has quite a history of creating great games, but they really have outdone themselves here. It's hard to find any fault when you have a fantastic story, unique gameplay, and good graphics and sound to back it up. It's difficult to even categorize it in any known genre. There will be people who try to convince you it's too slow-moving and the graphics are only average, but so be it. While they're complaining, I'll be creeping through the shadows, finding new ways to sneak into some baron's castle and lift his prized possessions.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
I would never be so presumptuous as to say that Thief: The Dark Project is the best game ever made, but what I will tell you, without reservation, is that this has become my favorite game of all time. Maybe it's the subject matter, or the way the designers sculpted the single-player experience to allow for complete freedom and creativity, but I am absolutely in love with this game, and am currently playing through the whole thing again a second time. Thief: The Dark Project is a game from another time, when single-player was king and immersion was as important as multiplayer, and Looking Glass has proven once again that they are the masters of their field. If you're tired of wannabes, clones, and half-baked attempts at originality, play Thief: The Dark Project and get totally absorbed in the story, gameplay, and Garret himself.

Game Revolution
In the end, what we have here is the best use of the first-person engine that I have ever encountered. In a world full of Doom clones, it's good to see that some designers are still thinking for themselves. If you're tired of killing everyone you meet (though who could be tired of that), you should give Thief a try. But don't blame me if your girlfriend leaves you due to neglect.

If you ask role-playing fans which is the best character class to play, very few answer the “Thief” class. As a thief, you are neither a fighter nor a mage and can neither bash nor burn your foes. You play a thief because in a game the loot often lies behind locked doors or in locked chests which you can pick, but for god’s sake no one otherwise ever wants to play the thief. Why? Just because a thief is useless unless the quest items are heavily guarded.

Een geweldige game die uitblinkt in originaliteit. Kwa uiterlijk misschien net niet de top maar super sfeervol. Bovendien is het altijd leuk om te sluipen en in het geniep bezig te zijn. Speel het en steel het!

Mit dem Meisterdieb ist Eidos in der Tat ein Überraschungscoup gelungen. Die System-Shock-Väter haben eindrucksvoll bewiesen, daß sie ihr Handwerk nicht verlernt haben. Das Ergebnis wirkt fast wie ein Commandos aus einer 3D-Ich-Perspektive und erfordert ebensoviel Geduld und Überlegung. Einfach loszumarschieren und planlos die Gegner umzuhauen funktioniert nicht: Ein echter Profi vermeidet es sogar, Wächter ins Jenseits zu befördern und weiß, wann er einfach nur reglos in einer Ecke verharrt. Es gibt stets mehrere Möglichkeiten, ein Problem zu lösen - und noch mehr Möglichkeiten, zu scheitern.

You'll guide Thief's charismatic protagonist through a dozen missions, over the course of which a serious, surprising story will develop. Although there aren't many missions, most of them are huge, and more rewarding at higher difficulty levels because you'll have many more objectives to accomplish. There's further cause to want to try a mission more than once if only because the nature of the game is such that you can accomplish your task in many different ways, but in the end, you'll still wish the game was longer. You'll have a few complaints with Thief - the game isn't perfectly stable, and sometimes your foes won't act as intelligently as you'll expect them to. But between its novel premise, its artistic production, and its superb design and implementation, you'll find that those rare concerns fade from sight even faster than Garrett.

The biggest downside to some may be the lack of multiplayer options. Then again, a thief is known to walk alone which leaves little room for partnership in this setting. Still, the first rate storyline as well as visual and audio effects make Thief quite an immersive gaming experience. It is a subtle yet captivating game that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

It's quite amazing how much fun it can be to avoid action. When a single guard's notice can ruin your mission, you'll find yourself holding your breath when standing still in a dark corner, watching a Hammerite fanatic walk by within arm's reach. There is a true sense of paranoia felt throughout the game, and a fantastic sense of accomplishment and power when you pull off something particularly crafty. The unique method of adjusting the difficulty level provides real replayability as well-setting the game to "hard" or "expert" doesn't adjust health, damage, or creature AI, but rather adds more victory conditions to each mission.

In the end, Thief is one of the most exciting first-person games to come out in years. Rather than seeking to out do the competition in what's been done before, Looking Glass has given us a chance to play a different type of character in a world that is very realistic indeed. We're already waiting with baited breath to see what this dynamite development team can put together in the sequel.

Thief also has a very good training option for you to get started. Additionally, when you're in a mission and haven't done anything bad yet you are just greeted by the guards and also if you steal with stealth the guards will suspect nothing and still greet you. You must steal at the right time though: it must be dark and the guard must not see you at all. Thief: The Dark Project is really great and innovative with great graphics, sound and gameplay. I'm definitely hooked and I will be playing it for weeks, (which for me is a LONG time).

Unreal umwerfende Grafik
haben – für mich ist Dark Project die gelungenste
3D-Innovation seit langem.

Итак, в результате игроманы получают безусловно, интересный и необычный продукт, который понравится уставшим от типичных, банальных игр геймерам — а любителям безбашенных игр — уничтожителей клавиатур и мышей остается играть в SiN. Тем не менее, игра из-за некоторых особенностей вряд ли станет хитом — как, скажем, не стал им Trespasser, который тоже был оригинален по-своему. Но игра вносит новую струю в общее развитие индустрии, и идеи, вложенные в нее, в будущем забыты не будут.
